I don't understand that myself. Maybe Janders left a bad taste in some mouths?

To be honest, I think that if a person hasn't read Asunder and doesn't know who Cole is, they should avoid this thread.

Of course, people can do as they wish, but I feel that unstructured gossip about a character by fans who are really mostly speculating isn't the best introduction to them. Any information we could give would likely be fragmented and incomplete, and it seems like it's just confusing or worrying people and giving them unnecessary biases.

My personal recommendation would be to 1) read Asunder yourself and be introduced to the character that way or 2) wait until the game is out and be introduced to the character that way.

Eh, I don't even think it's necessarily that. It was the parasitic nature he somewhat held in the novel that has me a tad worried. At it's most basic, Cole was feeding upon the deaths of those people to stay grounded within the mortal world. And let's face it, he was truly using blood magic to manipulate minds into forgetting him.

I think more of black or dark-brown eyes because they tend to create the 'haunted look' along with blonde hair. Much like this:

Spoiler

Ooooooh. Shiny. Can we see it?

Jeezbus, What.A.Cutie. ...is Cole himself based on this look? or personality wise? ;w; goodness!

EDIT: <: My worst fears has come true...I'm number one at the top of a page!

At the very least, I can empathize where this obviously came from in Gaider, cause I've felt the same before.

The thing about Cole is, yes some of the stuff he did was bad, but a lot of the people claiming they want to murder knife him on sight will turn around and defend horrible things other companions have done. Cole's trespasses seem awfully tame in comparison to some of the things we've seen from other popular companions, at least in my opinion.

I'm hoping that Cole's apparent personality shift in Asunder's epilogue is evidence that he's in control of his existence now, and won't need blood to sustain himself. Though, the leaked survey suggested that the Inquisitor can influence Cole to either "prey on the living or join them."

I must admit, I am quite surprised at the amount of hostility some people show towards Cole because it seemed to me that the character had been deliberately written to be sympathetic.

Oh oh! I think I know why people don't like Cole.

It's how he's depicted in the books. Many people automatically would call him an 'emo pretty boy' thing because of how deep in emotional turmoil he was throughout the book because of the situation. There are people who cannot stand to be around that or read about it because it's 'over dramatic' for them and generally I see the ones who don't like say Cole or Fenris like the more up beat jokey characters who wear a mask to hide any sort of angst they have vs a character who wears it on their sleeve. It's generally with the people who can't sympathies with the characters issues, and would rather not have to dig through all of the emotional outbursts and trama the character has like a person would and simply doesn't want to associate with them.

Key things being that he's 'emo' and 'whiney' even though his situation to some people who can understand that sort of emotional issue, they can't relate to it. So they don't understand to why the character is like that and just go to the 'angsty brooding' bit as a negative characteristic. They can't relate, or put themselves into that mindset as to why that character is acting a certain way.

There are characters where it has been done really badly and is really annoying, but I think Cole is very successful in how understandable his plight is. Certainly in a book where the main underlying theme of it is 'lonely' with the characters. Every single person at one point or another have mentioned the weight and suffocating nature of loneliness in their own way, Cole just happened to be a more often voice being a main character with more is own chapters.

Also a good sign of a good character tends to be when the character leaves an impression on the person, good or bad one. Even if they may not like the way the character is built it doesn't mean that they are a bad character, rather it hits a personal taste thing.

The whole 'oh because he's a demon' excuses don't make much sense to me, since we've had party members that are murderers, possessed, morally darker, liars about everything they are, and disgusting pervs. They get the pass cards, but all the characters in DA games are... well they kill loads of people.

I find this irritating as well. Especially considering many of the actions player characters can take, and other companions have taken. Cole certainly is not among the worst of them given that were in a dark fantasy setting. Sten slaughtered an entire family, Oghren killed a child, Zevran is an assassin, Isabela did horrible things to slaves, Anders...lol yeah. Etcetera, etcetera.

Cole is judged way too harshly.

I think Omikuji is basically right about how a lot of people see Cole.

I think some people are getting a "supernatural romance emo guy" vibe from him, but I think they're also misreading Gaider's intent pretty extensively.

Ok, I think I have to come back and explain a few things about my view of Cole.  I don't hate the character of Cole, as a matter of fact, I think he is an outstanding addition to the DA universe and a very well developed character for the story in Asunder.  I guess I am breaking a bit of the 4th wall when it comes to him tho, as I am using my knowledge of the character from the book to influence how my Inquisitor will act in the game.  I don't hate him as a character, I just see him for what he is, a demon.  And I know there will  be those that try to argue against me on this, but the major clue was there at the end when *spoiler!!!* Lambert used the Litany of Adralla on Cole and dispelled everything he was doing.  It was at that point that both Cole and Rhys realized what Cole was.  The Litany only works on blood magic and demons, as stated in the wiki.  It would not have worked unless Cole is either a blood mage or demon.  My problem with Cole is that so many seem to dismiss this out of hand and only focus on the little crying image of a boy that this demon is attempting to emulate (although I will accede to the point that I do not believe the demon was being malevolent about it, as it did not remember that it was a demon until the end).

What I was trying to get across before was that I am going to have to reserve final judgment about Cole when I meet him in game as "me" knowing what he is should not dictate how my character perceives him in game.  Eliminate as much of the 4th wall breaking as I can.  But since I "do" know what he is, I personally would not hesitate to send him back to the fade.

What we all have to keep in mind is that the whole question now floating around regarding Cole's status is a thing being directed toward potential players that have not read Asunder and do not know what he is.  Since it is very likely that many players of DA:I will not have read the book and need to be hooked onto the character as an awesome mystery to solve.

I know I am probably not clearing up my views on Cole as much as I would like, but let's all just agree that he is a very interesting take on how a spirit/demon would try to emulate a person.  :D

Also, I think that if they go one way, I could be perfectly satisfied with him as a companion.  If there was the option in game, to influence him to become a good "spirit," or to drive him to be full on "demon,"  that would be an awesome character mechanic.  B)

Also-also, to those talking about romancing Cole?  Are you serious?  This has nothing to do with any "vibe" or any crap like that.  DG himself stated he's an adult with the mind of a 12 year old!  That's just sick really...

It's understandable that everyone might not like every character, and I don't fault people that don't wish to let Cole become a part of their companions. The companions are sort of designed in a way that they might not fit everyone's tastes after all. I just hope they, like most people in this thread that are against Cole (surprisingly) have said they would, give him a chance in the intro of his character.

And I have a strange feeling Anders did sort of cause most of the hate Cole gets. Throughout Asunder, Cole's character grows and becomes more contemplative of his actions and considerate even if he is a demon. But I think a lot of the "haters" just see an "emo spirit/demon/abom" and dismiss his character because of that, regardless of his personal development as he essentially becomes a better "person".

I just want to say though...the hate in this thread is minimal, if not almost non-existent compared to other threads where certain people just continuously spout off how they want to murderknife X character as soon as they walk on screen. Pretty much everyone here has said they want to give Cole a chance at least. (so good on you guys, thanks for being kind here  ;) )

It's good there's a lack of hate in here! :D I saw some of the earlier topics on Cole and it was just rampant with huff puffing, but it seems like the fact that he's been spotted on the team and there's 99.99% chance it's him it's died down the huff puffing. Just a lot of theory crafting in here and CSI, which is super fun 8D

Though now that you've said it Faerah someones going to burst in here and gobbly ****** the good feelings. D8<

Also yeah, Cole may be vastly different to how he was in the book because of the "reveal" at the end, and that's great. It means he can be someone who is different but the same, and you probably wont need to read the book at all to get the chance to know him since really, we didn't learn a thing about him in the book as a character beyond the fact he's lonely and is baffled by his situation. No answers. Even the demon/spirit thing isn't even factual because of the powerful spirit sensing people having no clue what's up with Cole. Even if that book did work on Cole, it doesn't outright label him 100% that because the situation is so confusing, and Lambert being a butt autos to omg demonz and ebil mages, so he isn't a reliable source at all.

It does make me wonder if he is sort of blood magey and people don't like blood mages in the game for lore reasons, I wonder how they were to Merrill? The outright blood mage who talks with demons, the only huff I saw about her was with the fact she was childlike and romancing her was really weird for people.

Well, Cole isn't a mage, but as a spirit/demon he can work blood magic, as he did on many people in the White Spire.
