He wasn't. Original Cole is dead. This Cole is a fade creature, demons can use magic but he isn't a mage.

Imshael in Masked Empire remarks that making people invisible(like Cole's power) is a common fade trick.

I would love to see the hat as Cole's personal trinket. At least now with Patrick writing him we won't be expecting his hat to be carried off with the wind and lost forever.

I hope Cole and Vivienne can grow to like each other, or at least respect each other part in the inquisition. Because, these two are way up there in my favorite companion list, but Patrick did say on twitter, that the character will grow and change their opinion.

Oh good lord, what have you done. I didn't make the link before but Vivi's like one of my favourite characters of all time, and now I'm not going to be able to unassociate that hat with him ;_;

 

Inexperienced kids of supernatural origins who have to decide how best to spend their (possibly short) time in the world and choose to try to make it better for other people, possibly in opposition to their nature/intended purpose? ...I can't unsee it.

 

I have a terrible feeling it's going to end the same way, too.

Dear god, I'd forgotten about that quote! Oh god... those two really are alike. I predict the ending of DA:I will make me cry, then...

 

Edit: They're even both related to a group (Black Mages for Vivi, Demons for Cole, even though we're not sure if he is or not) that causes destruction/chaos and as a result has made many people hostile towards them in spite of those that defy the stereotype (Black Mage Village, friendly fade spirits)

We learn that in order to cure tranquility the cooperation of a Fade spirit (demonic or otherwise) is needed.  They have to psychically "touch" the minds of the Tranquil and thus re-open the connection.  Weeeell, here we have our very own benevolent Fade entity!  Kinda leaves the door wide open for this sort of quest IMO.  Anyone else think so?

 

...oh.  OH.  I just had a feels.  What if we encounter Rhys who has been captured as a member of the mage resistance and made tranquil, and it's Cole who can save him?!?  /dies/

That'd be so sweet but so tragic. I don't want to see Cole get his heart broken over seeing his dearest friend become tranquil. *sniff* But on the other hand, it'd be so heartwarming to see him save Rhys, especially after all the trouble he caused in Asunder.

Seeing the latest on Cole has just confirmed for me who my first Inquisitor is going to be.   This is not because I want to romance him; in fact I feel all motherly and protective towards him.   My first Inquisitor though is a female elf mage character I have been working on and unlike Vivienne she would not want to banish Cole.   At the beginning, after all those people have died, she will have lost someone dear to her too, so they can comfort each other.      Her sentiments about helping people even if they don't remember it, echo her own, so I think it is going to be like having a brother for her - a slightly strange and just a little scary brother - but a kindred spirit all the same.   Oh and the best part is - she has albinism.

But if we're being clear cut about it - they're pushing the compassionate side of Cole so hard (harder than they ever did in Asunder, tbh) that I would guess Cole's chance of surviving beyond Inquisition is approximately zero. I'm going to cry a whole lot :/

Merrill was a ditz and childish, and was raised in an inxsular clan leaving her clueless to the shem world , sure. She wasnt developmentally delayed like Cole clearly is in the book. That's a huge difference. She could sign a legally binding contract and understands what intimacy is. Cole can't and doesn't.

 

You're basing this off of what David Gaider said. I understand that Gaider is the original writer of the character, but Patrick Weekes took over writing Cole for Inquisition. His interview discussing Cole suggests that Cole has matured. Being a spirit/demon, he wouldn't understand intimacy at first. That's because he is NOT human, elf, or Qunari. He's a spirit or demon from the fade, and he's been learning.

 

Now, I understand that people wouldn't want to have Cole as a romance after Gaider's words on the subject. I do understand that and respect your decision. I do not respect people coming on here and knocking the other side down, telling them that they're wrong to think the way they do. (Not that I'm saying you're doing that, since I can see that you're just arguing a point. Regardless, there are others here in this thread doing so.)

But why would being compassionate make Cole not survive? Merrill survived DA2, Alistair often survived DOA. Compassionate people don't have to die.

Some fans are still in denial. Understandable but...

Cole dying seems very likely. Though if we don't have to recruit him this would be purely optional

I think it would be such a bittersweet mirror-image, as Rhys was the first one to make Cole feel human, and then Cole would be the one to make Rhys feel emotions again.  Seriously, this is some hardcore feels right here, I kinda love it.

 

EDIT - I'm of the same kinda mindset that I'm wary about Cole's end-game status.  I'm expecting tears, as well.  Even if we end of closing the Fade rips and he's not "dead", maybe he gets trapped back in the Fade?  Tears, I say, tears!

Most characters have points in their plot where they can die and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Cole does, also, but most characters don't have unavoidable deaths. Cole might, but I don't think it's any more given than anyone else.
