Cole is great with Dorian, too, yes. His "Oh, good!" after Dorian offers to answer questions is so unusually cheerful, and Dorian's reply of "I'm ... going to regret this, aren't I?" made me laugh.

I'm generally happy that most of the NPCs I like at least make an effort to get along with each other and learn about each other, because disruptive and self-centered jerks ****** me off like nobody's business.

G-guys....

I wanna ask for your permission to write a fic and draw comics about a girl who fell in love with a spirit. It's smut-free because I like to stay in character.

Can I?

I don't know why I'm asking this.

I would read it. I don't think you should need permission from others to do it either :) It is completely plausible, especially for someone who loves a person for their soul not appearance or physical form.

I wonder what's the fascination of Cole taking an appearance of a human? We've seen plenty of demons take the form of people all the time. The only thing I can think of is that as a spirit he'll be cooperative as opposed to a demon tricking you

If you make him more human he thanks you in the end for helping him to learn, grow, and forgive. A lot better IMO than keeping him a spirit where he ends up mind-wiping himself and speaking in a robotic tone. The Inquisitor even backs away slowly afterwards.

I strongly disagree, but we've been over this in the past few pages. :P

Both paths are poignant and credible, sad and hopeful, but when push comes to shove I prefer the more-spirit one.

Because he is a lot different than a typical demon. He is special.

Cole should have been a romance option.  That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

Yeah, curse my human feelings. Maybe it is true we cannot truly know why him remaining a spirit and helping that way is more important, but him making himself forget because the memory is too painful to him says something imo. The cutscene after you choose the spirit path, Varric's wistful "He could have been more human"  gets to me. Also people never know who helps them so he gets no credit. It shouldn't bother me but it does, no one knows how extraordinary he is. Soooo... human it is. Plus, I'm a sucker for Pinocchio stories. :P

Took Cole and Vivienne out together, and I gotta say, I didn't expect their conversations to be so interesting. They started with Cole happily chatting about nugs, to which Vivienne replied: "Remember, Inquisitor, most dangerous are always also most harmless looking". Then Cole proceeded to promise Vivienne that if any templars come for her, he'll kill them and protect her, no worries  I didn't know whether to laugh or to shake my head. I should really use them together more often.

Also people never know who helps them so he gets no credit. It shouldn't bother me but it does, no one knows how extraordinary he is.

This, and I also agree with him saying that if people know there is someone trying to help them, someone who cares, they feel better already.

Cole's actually the only source that can help us to understand what Viv truly is. Well, not only her, but you know.

Certainly seems so. I half expected most of their banters to go like "Vivienne... - Shut up, demon!" and nothing more, but it appears that she does reply to him most of the time. She even called him "my dear" once, much to my surprise.

What prompted me to let him become more human was the scene where he wanted to kill the guy who left the real Cole to die. I was worried that by letting him kill that guy he'd be consumed by negative emotions and, I don't know turn full demon or something. I thought it was dangerous for his well being.

I ended up liking Cole, when I never thought I would. Picking the Templar side played a huge part in that. His intro and how he guides the Inquisitor who would be completely lost in Envy's trap without his help made it impossible for me to hate Cole. He saves the Inquisitors life.

I've got to say that I honestly thought I would hate Cole. I absolutely didn't trust him in Asunder, and I could not wait to see if I could murder knife him in Inquisition.

I cannot believe how much my mind has changed. I LOVE Cole <3. He is one of my favorite companions in this game. He is so much fun to bring along, and his conversations are so awesome.

This is my first post in thread, but I just had to come in here and give my support.

That's nice of you ^_^ I'm asking because... well English isn't my 1st language, and I happen to suck at writing fics so if I screwed it up, I'll feel like I'm not doing Cole justice to his character.

And because Cole is his fan's baby <3 so I have to ask permission to further appreciate him in the form of comics and fanfics!

Yes, I think people who wave his help off as superfluous ignore that the ease with which we go through Envy's trap is just game mechanics and game restrictions. As much as I like to think that my Inquisitor has impressive willpower, as well as enough basic templar training to immediately realize what's going on, she's still out of her depth -- and since I doubt Corypheus would have left subverting the templars to just any old demon, this embodiment of Envy must be very good at what it does. Alone, we'd have been lost sooner or later, and nobody else could have helped us. Envy itself credits "that thing" with "keeping you whole", and gets so delightfully frustrated and angry about it, too. :P

Have you read Asunder? It would help you understand his back story more. If you are interested, I could help you with simple editing. Don't worry so much about English not being your primary language. :) Personally, when I write, I write for myself. You don't have to please others if it makes you happy.

No matter how Viv was mean to him, in Cole's eyes, she is still just the little girl who was afraid of cold and hunger.

Cole is the one who humanizes Vivienne, ironically. And I love that he deflects all of her daggers so perfectly.

The penny kind of dropped that if Cole turned, he'd be a Despair demon. That's his greatest fear. Reading the codex on despair demons makes me wibble. Cole really is the opposite, though. He reinforces people's sense of self, by chipping at their masks.

"Once upon a time, we classified these as demons of sloth, but we learned that despair demons are something quite different. They are not the antithesis of justice or valor, but rather hope. They form nightmares tearing away the foundations of self and purpose. When brought into the world, they are most attracted to places the downtrodden populate: alienages, slums, prisons, and the like. The miasma they spread can lead to extreme behavior. We look for a rash of unexplained suicides, men and women so filled with grief they lash out. The most intelligent of these creatures are to be feared, for they not only feed on despair, they understand its causes...and seek to bring it about. From the shadows they ruin lives, drinking the tears of those who have no idea the cause of their misery is not random chance.”

Isn't Despair the opposite end of Hope, though? From what Cole says in the Fade I got the impression that he'd turn Nightmare if he ever became a demon. Btw, taking Cole there was the first time I actually cared about the stuff Nightmare said. Sure, he has something mean in store for every companion, but the way he talked to Cole was just... ugh.

@GreenClover: Yeah, and the way Cole freaks out about it afterwards is just heart-rending. The voice actor absolutely nails it.

As I said in another thread, I don't think the issue of which spirit corresponds to which demon is always that clear-cut, but heavily dependant on circumstances. If a spirit isn't self-aware, being forcefully pulled through the veil turns it into what "batters it, bruises its being". For self-aware spirits like our dear friend here, I think it comes down to how their purpose is perverted. Addai rightly points out that his greatest fear is despair, so painfully demonstrated in that post-Adamant conversation as well as, in my interpretation, in how he reacted to the real Cole's death. When confronting his "killer", though, he almost breaks himself into rage, not despair -- and damn if that wasn't scary, to hear him fall not only into the anguished and burning kind of rage, but even further into the cold, hard kind that has no room for any other emotion.
