Question to the thread:

Would it be considered appropriate to leave this thread's purpose to be more for vocal supporters of Cole, or would it be okay if people come in to discuss the character even if it's because they are not a fan of Cole and find parts of his character problematic and worthy of challenging?

I ask because there was a thread yesterday that I closed, and while some posters agreed that it needed to be closed, they would like to still discuss Cole's nature and whatnot but was concerned it wasn't appropriate to discuss here because they didn't want to come across as buzzkills and out of courtesy felt off entering the thread.

Alternatively we can create a different thread, but I just want to make sure that people feel it would be better that way.

I think all character threads should be open to both praise and criticism, just my opinion.

Cole came across as very similar to Merrill to me when I read Asunder.  While I personally have no desire to romance him I do want to mother him excessively. But considering the appeal of Merrill I can see why many would enjoy the idea of romancing Cole if they enjoy that archetype.

I never read asunder, but I wanna know how the Original cole die?

Did he slowly starve to death because the templars forgot about him? Did he eventually kill himself(slit his wrist?) Did the templars abuse him to the point they accidentally killed him?

I personally don't mind people from both sides discussing stuff here, as long as it stays civil and respectful. But since a lot of fans are congregating here...Maybe I should change this to the fan thread and someone make another for debating? I'm fine with whatever to be honest. (As long as people are being nice!)

That's not an easy question to answer. I mean, considering the little minor flame war we just had... (That I solved for myself by using the handy ignore feature) It might be the best thing, but on the other hand, I don't want to turn away people that just want to discuss the character, regardless of whether they are a fan or not. That person's problem was that they were too aggressive about it, and frequently read too much into other user's replies/attacked their opinions. That's why the fans got angry.

I have no issue with people critiquing his character or challenging the reasons his supporters like him.  I enjoy intelligent, friendly debate, and if this thread was just 'for people who want to give Cole snugglyhugs' I would find it boring.  That said, I don't think anyone here appreciates poeple coming in here and being combative or insulting.  But that's true anywhere on the forums.

So...to people who don't like Cole, post away!  Just please leave out words like emo, gross, and "I want to murder-knife him."  Please  :)

If I recall

He pretty much latches onto anyone who's nice to him and will trust them completely.  If he agrees to sex or a romantic relationship, is he agreeing because he understands what it means and it's what he wants?  Or is he agreeing because he trusts implicitly that you won't hurt him/because he doesn't want you to stop being his friend if he turns you down/because it's what you want and he wants you to be happy?  That's why I find the concept of him as an LI disturbing.  The best i can do is give people who would want to romance him the benefit of the doubt in thinking they might not understand this aspect of his character.

This is the best summing up of the issue I've ever read and matches how I feel about the whole thing pretty much exactly.

I think it's implied starvation. But to be honest I don't remember and am not very sure.

The templars locked him in the dungeon and forgot about him and he spirit stayed with him until his death/ That's all we know. Cole died with no hope, just despair.

I personally like it when there is a difference of opinion as long as it is civil and there is justified reasons for their posts that can create a conversation between people who have good reasons for not liking Cole. I always welcome the idea of being able to have more than one opinion. I do not like it however when it is pretty much "Oh I don't like Cole. Because I don't." because it brings nothing to the table in terms of discussion for the character. The same way I didn't like this thread at one point because it had turned into pretty much "I like Cole, because I find him attractive".

Being able to talk about him in a well rounded way, pointing out the flaws and understanding that each person has their own opinion about the character should be openly welcomed and not quickly turned away. All opinions of a character should be open here in the character discussion thread, because last I checked this wasn't a fan thread but a discussion thread.

If it's going to be mindless bashing and consent posts of 'he's emo' 'he's a bad demon' stuff like that, it isn't constructive or brings anything new to the table.

He looks like the saddest woobie ever. There better be an option to hug him. All the time. Every day.

Seriously, they've said we can finally kiss our LI pretty much whenever, which is great, but if we can't smother Cole in random hugs, I'll be one annoyed sad panda.

Indeed.  Thanks!  If you see this coming up by posters, please file reports and feel free to link this post in the report just so that the mod that happens to see it has some context that I've instructed people to NOT behave this way.

Which if it's not clear, please do not come into the thread simply to give a one off about how Cole is ugly, gross, lame, or some other minimalist contrarian comment as it's not particularly compelling to discussion.

Cheers.

I'm all for fans and non-fans alike coming in to discuss things about Cole (his polarizing nature and all the potential for speculating about and discussing him are among the reasons I like the character so much). Just so long as everyone remains polite and expresses themselves diplomatically :)

Filing reports helps.  There usually isn't toooooooooooooo much delay, but sometimes it's just inconvenient timing and it may last a bit.

Report what has been seen and try to not engage if you feel people are just being antagonistic towards supporters.  It happened once in the Cullen thread and they were pretty bang up on not engaging and just reporting, which kept the off topic stuff to a minimum (making it easier to clean) while not escalating.  And yes, "report and ignore" is valid if it's a huge problem.

Thanks!

It's a forum , I'm not sure people should be unwelcomed in any thread as long as they are polite.

People can create groups if they don't want "outsiders" criticizing their favorite characters.

I'm really...passive and nice and really hate reporting or ignoring people (they could eventually say something that's valuable in some way). But yesterday I did report...sooooo yeah. But now that you've said this I'll be more likely to report if I see things spiraling out of control. I'll still feel a little bit bad about it though.  :pinched:

If they're causing the thread to get derailed into a mess of arguments, then don't feel bad about it. <3

Thank you, Allan!  As long as people are polite and considerate of different opinions I am open to discussing the option to murder-knife Cole, the merits of him being ugly/cute, LI potential, etc etc, all topics are welcome.  (It seems the love interest topic gets the most heated responses from what I've seen here & in other boards.)

If he died due to starvation then hopefully he's got a hunger demon in him (hopefully) it could be that the demon is influenced by coles memories and also hunger demons are one of the least intelligent, so it'll make sense that Coles mind remains intact.

The fact that he originally believes that he's gotta kill so that he can go on "living" is kinda fits the bill of a hunger demon. It just kills with a purpose due to Coles memories.

Lol I guess I just want a demon companion, lol
