I plan on having both Sera and Cole. If that's what that was, I doubt it'd be anything other than an ability.

Can't we just make Cole an archer if we want?

 

Plus then I can headcanon varric trying to teach him to shoot, Cole accidently shooting someone elses belongings, then when that person comes to complain Cole vanishes leaving just Varric holding a bow.

Hey Dragon Age fandom! At SDCC I got to talk to Patrick Weekes a little bit about Cole, so I thought I’d share what he told me. SPOILERS FOR COLE’S CODEX ENTRY.

- Cole’s Codex entry is just the letter Evangeline wrote to herself to make sure she doesn’t forget him. Simple, but effective cuz it made me sad.

- When writing him, Weekes said he had the same ten Sarah McLachlan songs on repeat. You know the depressing commercials about animal abuse with the sad puppies? Yeah, those.

Nothing particularly ground breaking, but I found it interesting and I hadn’t seen anything about it. Who’s ready to be depressed by Cole in Inquisition?

I've had the notion in my head that Cole's story will turn out to be a Thane-esque, unavoidable tragedy in the end and this is not helping.

I really hope there were some cheery songs in that playlist. I want there to be more to Cole's story than constant tragedy.

I'm hoping against hope that part of Cole's personal quest has you meeting up with the characters from Asunder. Because hugs would ensue, and Cole needs a lifetime's worth of hugs.

 

Assuming he still has something in common with the Cole from Asunder, of course, considering how that book ends up.

I would expect there to be at least a line or two to explain context, because if I were to just read this as-is in the game about a character I didn't know I'd probably be "Huh?  What?  Is this supposed to be a letter my Quizzie wrote?".  

 

I also hope we run into Evangeline & Rhys, though I wonder if Cole would choose to stay with them upon the reunion.  Could be a Zevran-type encounter where he stays if his loyalty isn't high enough.  (~end fan speculation~)

I've been thinking something like Cole's quest is finding Rhys. And as you do you run into Asunder characters. For example:

 

You start with the mages since he would be with his fellows

they point you to Fiona since she is their leader so would know

Fiona points you to Evangeline since they were recently on a mission together

Evangeline points you to his last known location, maybe even accompanies as an NPC

I'm sure the codex entry will mention that the note was written by Evangeline, or at the very least say something like 'a note, written on a carefully folded and oft-handled scrap of paper.' Or, something to that affect (like the Enigma of Kirkwall notes). I think it's perfect, even if you haven't read the book - poignant, even if the specific events it refers to are a mystery.

I'll have to see how skillful the developers are at introducing Cole.  I'll have to mightly struggle with avoiding my knowledge of him from Asunder.
