Varric doesn't like Qunari for what the Arishok and his soldiers did to Kirkwall in DA2.
That kinda caught me off guard. I didn't really think Varric would hold such a grudge over that.

I agree. I mean, he doesn't seem to hate either Mages or the Templars despite them also tearing Kirkwall apart three years later.

To be fair, the Qun did kind of try to take over his home city. If memory serves, Varric was born in Kirkwall. I can't blame him for being mistrustful, but if any character would get over it throughout the course of the game, it's Varric.
At this point, we don't know exactly how he feels about templars and mages. He could have gotten over it, he could still be bitter. There is no way to guess that.
I wonder how Varric feels about Cole.
I agree. It makes them feel real to me. That being said, I still would like the option to shout down a companion that p!sses me off. Fenris and Anders being cruel to Merrill really irritated me. I would have liked an option to deck them both.
Well, it sounds like we can get involved in character banter, so here's hoping.

Varric seems the type to reserve judgement on anyone. I'd say at most he might have a "sleep with a knife under your pillow" kind of thing going on. At least until he gets to know Cole.

Considering how amazingly supportive Varric was of Anders, even at that point in Act 3 where he'd pretty definitively succeeded in souring relations and cutting himself off from every single other member of the party...I'm really really hoping Varric approaches Cole (who, on the face of it, is far less of a forceful personality than Anders) as a friend. Really hoping.
I wanted the little rogue trio to be an island of relative non-conflict in the party; since Sera and Cole's relationship is looking to be incredibly rocky, I'm hoping at least this piece of it comes to pass.
(Edit: that said, maybe what Anders went on to do will have made Varric more wary about that sort of thing since and will pre-emptively hurt relations with Cole. Who knows.)
I don't think he hates qunari. I think he might not like what they did in act 2. He certainly don't seem to like much what mages and templars were doing in act 3. He did say he was sick of both.
I don't think he hates them either, but probably doesn't trust one. I also think that his experience with Tallis and her deception might not have helped things either.
I think he'll probably be protective of Cole, although a little wary. To be honest, I think the entire party is going to be a little cautious around Cole, but I'd like to think that Varric and IB are going to be the first to go, "Eh, let the kid come with us. If nothing else, we can keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't get into too much trouble."
Varric nickname for Cole I predicted as "Kid" or "Kiddo." "Ghost Boy" seems too long, and a little too dismissive.
Off topic but I think the events in the comic may have added to Varric's dislike of the Qun.
I think Varric may have initial reservations about Cole depending on how much he (Varric) has changed after DA2 but he always struck me as a stick up for the underdog kind of guy and if there ever was a character to illicit those feelings, I would say it is Cole. Especially if Cole is trying (and learning how) to help others.

Eh Varric was always wary of qunari before the incident, what happen in act 2 whiel it was the qunari at their worst will add up to his already "fear" of them couple this with IB not really being the one to apologize for the qunari and of course they won't get along at first. This could always change, just like Cole and Sera can. Whole some relationships stayed antagonistic in DAo/DA2, some did grow into good friendship(Isabela and Aveline come to mind right away)
It's very possible Sera and Cole could become similar to Tali and Legion. Tali disliked Legion at first and considered him a it, as the games went on though, she started to warm up to him and considered him a friend if you went peace in ME3. We could very well see Sera warm up to Cole ast he game continues or Cole could do something that is against Sera and she'll hate him more. We just don't know and we won't till we play the game. Sera is personally one of the new characters I'm really looking forward to so I might have some hype bias ![]()

I was thinking the exact same thing last night. Shoot, that was one of the best parts of the ME games to me, was seeing Tali accept Legion.
James Arnold Taylor? Don't sell him short. He was the voice of Obi Wan in The Clone Wars; Marty McFly in various games and many others.
For a quick sample:
Spoiler
Oh, I wasn't. I like his voice.

You think Varric might recommend accepting Cole into the Inquisiton (similar to Alistair arguing in Leliana's favor if The Warden didn't initially want her in the group)?
Is it weird that I still love Sera, but I've also been wanting to meet Cole? .

Oh gods...yeah, you have a good point. I think Cole is safe. There is another guy, with a beard, that I think is going to have an end ala Legion.
No? Vast majority of people seem to like both. A handful seem to dislike her now for it but for some reason people are acting like there's far more people that care than there actually are.
Honestly Sera got way more hate for her hair than this.
I know you've been around, but I've seen the Sera thread explode over her not liking Cole. It got really bad, with a lot of deleted posts and just venomous name calling. Thankfully, it's starting to mellow out, but Sera is still getting a lot of hate over not liking Cole. It's only been with the efforts in that thread and in this one to keep the peace where folks are finally having something else to talk about.
I haven't seen much hatred for Sera's hair for a month now. I've seen a lot more hate towards her for being a lesbian, and then her daring not to like Cole. I know that most people like both, but I kept reading the extremes just fighting with each other. I think the next time a fight breaks out, I'll just offer some popcorn and let folks get it out of their systems. I'm sure one of the next reveals is going to send some of the fanbase back into a tizzy, and there will be whole new fights to see.

*sigh* I hope the people that went to the Sera thread weren't any of the regular people here. I would like to think we're better than that.
Anyways, a while ago a few of us were discussing the whole "childish" debate and "alien" came up. That made me think of how Cole was probably the most similar to Legion than most other character comparisons.
If Cole is scripted to die for some reason, I hope it's it's for a valiant reason.
Most Of te arguing over cole was the same people arguing over and over, it still only a handful, and still was way less explosive and numerous than the hair hate she got just after reveal. A small handful, even when where one or two aggressively troll a thread should never be mistaken for a large number. Asking if it's odd you like both is silly, your reaction to them is in fact entirely typical.Oh gods...yeah, you have a good point. I think Cole is safe. I could see that, again basing it off of what we know of him from DA2. The only caveat would be if he blames Anders and only Anders or if he takes an 'all spirits are bad news' approach. I think of how he treated Merrill (looking after her from behind the scenes) and she too, had the powerful (blood magic!) but naive and (not helpless per-say) out of her element. He protected Anders as well and adored Bethany. So yeah, Cole seems to fit the type that would trigger that protective streak in Varric. Even if it was to tweak Cassandra's nose!

He was also nice to Fenris too. Actually come to think of it, were Sebastian and Carver the only companions that he didn't like?
Sera's mistrust of Cole is understandable I hope she can grow from it during the playthru I romance her. As for Varric, he has a softspot for innocents and innocence, I can see him coming up with an affectionate nickname for Cole such as he did for Bthany and Merrill.
I think he liked Carver. He just didn't sugar coat that he was a ******He was also nice to Fenris too. Actually come to think of it, were Sebastian and Carver the only companions that he didn't like?

Varric was pretty much a sweetheart to everybody except Sebastian. Even his relationship with Carver felt more like familiar teasing than actual dislike.

Yeah, agreed. If you take Carver with you for Legacy, Varric (and the other party members) comment that Carver has finally grown up some. It's been awhile, but I think Varric says something to Carver along the lines of, "I knew you always had it in you."
