There is no difference between a demon and a spirit, besides the fact that spirits embody 'good' concepts and demons embody 'evil' concepts. It lies in the eyes of the beholder to judge.
People were speculating that Cole was some sort of spirit of compassion, weren't they?
I think that's a really interesting theory.

Although if he ages, sleeps, eats, he's not quite just a spirit or demon, is he?
He's a spirity fleshy...thing.

But that's his sort of raison d'etre - to help people unconditionally.

And hopefully we'll be able to get him to understand the grayer areas of life so he can better accomplish this without paving a road to hell with good intentions.
But yes he means well.

He is, but in regards of sexuality, he's completely 'innocent' (as his confrontations with a certain female pirate shown). He doesn't feel anything.yeah, but lufy is oblivious to most things anyway
As I said, I don't think it's a completely fitting comparison, but I think it's close enough.

Yea I know, it shows the other side to his personality. I mean he can be as innocent as a child at times (having the mind set of a child that he does) and other times he is dangerous!

He looks like one of those generic, troubled American kids from the movies who sell themselves to other guys for drug money, get bullied throughout high school and then murder their mom for some reason.
And that haircut.

He was. In Asunder. He has clearly changed a lot since then it would be unwise to make assumptions.

I was referring to how Gaider described Cole. I don't recall if he referred to Asunder Cole or Cole in general even in DAI., so I didn't say if it'll be like this in DAI. If someone has a link of the post I'd appreciate it.He was. In Asunder. He has clearly changed a lot since then it would be unwise to make assumptions.
I don't have a problem to say i think he'll be like this in DAI too though. What's the problem in making Assumptions or forming theories?

A lot of people are acting like certain things are confirmed and set in stone when they have not been. They take a piece of what David said and apply it to all things everywhere.

What he said was pretty clear as well as the implied disgust that went with it.

A demon of despair would also hang around helpless people and depending how confuse and crazy the demon is, it might even thinking it is helping them...

That was my incredibly sappy theory and I am beside myself that judging by that interview it might not be as wishful-thinking as I thought. Then again, azarhal could be right and he could be a despair demon originally, since he's drawn to pain...
Wouldn't it be interesting, though, if Compassion spirits/Despair demons were the same thing in essence? They're both drawn to the same emotion, the difference is how they respond to it. And that sort of difference can be put down to a choice, not a binary state of being.

Based on notes that you can find (I don't remember whether they're on the templar's person, or elsewhere in the Circle), he wasn't doing well in the templars and was close to being reassigned or maybe ejected. The notes contain some written reactions from him, suggesting that he was taking this very badly.
The warden gets to choose whether to fight the demon and templar, they don't attack on sight. The demon stresses that all it wants is for them to be left alone. Personally, I think the demon improved the templar's situation, although I'm aware that others think it's bad because he's living a lie.
I kind of see Cole like that demon. He killed for partially selfish reasons (he thought he would fade away otherwise), but he did give people some measure of peace.
I think that while demons have selfish motives, sometimes (very rarely) their selfish motives completely align with a mortal's interest, and there can be a mutually beneficial relationship. Just as sometimes a "good" spirit's motives sometimes clash with the interests and happiness of mortals.
