We have quite a few VFX packs out there, and sorting through them might be a bit of a challenge for a builder. It could be useful for somebody to go through the list and create/maintain a combined catalogue and hak file. Is anybody interested in working on this as a project? ![]()
Complete VFX catalogue? Anybody interested in building one?

I'd like a complete catalogue of the existing VFX that come with the game, let alone all those custom VFX that were created by the community! There seem to be plenty of SEF files that were never implemented in the final expansions. I've found a few of them useful, but only because I gave them a try based on keywords in their names. I'm sure there are plenty there that look great, but have been named something unintuitive so my keyword searches don't find them.

The Power Bar plugin by Codepoetz has a VFX browser that works pretty well. I use it all the time. It doesn't list it in the description, but it's there.

I use that all the time, too, but a little catalogue of images would be nice to scan through quickly.

A simple list of names and descriptions would do the trick - green acid AOE explosion, small fire impact, purple cloud with hot pink dust motes, etc. Whether the VFX is location-based, object-based, a beam, a billboard, etc. Whether it's related to a specific spell or ability. That would allow you to narrow down the list of effects before you start previewing them.

I've got a list of descriptions for the vfx that are in the game in vol. 2 of my notes, but it was tedious to put together. That Powerbar option sounds like a useful approach.
Maybe something on the wiki site?

Well, I personally would prefer thumbnails over text descriptions, though text descriptions would be a good additional resource. One trouble with descriptions rather than a visual index, aside from taking longer to scan, is that the choice of word used in the descriptions might not match what you think of to look for. We have that issue with the placeables. What are you looking for? A chest? Well, there might be some chests called something else, like "trunk", "box", or "footlocker", which wouldn't appear in your search.

A spreadsheet with multiple category columns would allow a user to sort on any column they wanted in order to group similar effects. Although the more columns you include, the more work it is to produce the spreadsheet to begin with.
Some dummy data (may not reflect actual VFX in the game):
SEF Name Description Size Colour FX Type Usage Energy Type
fx_acid_aoe Large acid splash Large Green Particle AOE Acid
fx_imp_firesml Fire impact sparks Small Orange Particle Impact Fire
fx_beam_holy Divine beam of light N/A White Beam Ray Positive
fx_song_portal Song portal Medium Purple Billboard Placed N/A
