Hopefully heavy armor + defensive spells won't end up being totally overpowered like in DA:O

Thing is, if these are the only specializations we got.. does that mean playing a Dalish mage wouldn't get us any Dalish specific tree? I'd really hoped to get some keeper magic by playing an elf.
Also I doubt any of the companions will have any of these 'stock' specializations, most likely each one will have a unique tree of his/her own much like DA2.

I wonder if companions will have their own unique specializations (DA2), or will be using the same specializations as the Inquisitor (DA:O)

I could see every companion having one of the trees, as there are both 9 companions and 9 specializations.
Although a unique tree would be nice to have.

I would bet on them having specific specializations. It helps differentiate the roll for characters who are the same class.
For example; for the warriors, Casandra will probably be the tankiest, Iron Bull will hit the hardest, and Mcbeardy will be somewhere in between. Probably with added bonuses against Darkspawn as well.

No Spirit Healer
Who needs healing when you can raise the dead?

I'm leaning towards what TheJediSaint said above... I mean since we have 3 companions of each class and 3 specializations for each it'd be a little redundant to have 2 characters (inquisitor and a companion) with the same specialization. Well, unless that's your preference though given the choice.

I think there will be a built in kit for the Inquisitor that is like its own specialization. Like the Grey Warden skills from Warden's Keep but way more depth/detail. And then we get to pick one of these nine as our "second" specialization. That's my theory anyways.
The Knight Enchanter reminds me of the Vanguard spec from Mass Effect. Also I'd imagine companions have their own kits like in Dragon Age 2.

If I had to guess, it would be:
- Champion: Grey Warden
- Templar: Cassandra
- Reaver: Iron Bull
- Artificer: Varric (duh)
- Assassin: Cole
- Tempest: Sera
- Knight Enchanter: Dorian
- Necromancer: Solas
- Rift Mage: Vivienne

I was hoping for bard, but that's ok, the new spec is interesting enough.

Nah, they'll properly go the DA2 route, every companion gets their own, unique specialization.

Sooo... I'm guessing Spirit Healer isn't a specialization? So every mage gets access to healing now?
I would guess.
They do want to limit party healing potential so it seems like they are doing away with dedicated heal specs.

I always thought of Cassandra as a Tank, also can never picture Vivienne with any of the mentioned specializations... Necromancer? no, Knight Enchanter? no, Rift Mage? No.
Kinda reinforces the notion every companion gets his/her own unique tree.

Those who can tap into the raw energy of the Fade and block the whispering temptations of demons are truly exceptional. When they turn that mental focus onto the field of war, they can be truly terrifying opponents. Rains of fire, walls of ice, or even the ability to heal allies make up a mage’s toolkit. Most employ considerable skills rendering foes not only weakened, but also vulnerable to physical attacks, setting up opportunities for their teammates to.
My guess is they just put in some unique trees, and to get blood magic you need to do something very dangerous since they said that they want make it harder to get and not something you can get with a button press.
Also its likely they just combined some elements of previous specialization to get the new ones, or just combined them under a new ability tree, like adding shadow into either Assassin or artficer or just added into a stealth tree or something.

So Knight Enchanters can wield "blades of arcane force." I sure hope that means something along the lines of magic lightsabers, or I'll be going Assassin for my first playthrough.
EA does have the licence for Star Wars games, so they could probably get away with it.

We have a new version of Arcane Warrior, so my gameplay choice is decided.
My Elf (or Qunari) Mage is gonna run around, stab people, have Earth Armor (peez?), and shoot lightning.

Definitely going to be a Knight Enchanter, although something like Knight Magi would sound better.

I'm guessing (key word) that the reaver is going to fill a similar niche.
