Hello there, MEGD.
Today, I spent a few hours trying to aquire Mass Effect. The first game, not the yet-to-be-released Mass Effect 2.

Today, I was unsuccessful. It's almost like Mass Effect have been completely discontinued. All-in-all, it's not an enormous deal. I'm a long-time pirate. I have played Mass Effect already. But I make it a point to buy all of Bioware's games legitimaly. In preperation for Mass Effect 2, I decided that if I started today, I'd be done with Mass Effect before next Thursday (release date in Sweden).

Instead, the game is impossible to find. After visiting several stores, two of them Gamestop stores in the biggest malls in my entire region, ALL of them completely plastered with Mass Effect 2 posters, cut-outs and pre-order-now-or-your-firstborn-will-be-eaten-by-grues leaflets EVERYWHERE, I come to the conclusion that it simply cannot be found.

Why, I ask myself? WHY? There are several years older games, some released just last year, already sold as "classic" or cheaper versions. Why wasn't Mass Effect (1) re-marketed or re-released in anticipation of the long-awaited sequel?

This is useless.

For the record, I blame Electronic Arts. Everything has been going downhill since they took over.

Bah, I say. BAH! *shakes fist at God*

The game is available on Steam and Direct2Drive for $20.

You're probably not going to find the PC version in a retail store. Shelf space for PC gamers is extremely limited. However, I have seen the 360 version at some retail stores and if you're just trying to get a saved game you could rent it as most places still have it.

You know you can download ME for like 10 dollars or something on Steam. If you're planning to play it on your PC, I would just go that route.

I'm honestly surprised if you're having trouble finding a copy of the game for Xbox. I've never not seen it at any retailer.

Have you tried Steam? There you will be able to get Mass Effect legit and therefore you are not forced to piracy. Simple, easy and you don't have to leave your seat ;)

Mass Effect for the 360 has become a platinum hit and is now availible on demand from the Xbox Live Marketplace. http://www.xbox.com/...and/default.htm
For the PC it can be legally acquired from several online streaming stores. e.g. Direct2Drive http://www.direct2dr...Effect-Download

Uhh so you are willing to run around town to try to find the game in a store, but are too lazy to just buy it off Steam or D2D?

Well, you live in Sweden so I doubt it was cost effective to continue to provide physical copies of the PC version over there (which has been effectively killed, due to DRM, so I doubt it can be found much anywhere)

Safer bet with ME PC is Steam. ME2 will be better physical though, it just has a disc check.

Unless we're talking 360 here, which I'm sure is now set to a "Platinum" games package and is in circulation. Maybe not in sweden though.

I'm also pretty tired of people thinking that EA is the same as they were in 2004, or even the 1990's-early 2000's.

They had a pretty radical polar shift in 2007 and Bioware becoming a subsidiary has improved things on both sides.

360 or pc?

On a side note, unless you're trolling, it's not usually the best idea to admit to piracy on official forums ;p

Ack! NO! I went into a couple of stores today and I totally couldn't find a particular product. Hence I MUST break the law!

Look, I support media sharing, but even I think the title of this post is stupid.

Yeah was going to say, Amazon.com is your friend, but I don't know what the Swedish equivalent/URL is or if they have different stock.

I could understand the OP's position if it was a 10-15 year old game that is notorious to find, but we're talking about a 2 year old game that is available everywhere.

Pirates use the stupidest reasons to pirate a game.

BTW imports made from cracked versions of ME1 have not been tested with the sequel, so you may or may not have a smooth experience transferring your character. You can gamble, though.

Hmm....opened 3 tabs and found this in 30 seconds;

Ebay

Best Buy

Steam

So it's really not that you're forced to pirate it, just that you're lazy and don't want to pay for it....right? I'm right aren't I?

nobody is forcing you. The game is available on Steam, games on demand...and has been sitting on store shelves for over 2 years.

If you waited until there was a rush to purchase the game, then that's your fault.

To be fair, I totally support pirating of games which are dead/discontinued from manufacture.

Propagation of the software to keep it alive is great, especially for games like Planescape Torment which can only be bought second hand.

Mass Effect, however, isn't dead.

You, OP, are the reason why companies produce fewer and fewer games for PCs.

"Forced into piracy"?

That is so utterly stupid I can't even begin to describe it ...

I'll just stop here. You are a moron.
