So uhmm now all Bioware games need to have the same number of male and female companions? Because of what?
This is probably the only company that cares about equality etc. so keep your pants on.

Regarding the number of female characters, it seems to me that in DA games the female characters have typically been more plot critical than male ones.
In DA:O you've got Leliana and Morrigan, vs Alistair on the male side.
In DA2 you've got Merril(Act 1 critical), Isabella(Act 2 critical), and Bethany(Act 1 critical), vs Carver(Act 1 critical) and Anders(Act1&3 critical).
I play straight romances with a male main character, and I found it kind of nice. Having the character I'm romancing be significant to the plot, as opposed to say Zevran, Sebastian or Fenris, made the plot feel more meaningful to me as a whole.
I'll just leave this last comment.
The trailer is called Dragon Age Inquisition Gameplay trailer, which unsurprisingly is designed first and foremost to show of gameplay. If it was a trailer designed around customization you might actually have a point, but it's not and you don't
I don't know where you watched that Trailer, but on Youtube it's called: "DRAGON AGE™: INQUISITION Gameplay Trailer - The Inquisitor"
The most important Thing about the Inquisitor to many People is his/her customizability, so you can't blame anyone for expecting there would be some of that in the Trailer.

Hmm, Leliana wasn't plot critical inside DA:O itself was she?

i wouldn't think so, considering you can leave her in Lothering and never recruit her.
"Sitting down and shutting up" re: equal representation in video game marketing means never getting equal representation. Squeaky wheel and all that.
Just because it isn't important to you doesn't mean it isn't important to me, and nobody can tell me what to think or feel. Nobody.
I'm less upset about the 6:3 gender ratio. DA:O had less female companions than males, but I thought the female companions were great, and made up for quantity with quality. I'm willing to believe DAI will do the same.
I'm a pretty militant feminist, and I'm fine with the ratio. I just want the female companions they DO have are well written, which they've generally done a good job with in the past, especially in such a strongly male-dominated industry. That being said, I definitely plan on playing a female Inquisitor and had I only seen trailers and marketing materials, I might not even know that's possible since the only Inquisitor they've shown is Mr. Generic White Dude™.
It's extremely disappointing. Is it because they're afraid men won't buy the game if the protagonist is a female, but know women will buy it regardless? I guess the "canon" Inquisitor must be a man. Can't have women saving the world, you know? Too many hormones involved. Also, male gamers might feel emasculated. We can't have that, surely.
Well they do not need to have the same number of companions but than do not preach about representation and sexism if you cannot back it up. It is all nice and dandy till you need to do something about it.
I just feel really disappointed with them. That is all.
She felt that way to me with the events surrounding the Ashes and her Maker visions. Its just my interpretation though. My feeling on companions in DA:O is that many of the male ones felt more like side characters, except Alistair, who had a very main characterish feel to him, being the bastard prince and all.
Hmm, Leliana wasn't plot critical inside DA:O itself was she?
It's possible to not even recruit Leliana, so I would say she's not plot critical.
I'd also argue that Varric is pretty critical to DA2, especially act 1.

Well, precisely.
In addition, you also have the option of never recruiting Isabela.
He's pretty hidden by the helmet but his face looked the lowest res to me. I hope the character creator will allow us to create Inquisitors that look just as amazing as the rest of the characters in that trailer. Don't give a sh*t that they used a white man as the demo Inquisitor. Players who know the series know you can play as whatever you want.
Generally, when I'm watching trailers of a game that I know has a customizable PC, I think of the shown character as "generic placeholder" / straight white male. However, when the character I keep seeing in ads is a unique model (cannot be recreated via CC) then it kind of errs into "This is canon" realm. Rather than feeling , for example, that "This is Shepard. And this is Shepard, too." I get more of a "THIS is Shepard.. but I guess you can make like someone else and stuff if you want?"
I don't get extremely offended, since I'm aware of the majority audience etc., but it's why I tend to focus more on the environment, companions, story, etc. rather than the actual PC when it comes to RPGs.
OT: The thing I hate most of about unique 'main' player models is that the customizable ones never look as good hahah
You can also kill Leliana, so I wouldn`t call her critical at all. Or...you could think you killed her, anyway.

Really?
Sweet!
I'm doing a DA2 playthrough right now where I hope NOT to recruit her, Merril after the forced conscription usually stays in the alienage the whole game.

Apparently she survived her "death" at the Urn. Perhaps she was only wounded. But that's another topic.
What I don't get is why there's no mention of it in the site, we know about the four playable races since last year, why not advertise it ?
Yeah, i don't get it either. All i see is white male human in their site. ![]()

I've never been inclined to use Merrill either!
Although I recently downloaded a mod that made her a healer, which means I can use her instead of anders to hear more banter.

It's possible to never even speak to Isabela, and to never see Fenris at all. (I almost missed him by accident on my first run, since my Hawke didn't really want to help lyrium smugglers. Lucky she needed a few extra sovreigns before the Deep Roads.)
Well we've all got differentish playthroughs.
Varric didn't feel like a main character to me, because the story was never about him. Part of that may have to do with his role as storytellter.
To me, Leliana always screamed "super important chosen one type character here".
Sten doesn't seem like that, he's a soldier. Neither does Oghren, Zevran,Shale, or Wynne.
While say, Aveline is involved in the prologue and Act 1 of DA2, she comes across as very much a supporting character.
Spoiler

I'm not saying we haven't seen a Female Inquisitor at all, but we've definitely seen more of the Male at this point. Have we seen a trailer featuring a female yet? No? We have some concept art. It hardly feels equal, despite your well thought out counter-argument. I'm asking for equal representation in mainstream marketing, why is that a bad thing?
Yeah, I missed Fenris. Good thing I liked Aveline

Wounded by losing her head ![]()

None of those images have a woman in the actual game, which is what the thread is about.
