Cole came across as very similar to Merrill to me when I read Asunder.  While I personally have no desire to romance him I do want to mother him excessively. But considering the appeal of Merrill I can see why many would enjoy the idea of romancing Cole if they enjoy that archetype.

Merrill came across as someone dealing with culture shock, while Cole's nature as a spirit makes me think it opens up different avenues of exploration in a different plane of existence, especially with the different cultural views on spirits, and the crisis with the Breach likely isn't going to help matters. I'm still wondering how Cole's nature might be addressed for an Inquisitor who may come from a specific culture that has issue with spirits.

@Faerah that makes sense. My hair is pretty shaggy and when I wear hats it pretty much sticks to my face and doesn't really move.

@Tootles FTW it seems like that they slimmed him out a bit in the recent screenshots though

I like the way his hair is....I mean yeah a spirit is not going to know what to do with hair I'm a bit surprised it's not longer.

Anyways I'm thinking about buying Asunder, Cole seems like a very interesting character.  :)

His hair looks like it's never been washed or brushed and he's got a bad case of hat head.  I'm not in love with the texture to be honest - I get what they were going for, but it just looks really flat and not rendered well. Fortunately, I rather like how he looks with that big floppy hat on.  I'll just have to collect big floppy ridiculous hats in the game...

Is it weird that I kind of want to bring him as my date to the masked ball?  Him and Solas.  Cole with a giant hat that keeps hitting people, and Solas in his tight jammies and me in some ridiculous bedazzled gown with an obnoxiously big skirt and a foot-tall wig with a birdcage or something strapped to it.  We'll be a merry band of the fashionably challenged  :)  And we'll play pranks on all the stuffy nobles.

... Do you suppose Vivienne would disapprove?

I think she would, but the looks on those uptight nobles' faces would make the moment priceless, especially with pranking involved.

Anyways though, back on topic.

It's because the table is actually curved dramatically inwards. The perspective is completely thrown off by this because we get a straight on view of the table which makes some along the edges massive while those on the inside seem really bizzarly small. (IE: See Cullen in that same image and compare his massiveness to everyone at the table. He's actually one of the closest to the cameras perspective)

There was a picture that was sent out to the youtubers who got a different perspective of the table which shows it is super curved.

ooh, I didn't know that, thanks!  I'll look it up!

The hair looks poor quality to me, too, but we're still in alpha from what I heard?  Graphical tweaking and refinement could be a beta-stage thing (I am talking out of my butt, but it's a possibility!).  I really like his skin design w/ the visible capillaries.  I didn't expect him to look as ghostly, but I totally dig it.

It's actually quite good.  I wasn't sure I'd like it because I'm a picky reader, but I found it enjoyable, and it gives some insight into the aftermath of DA2 that I think will be good to have going into Inquisition.  The characters are great too - particularly Cole and Rhys.

Edit: this is in response to Roxy's post.  Forgot to hit the 'quote' button  :)

I think the reason his hair is so close to his head (like there's no volume to it) is because it was designed to fit under the hat graphics without clipping through the hat. It does kind of look super weird (like it's drenched and stuck to his skin) but it's also understandable why they chose to make it like that.

If he died due to starvation then hopefully he's got a hunger demon in him (hopefully) it could be that the demon is influenced by coles memories and also hunger demons are one of the least intelligent, so it'll make sense that Coles mind remains intact.

The fact that he originally believes that he's gotta kill so that he can go on "living" is kinda fits the bill of a hunger demon. It just kills with a purpose due to Coles memories.

Lol I guess I just want a demon companion, lol

There is nothing "in him". The original Cole is gone and dead and his body disposed of. Our current Cole is some sort of fade entity that somehow took on a human form(like a shade) and has the original Cole's memories.

If it was the original Cole he would be 12 years old and he's clearly not.

I'm also surprised it's not longer. He has to eat and sleep and he sweats so I'm assuming his body functions like a humans including hair growth. Unless his body only functions in ways he believes humans do, and therefore not everything is humanlike. :?

I refuse to believe he will "die"  :(

Besides.. we can continue to play after the main plot. It wouldn't make sense if he could still be a party member, right?

Spirit can't die. He would only be sent back to the fade.

Question to the thread:

Would it be considered appropriate to leave this thread's purpose to be more for vocal supporters of Cole, or would it be okay if people come in to discuss the character even if it's because they are not a fan of Cole and find parts of his character problematic and worthy of challenging?

I ask because there was a thread yesterday that I closed, and while some posters agreed that it needed to be closed, they would like to still discuss Cole's nature and whatnot but was concerned it wasn't appropriate to discuss here because they didn't want to come across as buzzkills and out of courtesy felt off entering the thread.

Alternatively we can create a different thread, but I just want to make sure that people feel it would be better that way.

I feel it would be better to have that as a separate topic as a form of contingency. Arguments and discussions can be fun but they can also be hated and antagonistic, thus ending with a closed thread. And I don't want to see a good thread go down because it became a war zone.

I've read that the ash wraiths in the temple of sacred ashes were truly the disciples of Andraste.

It was theorized that there's some type of ritual they do. Meditation, fasting plus a black pearl to "keep" their souls and being burned alive. This way they can still exist to protect the urn.

Perhaps Cole is an advanced model of that?

How did they dispose of his body? Did they dump in a lake/bog?

Our Cole isn't the Cole that died in the White Spire. He though he was, by discovered that he wasn't.

It doesn't say how. It says they "erased everything about him to hide their shame". So I guess saying they disposed of his body is pure conjecture but I'm sure they did.

Hm why moderators forbid express negative opinion about character that topic is? Isn't that topic to discuss your feelings about this particular character not just squee that will fill 1000 pages?

If your contribution to the thread is simply "OMG he's ugly" then you're just antagonizing people that are fans.  You're also implicitly suggesting that people that like him have wrong opinions.  It leads me to ask why you are sharing that.

The opposite, however, is that if I say "oh my god he's so interesting" there's little implicit commentary that "people who disagree with me have the wrong opinion."

If you have issues with Cole as you know him, then yes feel free to express it.  It's valid to suggest that he's less worthy of sympathy because of the actions he has taken.

It's very much along the same lines as me having no problems with one poster telling another poster "I think you're great" as opposed to "I think you're an idiot."

I think what it is and what it looks like are far less important than what it has done. Frankly I'm a bit alarmed at how quickly the fact that Cole habitually murdered children for years seems to be getting so easily brushed aside because of how it looks and what it might or might not be.

As for my opinion on negative posts, I think they have a place in the character threads. I am for people being able to express positive or negative view on a character. Just express those views in a respectful way. There have been multiple people that expressed negative views here in a way that fostered actual discussion and that's great. It's when people call others sick or disgusting for liking the character that's the problem, and it would be if people were saying the same about someone not liking the character.

Guys, didn't the mod just say to report and move on when somebody tries to incite arguments/start a flame war?

To be fair, it was a question asked, so I decided to take it as an opportunity to elaborate and I hope that that has been cleared out.

Thanks to people for bringing it to my attention though.

I'll reevaluate if it comes to that.  I do have a preference to keep Cole related discussion together, but if it ends up being an issue I'll go along a different path.

He killed 6 people. He was living in the White Spire for a while and didn't start murdering until contact with Rhys. Therefore it's safe to say he wasn't killing people for "years" in fact it's the opposite. He was living silently alone for years and then suddenly started killing in less time then that.

I don't care that he's a murderer because I role play as a murderer.

i believe they burned it. burying or dumping it in the sea or something isn't truly erasing it. plus don't they often burn their dead in thedas because corpses can be possessed by demons.

also i believe original cole will have died of dehyration not starvation

He's a character who is the spirit of Compassion made to have the player have compassion for him base on his background and looks. It not brushed aside, it just people do not see it as a black and white issue. If think were different with how Cole was developed he would never of killed those people. And he is trying to improve.

Wonder if spirit "Cole" got too close when real "Cole" died , and when the soul of the kid went through the fade , well some connexion happened and maybe Spirit Cole got a piece of the real Cole soul stuck inside of him?

Would explain the trauma , and the fact that he felt like he was pulled into an abyss from time to time.

Souls in DA journey through the fade to an unknown place where they disappear.
