So she was sixteen when she first met Marjolaine. Been wondering that for a while, and apparently she started to wrap her around her little finger while Cecile was still alive. Interesting.

'To Leliana, who had lived a sheltered life with the pious, kindly Cecile, Marjolaine represented adventure and excitement; a knight-errant, come to rescue the lady in the secluded tower.'

Very interesting.

...and hey, this is kinda related to what we were talking about.

'While on a hunting trip, Marjolaine presented Leliana with her first bow and taught her to use it. Leliana's first inept attempt at shooting merely wounded the hart the hunters had run down. Distressed by the suffering of the animal, Leliana refused to finish it off. As Leliana watched, Marjolaine approached the wounded hart. With a practiced, steady hand, she pierced it through the eye with a long dirk, killing the beast immediately. Leliana vividly recalls Marjolaine's word then: "Never delay the inevitable. If you can strike, strike."

Also interestingly, there seems to be confirmation that Leliana's Song is the embellished version of the tale, whereas the story she told the Warden was the truth. It says she fled into Ferelden. She wasn't in Ferelden at the time.

Freaking sixteen? Her perspective of Marjolaine is interesting. It seems Leliana fits into the 'horrible judge of character' trope. She did it again when she saw Justinia as a savior.

So if she was in her mid twenties by DAO, and that was two years after the betrayal, it means she had been involved with Marjolaine for close to ten years. And then she served Justinia for about ten years... She's a loyal type, that's for sure.

There's the Warden for ten, nearly eleven, years now, too. Seems like that's the only big, influential relationship of hers that didn't deteriorate after a decent stretch of time. :S

I also like the little tidbit that she still drinks a bottle of brandy for Tug every year, and is still trying to hunt down whatever that 'The stone lives beneath Orlais' saying means.

Ok. I need this book. And she drinks a whole bottle? In one go? Drunk Leliana. Can't imagine she's feeling too good considering why she drinks it.

Well, it only says a glass. Apparently she pours it and toasts "Atrast tunsha, salroka."

Aw.

Aw.

Poor Leliana has a way of losing the people she cares about in one way or another. No wonder she's so protective of Josephine.

With the Warden away to search for a cure, I can't imagine she gets a lot of sleep between worrying about her love, worrying about the fate of the world, doing her job and the nightmares it gives her.

Actually, with the amount of stress she's accumulating here, I bet when the Warden comes back (because they will, damn it!), she'll run into their arms and promptly pass out from gathered stress and adrenaline crash. Then wake up in bed later held closely by the Warden who is stroking her hair.

Damn it, I need to learn to draw.

Blanket works too. My Warden wouldn't at all mind being the pillow. :3

Or enjoying a long soak in a hot, luxurious bath.

Spoiler

I do not have a thing for mutual grooming...

My Warden is quite a bit smaller than Leliana is, so the image of Leliana completely draped over her protectively like a blanket works for me. :S

I was upset that I got Vivienne instead of Leliana as Divine in the only playthrough that I've completed so far, but now I'm kind of glad I did. It was the world state in which my canon warden romanced Morrigan, meaning Leliana was all alone. I think she probably deserved a break...

She does in every world state, imo. One of the reasons I can't see anything other than her and my Warden relaxing somewhere warm and sunny for once after all this s*** as my ending for her. :S

The question is, of course, how long she could spend relaxing before she found some other adventure into which to throw herself. I'm not sure she's a "chilling out on the beach" kind of woman, in the long term. Maybe she could find a hobby...

Adventuring is the hobby. The Hero of Ferelden and former Left Hand of the Divine can get into all sorts of trouble.

The beach/warm Antivan summer home is just when they need to relax. :S

Makes sense she was 16. Leliana's devotion to Marjolaine did have a naive, starry-eyed "this was my first love" quality to it. Kinda makes that relationship a little more gross, though.

Also intriguing that it notes Cecile as being a very pious woman...Leliana was probably a 'good girl' before she started running with the wrong crowd and getting twisted by Marjolaine. Kinda like she's going back and forth between those lives. Started with the Chantry. Fell out of it. Came back to it...so on so on.

As usual, TV Tropes has the answer. Leli darling even has an entry in the video game section.

Adds a bit more weight to her "I must remember who I was, before I was left hand, spymaster, or a bard." line in the softened path, too, now that we perhaps have a bit more knowledge about who she was before Marjolaine or Justinia ever came into her life.

...probably feels like an entirely different life to her, by now...

Interestingly: Marjolaine found her when her life was peaceful and made it awful (even if Leliana didn't realize it at the time). Dorothea found her when her life was in turmoil and made it better (for a while). The Warden found her in an in-between state (peaceful life, but threatened world) and they teamed up. The Warden is really a good balance between the two extremes of her life.

I immediately thought of Lara Croft, and of course she's there too...

Leliana would be right at home in an Agatha Christie novel. She'd get on fabulously with Hercule Poirot (who is Belgian, not French.) :D

And ends up being the one big influence in her life that won't use her or hurt her in any way, and is still there...makes me feel fuzzy. Leliana needs that.

They just need to get that damned cure and get back ASAP.

Also, seeing as that page is just a snippet that seems to have more preceding it, I wonder if the often-discussed subject of Leliana's parentage will be addressed at all in the book.
