I have difficulty imagining Leliana crying.
Recently I was reading about Theodore Roosevelt, who had the misfortune of losing his first wife on Valentine's Day (also their anniversary) after giving birth to a daughter. His mother also died on the same day from typhus. Clearly the deaths deeply affected him, particularly that of his wife, as evidenced by the diary entry he made that day:
*snip*
But he refused to ever speak of it, even with his daughter, and forbid anyone to speak his wife's name in his presence. While later consoling a friend who had also lost his wife, Roosevelt reportedly told him to bury the pain as deep as possible inside him, or it would destroy him. We of course know that isn't true now, but it is how a lot of people (particularly men) thought back then.
I kind of think Leliana has a similar mindset. She barely mentions her mother, only gives the briefest mention of her father, and does not go into a lot of detail about the trauma she experienced while captured in Orlais. She gives the Warden just enough information to figure out what happened, but that's it. And in Leliana's Song she appears to spin a tall tale around that even to whomever the audience was. In Dragon Age: Inquisition she gives off a similar vibe with Justinia's death. At first she seems to be going through a crisis of faith and even a little bit of survivor's guilt, and while she initially vents to the Inquisitor, she seems to catch herself and then pull back before fully opening up. That conversation ends with her returning the stiff upper lip routine and "Well thats enough of that, back to work."
So I kind of have a hard time picturing her crying. I think she might be the type that tends to bottle up her emotions. She's a crying on the inside type, basically.
Yeah, and a lot of her success comes from how scared people are of her. If anyone saw her crying, showing vulnerability...her image could be ruined. In public, Leliana probably fights back any sign of weakness. She says so herself.
I do imagine she lets out everything she bottled up with the Warden every now and again when she was Left Hand, though. She doesn't have any image to keep up with them, s/he is someone she trusts entirely and would have no reservations on allowing them to see that part of her. I've always liked to think of it as the Warden being one of the last people who sees her as Leliana and not Sister Nightingale.
