If you didn't harden leliana and let Marjorlaine live she goes after her in the epilogue right? (wouldn't know, have always killed the b**ch). perhaps that's an alternative to how leliana is 'hardened'.

Han shot first, I was going to reply to your comment saying 'and my warden' till I realised you weren't referring to your warden in particular. Now i'm picturing several wardens......and now my brain has shut down.

I think Leliana getting "hardened" happend no matter what in DA: I. Atleast, that's the feeling I'm getting. Its easier to go from that point than to create 2 different versions of Leliana when she is gonna be more ruthless either way.
Yea, I think so too. I mean she kills Marjolaine no matter what

I agree, some old habits die hard.
As I've said before elsewhere, Leliana often seems to latch onto a cause or a person to give her purpose or a sense of direction and then devote herself to it. We see that with Marjolaine, the Chantry and the Warden, all of whom she allows to change her personality and beliefs.
I can imagine her getting tortured and cut off from her support system (currently the Chantry) would cause her to revert back to the more ruthless Leliana we saw in the Leliana's Song DLC and if you hardened her in Origins.
She's not a bad person, but without the morality chains she imposes upon herself, she definitely has the potential to become one.

I said pretty much the same thing a few posts earlier. I hated Leliana because of that trait at first, but she grew on me with time. She has a pretty fragile psyche. i think she actually is crazy in a way. She latched onto the Maker and came up with a borderline heretical interpretation of him to give herself someone she could never lose. Her line in the demo :'I want the world back' seems to indicate that she feels she has lost the Maker too. His creation is being destroyed/corrupted. That can't be easy for someone like her to witness.
Let's just call her the queen of the woobies.

Before I was quite content with her not being a romance option but since Bluedrake's mini analysis I wish I could play as my warden , just to help her through this.

Now I'm really hoping for a good relationship-development, if you can call it that, with Leliana in the game, in spite of her not being a LI.
#1314

She is only confirmed as not-a-LI for the Inquisitor.
If the Warden is dead, I wonder if Leliana might end up involved with one of the DA:I companions or advisors.

LoL we have more than 1 character that had worse life then she had...
In fact she had rather lighter life comparing to others only bad experience she had was her mentor betrayal besides she had not that bad life comparing to fenris ,issabela or zevran not mention other characters.

I consider her one of the most psychologically manipulative characters in a BioWare game... but I think much of it is unconscious. Leliana is trying to fill a void within her and she uses those around her to do so.
But she's not malicious. If anything, she tends to hurt herself in the long run.
One of the reasons I leave her unhardened is that I hate to undermine one of the few choices she's made for herself. She'll happily remold herself to the Warden's desires, and it felt like the only dialogue option that was even close to 'believe in yourself' was the 'stick with your Chantry sister mask.'

Exactly, as she seems to subconciously latch onto people with incredibly strong personalities, she matches quite a few traits of someone with Dependent Personality Disorder. For instance, her inability to see the Warden or Marjolaine in a bad light due to her infatuation with them, as well as her vision of the Maker making her feel important and part of a force greater than herself.
She does have an interesting psyche, as do most of the characters in DA.

Ooh! I get to post my Leliana-related ramblings?
One thing that struck me was the difference in her romance path with a male or female warden. If male, he makes the first move, if female, Leliana makes the first move. Why is that? Well, look at her past: born out of wedlock, mother died early, raised by an old lady, then taken over by Marjolaine. Leliana never had a significant relationship with a man. Sketch and Tug were just friends, and even then she treated them more like hired help. She was the one calling the shots in her DLC (one step below Marjolaine, that is). Then she was rescued by Dorothea. That would make her hesitant to make the first move on a man she genuinely liked, because it never happened before. All the important people in her life up to that point were women: her mother, Lady Cecily, Marjolaine and Mother Dorothea.
Another thing, I think deep down Leliana is insecure in her identity. She barely knew her mother, and I didn't get the feel that Lady Cecily really treated her as a daughter. Remember Leliana said she was taught to sing and dance to entertain her? That makes her seem more like a pet, a cherished one, but a pet nonetheless. It's easy to see how Marjolaine was able to take over her life so entirely. And her nickname? 'Pretty thing'! I don't think Dorothea helped her only out of kindness. Leliana had useful skills and a grudge against Marjolaine, now a common enemy for them. Leliana just isn't used to being treated as a person.
Then in the Chantry: she couldn't fit in because of her ideas about the Maker. This seems odd from her, considering how adept she is at becoming whoever she needs to be. Well, the one person who might have made her toe the line, Dorothea, was not there, so Leliana latched onto the next best thing: the Maker. Why is her interpretation so different from the gospel? Well, Leliana consistently demonstrates a need for approval. She was Cecily's pet because she wanted her approval. She was Marjolaine's pretty thing because she wanted her approval. She went along with Dorothea because she needed someone's, anyone's approval. The only way she could have the Maker's approval was by making him into an entirely different entity, one who is all loving. That way, how could she ever lose that approval? That explains her reaction to the defilement of the Ashes.
During her 'hardening' dialogue, I wish there had been an option to ask 'Well, what do you want to be?'
I'll leave for now. Please don't skin me alive if you disagree. Leliana would not approve.

At the same time... it might just be want she needs. She spends her time clinging to others, maybe having it torn away from her helps her finally be herself. Even if herself is pissed and out for blood.
When we win and the Inquisition saves the world, perhaps Leliana will have finally found herself.
Then she can live happily ever after with the Warden! (fingerscrossed, fingerscrossed, wantmylittlebluebabies, fingerscrossed)

I dislike that returning companions get 'darkened.' I understand they need to grow as characters, but our most prominent examples - Anders and Leliana - both took a swig of the grim and gritty.

Any ideas if Morrigan will romanceble? I wouldn't be surprised if she pretends to love the inquisitor it fits her power hungry ways.
