Cole will always be a hybrid, something we haven't seen before. It's only a matter of degree. But Cole also isn't the boy in the cupboard, either- to intensify the illusion that he is, also has uncomfortable implications. But I think it's supposed to be uncomfortable no matter which way you go.

Great character, great quest.

Who doesn't want a powerful Spirit friend, like a guardian angle, who can only been seen by you and be understand by you?

Not me. ;) I certainly don't want to keep him all to myself. Ideally, I want Cole to exist in a world that doesn't fear him, that doesn't only accept him if he becomes so much more human that most couldn't even tell he is part spirit. I'd like a Thedas in which more people know of and interact with spirits peacefully, without immediately screaming "DEMON!". I love how most of the other companions befriend him as well, not just the Inquisitor -- Solas and Varric, of course, but also Dorian and Cassandra. The same Cassandra who nearly skewered him when he appeared on the war table after the templar recruitment mission! Interacting with Cole and Solas makes Cassandra consider entirely new questions about the world, including how wars in the mortal world negatively impact spirits. That's pretty damn amazing in my book. Even the Iron Bull kinda likes Cole and expresses concern for him when he panics after the party falls into the Fade.

Edit: And Blackwall slowly overcomes his fear and suspicions as well. The conversations between more-a-spirit Cole and post-Revelations Blackwall are some of the most touching in the game.

Seeing all these people's tender, thoughtful and funny banters with Cole made me feel incredibly happy for him and for them, because he can be such a joy to have around. He deserves to have friends. And if these friends can learn -- through him and from him -- to be a little more open-minded about spirits, all the better.

Cole will always be a hybrid, something we haven't seen before. It's only a matter of degree.

Agreed.

But I think it's supposed to be uncomfortable no matter which way you go.

And agreed again. Cole does not walk an easy path, and I think there's discomfort and sadness in both outcomes as well as happiness and warm fuzzies ... and that is good. It's part of what makes him so damned compelling.

I agree again, but I believe the only way to make that happen is he is brave enough to walk among them, let them remember him so they all can have a chance to know how unique and how wonderful he is. He is still who he is, and always, the precious fade friend to me and to everyone.

Spoiler

Also for those who appear to hate him really didn't try too much on actually make senseXD.

IB likes Cole a lot, even if IB doesn't understand him.

"You may be a creepy kid, but you're my creepy kid."

Also, Bull trying to get Cole laid ranks among the funniest banter series in the game.

What I found interesting is that pre-release many here on the forums said they didn't like Cole. Now if you look at the polls he's usually high rated, and Sera seems to be the universal "unfavorite."

Kind of like what happens to him in-game. Even Cassandra opens up to him. The only ones who antagonize him are Sera and Vivienne. It's funny, I thought more characters would complain about him.

He creeps Blackwall out, though.

Unsurprisingly, yes. But even Blackwall relaxes just a bit once he realizes that Cole can't or won't spill the big secret.

Blackwall: Hey, Cole. Say something interesting.

Cole: "Something interesting"?

Blackwall: Yes, I deserved that one.

:P

And afterwards, I think Cole is a pretty big factor in Blackwall possibly allowing himself to start healing. Probably in smoothing the anger among the group, too.

Question, does anyone know if Corypheus succeeds in binding Cole in the final mission if you don't complete his personal quest?

Cole is really squishy.

Cole kept dying so easily for so long my first run I had no idea why- then I realized I forgot to give him the rogue passives that keep them from getting hit.

Sorry Cole.

I crafted 3 masterwork equipments for Cole and successfully turned him into an invincible tank in nightmare, kinda fulfilled his wish to be one though.

If you want to keep him around in hight difficulties and hate him dying all the time, here is how it works:

Attacking frequency is the key to trigger some awesome life-saving masterwork effects, and daggers are known for that. So I go with three master-materials to create such synergy like KE, attack harder and you will be safer.

1. Fade-Touched Plush Fustian Velvet (Red Templar in Emprise Du Lion.)

10% chance to use Hidden Blades on a hit, with 5 added hits. (Boost your Hit chance)

2. Fade-Touched Everite (Emprise Du Lion &  behind Emerald Graves’ dragon )

10% chance to grant 5 seconds of Walking Fortress (The key to save his life)

3. Fade-Touched Volcanic Aurum (Hissing waste)/Fade-Touched Silverite (Emprise Du Lion)

10% chance to use Unbowed on a hit / On hit: gain 5 guard (His guard breaks in 3 hits, just for the insurance and buy you some time to react.)

With these 3 masterworks, hidden blade, throwing blades and it beats walking, Lv.18 Cole is in the walking fortress 40%-50% of the time, the rest of the battle he is either in stealth or in guard or in a barrier, he is almost impossible to died, no exaggeration really.

BTW, I don’t know if it happens to everyone, but lots of people talking about how deadly he is. In same level, same equipments with same skill points, rogue inquisitor's critical chance and crit damage are 17% and 85% compare to Cole’s 30%+ and 140%+.

He can read and write, yes, as well as feel pain imprinted on objects. When you do the two war table missions involving Rhys and Evangeline, he'll add a little note at the end of both reports.

To counter his squishiness, I made him an archer. Felt really bad about it since it's so out of character, but I absolutely hate melee DPS in this game. The combat is far too clunky and unresponsive, and as a result pretty much any hostile encounter feels like an annoying interruption. Dust's setup looks interesting, though, if one gets lucky with the fade-touched stuff in the late game. I still kind of want to see late-game dagger-Cole in action sometime. What abilities did you put points into beside the three you mentioned?

I just took Cole out after one of my missions. I even gave him the special cut rings.

I know he's a sweet rogue, but....perhaps I gotta get him better gear? I'm only Lv. 12.... so my stuff isn't that nice.

I'll never ever make him swap hats. Gave him an elf cowl once.........................never again.

I really wish it was possible to toggle headgear display on an individual basis. Cole and Vivienne need their trademark hats, but all the other headgear looks so bad that I just can't tolerate it. The only other option is to turn headgear on but not let anyone but these two wear any.

Cole is really squishy.

Get the ability which causes reset on stealth when he kills and make stealth a preferred ability. Also make parry a preferred ability. Get the skill that reduces his threat as well. Unless you are playing on nightmare, you are set.

What abilities did you put points into beside the three you mentioned?

Well, Hidden (6 hit)/ Spinning (5 hit)/ Throwing blades (4 hit). High chance to trigger walking fortress.

For fluent movement and stamina restoration:

Hook and tackle + It beats walking

Looked like it hurt + Knife in the shadows + Dance of death.

Also the purple CD amulet (Found in Emerald Grave) is pretty helpful as well.

Dubble daggers attack supper fast, and they can equip 3 masterwork. With proper effect synergy it almost works like bugged (or maybe they are just designed for them). So much worth for your fade-touched materials. There are some youtube videos show you how to quickly get Fade-Touched Silverite and there is a post called "I found Everite thread." I'm on my cellphone now, you can google them, they are pretty helpful. Also Volcanic Aurum scattered everywhere around tombs.

Fade-Touched Plush Fustian Velvet can be replaced by Fade-Touched Ring Velvet, I'm pretty sure I get that at L.15 in Exalted Plants.

My way of keeping Cole alive in Nightmare was crafting daggers that gave Guard with hit. That also made him my best dpser!

Hm. Thanks. I guess part of the problem for me is that I dislike gear-reliant gameplay as a rule. Even the characters I use a lot are lucky if their junk gets upgraded every five levels or so. :P Still, I might give it a whirl just to see the little spirit buddy fight as he should.

Hello, fellow Cole fans. I've just encountered a problem and I hoped that maybe some of you might know what to do with it. Thing is, I don't get that option to invite Cole to Val Royeaux after completing his personal quest. On my previous playthroughs it had been there immediately, though one time it did disappear when I tried to postpone it until I finish "Wicked Eyes...". Now... it doesn't appear at all. I chose to make Cole more human, though it's hardly the matter. Is it an approval depending option, or am I missing something?

Good question. Approval-depending would make sense since it's basically a bonding moment with a friend. Did you do anything to mess up his approval after the big boost you get from his quest?

@Dust: Cute GIF, by the way. Yay for badass Cassandra. ;)

No, I didn't. In fact, the decisions I made during this playtrough were almost identical to the ones I had made the last time, when I didn't have any trouble with geting this scene. I even took Cole out to make some refugges in the Hinterlands happy and boost his approval - still nothing.

However, I just remembered I haven't finish the second operation on the war table that involves Rhys. So I went to the table and completed it. Dunno how this is connected, but... worked like a charm. Now I'm wondering whether this option is bound to the operation, ot perhaps I just gained enough approval by finishing it  :)

Good to know it worked out! That little outing is one of my favourite scenes in the game, regardless of what you choose in Cole's quest. It's great to see him relaxed and happy after all the stress.
