After the YMIR mech shows up, just how long does that fight go on? Are there a certain number of enemies that need to spawn? A timer?

I am going to guess it is tied to the number of enemies that spawn, and that if enough enemies spawn and the mech is still around it will turn on you when that number is reached.

Can the battle be sped up if you kill the mech/let it die quickly?

I don't remember 100%. But one playthrough I did focus fire on the mech (it eventually turned around and attacked me and Garrus [I was sniping]). After it died from the head-shot self-destruct the enemies appeared to spawn at the same rate with the same numbers as they did before (or something close to it), so I think it is based off of a timer/body count rather than anything to do with the mech.

It's body count.

You can't see more Eclipse Mercs appear before killing, IDK, 2 or 3 from the previous wave

Start Killing, then you'll get Eclipse Vanguards and for last, that Salarian which I forgot the name now

Yep it is wave based.  And if you support the YMIR, it will last longer and assist you longer.  The YMIR isn't really a trigger, it just helps you or doesn't base don if you hacked it and if you shoot it.

Most of that mission is wave based, except for the shutter section and the gunship section.

But what causes the mech to turn on you? I always try to support the mech, but eventually it almost always turns on me at some point when it is down to health. (Which is convenient since it is very easy to dispatch at that point.)

I always thought that when you sabotaged, it just made it so it couldn't distinguish between friend and foe. In other words, kill everything.

I doubt that very much. I usually take up position on the mech's flank, pretty close to it so that I have a clear shot at the in-coming mercs and even though it is just a few meters away it never bothers me until it is down to health, and usually half health at that.

You could be right. Maybe it just wears off after enough eclipse are dead.

Maybe it wears off when Jaroth spawns.

There you go, that's probably it.

Yes, or if you start shooting at it, then it will attack you.

I always stayed on the balcony and let the mech do the work. By the time it gets to health it usually turns around and tries to shoot at me. By that time its one shot and it blows up.

Yes it does. When Jaroth (I think that is the Eclipse leader's name) shows up, the YMIR will turn around and attack you.

Pisses me off when the mech, my squad, and I are destroying everything in sight and then all of a sudden my shields are gone and I am nowhere near any good cover and the mech still has defenses.

In Legion's words: "This unit cannot distinguish between ally and enemy".

Which means that it attacks everyone on sight, like the reprogrammed mechs in Freedom's Progress. That's why it attacks you :)

Read the above posts. You will see that the trigger for it attacking Shepard is Jeroth spawning.

Is it? In all my playthoughts the mech never survived that far.

Wish I could tell stupid Garrus to stop shooting at it...

I use that time to take it out. If the headshot is pulled off, its pretty much going to take a bunch of mercs with it and make things a little easier on me. Beats having it starting to breath down my neck because it was ignored.
