I was just discussing Cole's appearance (veiny pale skin) with a friend.

Does it have anything to do with the taint? Why can he hear the old god's song? I can't make the link here. What do you think?

He might have just been hearing the Lyrium you realize?

 

Darkspawn taint acts in place of magic which enables them to connect to the fade without prexisting mana.

 

So my theory is that; Spirits cannot sense the "taint" but knock off lyrium.

 

Same thing in practice though i guess.

Maybe it has something to do with the taint, or he is a "living" corpse. Veins get pretty visible when a body is slightly decomposing, at least that is what I learned.

Not sure though, not drawing any conclusions for now. (about what he is I mean)

The taint! finally someone brought it up, cuz whenever i come up with a plausible theory, i will look back and search the evidence that might contradict to it, and the taint is always that evidence gets in my way. From what I know, taint and spirit are completely different notions. Abomination can be tainted but spirit can’t and darkspawn afraid of demons.

 

I also don’t think it’s Lyrium song, it’s Old God's song for sure:

So I guess he is a new type of abomination tainted in the process of possession or an unknown fade being ancient enough to be tainted. In addition to it, here is the conversation between Solas & Cole, notice the phrases I’ve pointed out：

As for those veins on Cole's face, since they've never been described in Asunder, so here is my guess:

Or it’s probably just Facial Spider Symptoms, - high amounts of sun exposure can lead to the development of facial spider veins, especially if you have a fair complexion. Cole spent at least 8 years in white spire dungeons and suddenly exposed too much to the sun. It's reasonable.

 

And that can also explain why he was standing in Western Desolation and why he has that ridiculous hat.

Hm, your post makes a lot of sense, Dust. But I've got a couple of questions:

 

1. why is he standing in western desolation? :S
2. how do you know he spent 8 years in the Spire? (I don't remember that part of the book)

About the facial spider thing, he does look different in some screenshots, less "sick". But maybe because it's a different shot, we'll see. 

 

Ah wait, 12+8=18. Maybe he was dragged there at the age of 12 (which is the average age at which magical skill shows up in kids) and now he is around 18-20 years.

Yes, you've got it right. The book said the tragedy happened when he was 12-13, since I don’t believe a helpless 12 year old child can escape templars for 8 years long, especially after the event happened in his family. And it clearly described that he was wondering in white spire for years and he understands every paths and corners. The life in white spire had stronger impact on him than the years on the run, so I guess there was no run at all. It also proves that he can age, which is a good thing.

 

This is a reasonable deduction for now. However I still managed to find an adverse description. It seems like Cole can enter the fade without a ritual, usually abomination can’t do that except using some extremely powerful blood magic. But who knows, maybe he just accidentally fallen into a rift. There was the battle field of the second blight, the massive slaughter could have opened the veil.

 

EDIT:

If it is Facial Spider Symptom, then it's a tricky one, not easy to be cured. But maybe he doesn’t care how he looks and neither do I.

His transformation in DA:I combined with his dark background and mysterious fade nature makes him amazing character. He is only one who won't leave my party thru almost all first playthrough.

Didn't someone say that Cole favors swift execution over imprisonment because of his experiences? I'm curious if I'll lose approval with him in the Skyhold scenes because I dont plan on executing anyone but I'm definitely not going to  let everyone go free if there's an option to jail them.

I just read the blurb on Cole's artbook page:

Finally, an explanation for the weird hat-helmet! He saw other people wearing hats and helmets and tried to copy them...but didn't get it quite right.
