Very interesting video.

 

This video once again reminded me how different Leliana's voice is in Inquisition. Yes, it's the same voice actress, but Leliana's voice seems deeper and her accent is more Ferelden as opposed to Origins where her voice was very light and you could detect that french/orlesian accent in almost every sentence.

 

I like how she sounds now. She is mid to late 30s in Inquisition so of course she sounds older and more mature and the years she spent with her Warden in Ferelden and her travels while Left Hand are a reflection of that.

 

Now the only time she sounds Orlesian was when she got mad at Cullen when he refused to join Josie's tea party and cursed in Orlesian. I think whenever she gets nervous or angry she always does that.

I have, however, headcanoned that Lilith Surana's parents are still alive, in good health, and in contact, just to subvert how RPG protagonist families tend to work.

I did write a story once that mentioned what happened when Tabris explained Leliana to his father. Cyrion ended up getting very drunk.

Yeah, it's a bit of a shame at Surana's family never gets mentioned. My personal headcanon (and the one I'll be using for The Grey Path, hint hint ) is that she's from the Denerim Alienage, and was playmates with the City Elf Warden as a child, before she got taken to the Circle, while her devout parents basically died of heartbreak from having a mage for a daughter.

I tend to agree. She does look lovely in white, but it may not be the best color for a spymaster. It takes away all the "mysterious and slightly dangerous" vibe.

I've become a rather slow player nowadays (and Inquisition's pseudo-MMORPG setup doesn't help), so I've only now gotten to Leliana's personal quest that softens/hardens her. Now, I've looked at the wiki page for that set of choices, and it turns out that I screwed up the first two choices. Trying to avoid as many end-game/Trespasser spoilers, as well, please and thank you.

I'm pretty sure I didn't say "My sympathies" when she talked about the Divine dying (my canon Inquisitor is Dalish), and I encouraged her to kill the traitor, because it just makes sense to do so and it doesn't make much sense at all to not do so. Of the five important dialogues, is it possible to still kill Butler and have the choice of a softened Leliana 50+ hours of gameplay later during her personal quest? (Sympathy for her, Killing Butler, Men aren't disposable, Let Her go, Stop torturing yourself)

Leliana was definitely my favorite romance in Origins, and in Inquisition after half of the dialogues with her I just wanted my Mahariel to sweep in and kiss Leliana's worries away.

Honestly I didn't know that saying "My sympathies" was necessary. As far as I know the important choices in order to unharden her are three:

- Not killing Butler

- "Our men are not disposable" about the agents Leliana pulled back at Haven

- Not letting her kill Sister Natalie during her personal quest

 

The point of all this is showing Leliana that compassion is not a weakness. Sparing Butler does make sense in the end, because it's what convinces Leliana to spare Natalie as well. However if you tell her that traitors like Butler deserve to die (or if you remain silent) she'll go on with it and apply this reasoning with Natalie regardless of what you say; if I remember correctly she'll even call you out on the discrepancy if you ask her to spare her after killing him. So I'm pretty sure your Leliana will remain hardened unless you load a previous save and spare Butler.

I haven't come across this scene because I had Divine Leliana in my playthrough but this conversation does take an interesting turn when you openly ask Leliana if she wants to leave you.

 

"I know from experience how hard it can be to lay down your blade and accept that things have changed."

 

^ Awww, Leli, my Warden can't be more proud of his waifu. Even if they were half a continent apart during Inquisition my Warden had faith that Leliana will pull through even though she was hurting because of Justinia's death and plagued by her conscience for the things she did as Left Hand/Spymaster. They had their arguments, but my Warden always knew Leliana was the better and stronger person of the two.

The wiki says that it's safest to say all five of those things if you want softened Leliana /shrug. With Butler, I actually meant that it doesn't make much sense from the future Inquisitor's point of view, or even the Inquisition's. They don't know what is going on with the Breach or who is behind it, etc, so letting a traitor run around with sensitive information when the Inky could try to minimize the damage doesn't make sense to me. I always say or write something vaguely at first and then I almost always have to clarify, sorry about that!

 

I should give hardened Leliana a try though, see if I like her like that for my head canon world state. If I do have to reload, I may just go play through Origins again, ha.

Ah yes, one of my favorite characters! The morally conflicted spymaster with the bubbly personality which occasionally shows when she lets her guard down

 

Also her character design in DA:I is gorgeous. Whoever at Bioware came up with that outfit is a genius.

I can see why people like the pairing; they're both gorgeous women, so naturally you want to see them take each other's clothes off.

 

But putting aside the fact that Morrigan may be the most heterosexual woman in all of Thedas, I can't imagine two people LESS inclined to lust after another. Maybe Blackwall/Vivienne? Cole/Sera? Merrill/Varric? Oh yuk, that last one made me vomit a little in my mouth.

 

People have a weird fascination with shipping characters who don't particularly like one another. That isn't limited to just DA's fanbase either.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was Meredith and Orsino fanfic. I'd sooner gouge my own eyes out with a fork than actually look for it, but I don't doubt it exists.

How do you mean exactly that she is careless? As in she doesn't care whether her life is in danger or?

 

I like how her Divine epilogues were written since they show that no matter if you soften/harden her neither side of her personality is perfect. If she's softened she nearly gets killed a few times because she tries first and foremost to settle things peacefully and if she's hardened she becomes brutal and terrifying to her enemies.

I'd note the "seemingly" - I wouldn't assume that Leliana isn't quietly taking appropriate precautions, she's just not responding in kind and downplaying them publicly.

(She's also got an Inquisitorial honour guard and a Hero of Fereldan to watch her back, in my Canon at least)
