I didn't like Cole much in Asunder. I felt sorry for him, but I just couldn't like him, with all that serial killing he did. And I was super wary when he was announced as a companion--I was afraid he'd be Anders crossed with Fenris. Unlikeable, whiny, and angsty.
But now, after reading the interview with his writer, I have to say I'm much more fond of him now. That line about how it doesn't matter that people won't remember him helping, just that he did help, particularly struck a chord in me--it's very mature. It's so nice to see how he's grown up, and I'm looking forward to him joining my party now. He sort of makes me think of Angel from Angel crossed with Merrill.
And that hat is simultaneously hideous and cute :3
With the whole serial killer thing... He started off seemingly ruthless until it's explained how he sought out people who wanted to die anyway, and he still talked to them first to make sure. The first victim I believe knew she wanted to die, but it was left unexplored as we didn't know that much about Cole yet. I think the idea was Cole could feel that it was the right choice and she put up no resistance.
The girl at Adamant Tower didn't want to die despite what she'd been through so he let her go after asking.
As for Pharamond, Cole learned from Rhys that all this killing wasn't the right thing to do because of the accusations flying around. So he left him too despite Pharamond's protests.
As you stated, Cole's character is meant to focus on him helping people. This power of 'seeking out' people in pain is just a part of that.
S*** I'm really bad at explaining things, but that was meant to be for the benefit of anyone who's concerned with Cole's killings. In case anyone gets the wrong idea, I'm certainly not excusing the killings or trying to explain them away, I just want to offer my interpretation of them.
