I didn't mention Solas because I didn't really know much about him. /shrug

All I know is he looks pretty interesting to me, there are tons of ways this characters arc could go and that is more then I expect for some of the other characters who look primed to be martyr material. I also like that many of the characters look to be type A personalities who work together out of desperation and not choice, so I see tons of conflict with Cole because of his actions in Asunder (if its referenced at all in Inquisition).

Pentaghast, Blackwall, and Ironbull will probably not be cool with his presence considering he pretty much is a fade entity in human form. I still predict that he will become a very valuable companion when it comes to entering the fade, maybe when you enter you will see the "real" cole and you get more background on his origins or different gameplay options with him.

Apparently he and IB get on okay, so that's good news for me.

Well we know just as little of a few of those other characters as we do of Solas.....*shrug*

And let me help you,he is a Mage and a fade expert he is described by Mary Kirby of Scotch Bonnet candies (Candied peppers). I think just by him being a fade expert you can kinda tell what type of relationship that Solas and Cole might have.

Anyways back on Cole, I read on the twitter thread last night that if we make good decisions we can see Cole smile or laugh...which is great cause I want to see him smile the poor thing.  :(

I want to point out that they didn't say that good decision will trigger a smile, just that based on the decisions we make he might smile. Maybe if we make evil choices he'll smile...before stabbing us to death  .

@PatrickWeekes I have a not-so-spoiler question from the Cole thread on the forums (Faerah, hi =D) will we see Cole smile? maybe even laugh?

@Thrissir That depends on your choices. :)

Really? :P  ....Well I just hope he does smile or laugh and not at something bad then that will creep me out lol

IB is said to get along with the kid and want to corrupt him to booze and bad women. Should make for interesting banter.

Blackwall is all about helping the helpless and a Warden (the end justify the means). Maybe he think of Cole has a it, but doesn't fear what he is.

Cassandra could go in a lots of different direction. Cole pretty much validate the Pentaghast's beliefs on death and they have no issues with building nice tombs and keeping corpse in working conditions for such entities. At the same time, she is an Andrastian and she might share Vivienne's "we should banish it" point-of-view. Finally, as a Seeker, she might be curious of what he is.

COLE: [SMILING] I wanted to thank you.
INQUISITOR: For what?
COLE: For bringing me along last time. I had... no idea. That it could be like that.
INQUISITOR: Oh, you mean that thing with the elves? [SMIRKS] It's power. Goes to your head. Stick with me, and you can see so much more of it.
COLE: No, not the power. The misery.
INQUISITOR: [FROWNS]
COLE: Before... before they died... they were so scared, and sad, and hopeless...
INQUISITOR: Hey now. Don't get all creepy on me.
COLE: [IGNORES THE INQUISITOR] Everyone is miserable now. And it's... it's everywhere... [FIXES EYES ON THE INQUISITOR] Except where you go.
INQUISITOR: [SLOWLY STEPS BACK] Cole...
COLE: You bring hope, Inquisitor. [SHAKES HIS HEAD] Sadness and then hope. I can't take that. I can't take that.
INQUISITOR: [DRAWS SWORD] Get back, demon!
COLE: [VANISHES]
INQUISITOR: [SPINS] Where? Where? Maker damn you where did you go?!
COLE: I'm here.

I can imagine this.

Inquisitor: That orphanage is riddled with plague. If it spreads it will consume the entire town. There is a cure but, acquiring it will take us far off of our course. Why don't you go in there and help those children along, Cole.

Then I shall never see him smile :(

Maybe I could make him smile by handing him crates of vegetables and telling him to go hide them in Viviennes bed or something...

Cole has more innocent blood on its hands than not. Lambert is the only righteous kill, that comes to mind and even that one is a bit grey. I understood you think Cole might be gratified by killing someone that deserves it. However, the information we have on it just doesn't support that assumption.

You honestly think I was serious ?
And no, we have information that he wants to protect innocents, and that he might go against PC who commit evil acts in the interview. The fact that you believe he's lying doesn't prove that info to be necessary false.

I finished Asunder. Great book. It's very twisted. Cole is a badass character. I flippin LOVE him. He's some kind of apparition Fade creature that stabs folks to death - how much more awesome can he get? He reminds me of a vampire without the whole vampire cliche attached. Not sure what Gaider meant by the "mentality of a child" tweet - seems like he tweeted that using the wrong words and people completely took it the wrong way, thinking Cole is some little Lord Fauntleroy, bouncing around with a lollipop. Not so. He's like an alien. A monster. A creature. A thing. Something that doesn't understand human nature, except for the thoughts and emotions he learned through the real Cole. He emulates the real Cole, it seems. The overall story feels like Ju-on, aka The Grudge. And Cole is some kind of Mephistopheles character, which isn't surprising since Gaider seems to love Faustian themes. (Fenris was Faust, himself.) Patrick Weekes said that Cole has since grown post-Asunder, which is awesome. That means the character likely has grown to understand human nature beyond the stunted understanding of his initial contact (the real Cole). Sounds super cool, and that's reassuring. I don't think Cole will be a love interest, but he has definitely caught my eye, as well as the eyes of others. Some other bookworms and those who take Gaider's tweet much too literally will jump/attack/flame anyone who finds the character intriguing. Different strokes. Name calling doesn't make any sense to me (i.e. necrophiliac, pedophile). Weird. Also this character isn't a corpse, just an apparition. So I think necrophiliac isn't right. Is there a word for folks who are in love with ghosts/spirits? What's the word for Demi Moore's character from "Ghost"? Patrickswayziac? Kidding. Dirty Dance-o-phile? Ok. I'll stop. Asunder is a great read. I tried reading The Masked Empire which bored me to tears. Couldn't get through it. (No offense Patrick!) To be honest, though I'm super stoked Weekes is writing Cole for DAI. I hope to see Cole's dark side throughout the game. I need some dark and creepy stuff in Dragon Age. I also need drama-llamas in my party, otherwise gameplay is a snooze.

Somehow I doubt that Cole ever was a demon. He (I will continue to refer to Cole as "he" because 1. he's now been living in a male body for some time, 2. I don't feel comfortable saying "it", and since "she" is not fitting at all ... well. And 3.: All devs have used "he" so far. But I understand that some people want to put emphasis on him being a fade creature and that's fine for me, too.) just never displayed what I have previously seen in demons ... they want to intensify the emotion they are embodying. They never wanted to ease them. If Cole was a true despair demon I would think he would want to make people suffer more, drive them further into their misery. One could of course argue that he kind of did that before killing the mages in there cells - but he also ended their despair by doing so. I would think a demon would keep them alive longer, driving them deeper and deeper into their despair until they would have killed themselves or something like that. And since he stopped doing those killings ... he never wanted anyone to suffer either. He even wants to use his "sixth sense" to help people. Why would a demon who lives on negative emotions want people to feel better?

I think Cole truly is some, well, middle ground between a spirit, a demon, and also a human. As a spirit he doesn't understand many things and used to be very confused in Asunder, maybe he wasn't too far from becoming a demon (as in "a spirit completely corrupted by negative emotions"), but he also understands human nature much better than, say, Justice did. He has a real chance to become a well adjusted fade creature who can do good in the living world. My interpretation may of course be off, but that's what I will keep believing until I have played DA:I. :)

Gaider posted recently that what he meant by it was that Cole in Asunder is incapable of consent. I wish he hadn't said mentality of a child because now some people think he is an actual literal child and treat him like a child that needs to be babysat, and also cause it's a really ableist notion.

Also I really loved both Asunder and Masked Empire, although I did mostly just really love Briala. I thought Patrick did a great job so I'm very interested to see what he does with Cole.

I personally hope he's a demon but I agree that he seems to be some sort of in-the-middle spirit, one we haven't encountered yet.

Maybe it would play out like with Lambert and you'll have the original spirit persona that showed up in that scene perform the stabbing! He will climb into the room you're sleeping in it, smile and say "look into my eyes", and then a black screen that says "Bad End", visual novel-style. And then Game Over.

...That would actually be really cool, the more I think on it, but unlikely. Plus it will be a bummer if you have to go all the way back and replay the entire game to avoid dying! Unless they'd program it in a way that you could avoid it if you make certain choices.

Bioware has done a similar scenario before, so something happening where Cole kills you and ends in a fail state/game over(restart from a save, not entire playthrough deletion) is possible. It was a part of Mass Effect 2

Spoiler

Edit: But with Cole I'd bet it'd be because you're playing a not-very-nice Inquisitor or threaten to kill him or some such.

I almost feel like it'd be weird if  2/3 mages are ok with Cole. I almost want one to be indifferent, or almost mad scientist with Cole. Like they don't actually care about Cole, they only want to unravel the mystery. I think that'd be a lot more interesting in party dynamics/banter.

I hope he gets along with him, I feel like it could go either way. On one hand, he hates the Tevinter Imperium... so it's a possibility he is against demons/spirits. But it's also possible he's much more open minded about it and doesn't fear them like most people do. I'm quite interested to see how they will interact! :D
