Okay, I've got a question, and since google has failed me, I figured maybe the Cole thread was a better place to ask. :P

I'm trying to get 'bread crumbs on the battlements' to trigger... So far, all I've heard is that you can't get this piece of dialogue AFTER completing Cole's personal quest (I'm assuming it's the 'Subjected to His Will' one and not the war table option with Evangeline and Rhys) and that the first trigger occurs in the kitchens (one of the staff mentions something about someone stealing bread and crumbs showing up on the battlements.)

I've STARTED Cole's personal quest, but have not given him the amulet yet, so it's still incomplete... yet the dialogue isn't triggering.  I've tried leaving and re-entering Skyhold several times, nada.

So, my question is, have I already ruined my chances of getting this dialogue by STARTING his quest, or do I just need to continue leaving and re-entering Skyhold?  If the latter, is the trigger for this dialogue ACTUALLY in the kitchens, or am I looking in the wrong place?

THANKS! D:

On one of my games, I could never get the breadcrumb quest to trigger, even though I kept going back to the kitchen. The kitchen is where it triggers...there will be a guy walking back and forth, waving his arms, and he will be talking to a guy that has always been smashed into the wall with the door that goes out...the guy will be between two barrels. The guy talking will be clipping through the table, so I don't know where he's supposed to be walking when not clipping.

To get this dialogue to trigger, once I talked to Cole at Skyhold, I kept going around Skyhold and also leaving and coming back to Skyhold, doing very little else in between my trips to and fro. It seems much harder to get all the dialogue, if I just go about playing the game and progressing it, as I normally would do.

So my answer: the trigger is in the kitchen and the dialogue is between two men

I don't know if it's too late for you to trigger it now...it just seems to be very hard to trigger overall.

I got it to trigger for the first time after patch 1.04. I just got to Skyhold and was running around talking to everybody (after the Cass, Viv and Solas scene about Cole). I got the cheese and mint scene in the kitchens then I fast-traveled out of Skyhold, came back and went to the kitchens again and it triggered.

I read that at some point the "odd things" ambient dialogs just don't trigger anymore, maybe it's when Skyhold is at the final stage? If so, that's rather regrettable. Has anyone heard any of these banters with a fully-upgraded Skyhold?

How many "odd things" does he have? Because I've only done just four of them. The cheese and mint, daggers, spider webs, and smell.

Those four, plus the apparently hardest-to-trigger one with the bread on the battlements.

It's those and the bread on the battlements.

Is there a possibility that Cole would be the person that becomes a companion in DA:4? There has always been a person that shows up as a companion in the next game. He still wants to help people by the end of the game, and I know that Tevinter has lots of problems.

The only problem I see with this is that Cole has one of the biggest change in the game, which is the choice between spirit and full human. I'm curious to see how the full human Cole is going to act in the future.

I got rid of it and then felt quite guilty for it when I really started loving the little guy and using him pretty much all the time. In my next game, I'm definitely 1) keeping that hat and 2) turning on headgear just so Cole looks "right". Since every other headgear except for Vivienne's sweet "dragon horns" looks like absolute crap, everyone else will just have to do without. :P

I admit I'd hate the thought of losing Cole as my Inquisitor's friend. A continuing problem of mine with Bioware games is how utterly meaningless platonic bonds are to the writers ... as soon as the credits roll, everyone but the "LI" usually can't wait to drop the protagonist like a hot potato and scatter to the four winds. (The cynic in me says they do it partly so the popular NPCs are free to appear in franchise fiction instead of being weighed down by a now-worthless ex-protagonist.) Since I'm an asexual for whom the friendships with my favourite NPCs are the biggest appeal, that always really hurts because the writers essentially tell me that nobody actually gives a f*ck about my character. Sure, the companions can't all stick around, some have pressing issues elsewhere, but at last some should make a home with us. Cole -- be it more-spirit or more-human -- is a good candidate for that IMO, he's finally found a true friend and a place where he's not treated like a freak or a monster, and there'll never be a shortage of work for the Inquisitor and thus for him.

(Maybe I should give the ME series another chance, since a recurring protagonist actually means their friendships are allowed to endure for once. It didn't really do anything for me back when I tried ME1, but it has that going for it.)

Cole's divergent development is an interesting thought. I think at the core, both "versions" of him are still the same person, like the proverbial two sides of the same coin. Still, I wonder how far his first-hand understanding of human nature, as well as his own human needs, would continue to grow. He still says he doesn't eat when you take him to Val Royeaux, and there's a banter with Blackwall which has him sounding distinctly unenthusiastic about the matter, but that might change.

Yea I understand. I just want for once to be able to play the same protagonist in Dragon Age, and I feel that they Inquisitor could be that protagonist. I think they did good with Varric, since it seemed like he couldn't even become friends with the Inquisitor like he did with Hawke, and plus the banter he has with Dorian about Hawke. I really enjoyed Cole's friendship a lot more than most of the other relationships, because I actually felt growth and connection between Protagonist and Npc. I may sound crazy, but Cole was actually more than just a game character for me, he was about building, learning, and growth despite your past problems, which is why I favored the human side more.  So I'm with you that he should stay with the Inquisitor, because he/she actually treated him better than Rhys or anyone that he came in contact with. Cole needs a stable place to grow, and I can't wait to see him in action in the DLCs.

The spirit Cole seems to forget the real Cole, but I can't really talk on the spirit behalf, since I haven't done that one or plan on doing that one. I think he only says he doesn't eat because he still getting use to actually being a human, and doesn't really think he needs to eat, but when everything starts to kick in, I bet he will eat then. I think the Inquisitor and Varric are going to help him grow as a real human.

On a related note, if you don't bring more-spirit Cole to the final battle, the conversation with him at the victory party apparently includes a dialog choice which results in him making a joke. I nearly fell out of my chair! Varric would burst with pride if he heard that, given all his attempts to teach Cole about humor. It's touching and fitting that when he finally shows a glimpse of it, despite being so much less human himself, it's through his compassion that he realizes humor can be helpful, too.

I was completely taken by surprise by that joke! I guess it goes to show that regardless of whether he's more human or spirit, he's learning about human behaviour. ^_^

Yep, Varric would definitely be pleased!

Yea I understand. I just want for once to be able to play the same protagonist in Dragon Age, and I feel that they Inquisitor could be that protagonist.

Likewise. I was happily "over and done" with Origins as the credits rolled, in no small part because my canon is the ultimate sacrifice -- you don't get a more definite conclusion to a story than that. :P But the Inquisition feels like it still has so many loose ends, so much potential, not to mention so much long-reaching influence, that it feels wrong to write it off already ...

It's not crazy at all. I think Cole is a rare character who can "speak" to different people in different but deep ways ... which is really appropriate given who and what he is. He's my new #1 Bioware character of all time, followed by Cassandra. I've mentioned before what really appeals to me and why I prefer the spirit path (the whole "different does not mean inferior/bad/evil" angle as well as the fascinating challenge of accepting, understanding and embracing such a unique and pure soul), and the beautiful thing is that there is room for different views and ways to connect with him, due to the diverging choices on his quest as well as the depth he has.

And yikes, that is one sad picture. :(

Yep, Varric would definitely be pleased!

His chuckle as he explains it sounds almost self-conscious, but I bet a positive reaction would draw a shy but pleased little smile from him. I really wish we could react to it -- my Inquisitor would definitely stare a moment, then laugh and clap him on the shoulder in delight.

Which brings me to a question I'm trying to figure out. How do folks here see Cole in terms of platonical physical affection or support, both offering and accepting? He's not human, and even humans view these gestures in vastly different ways, and as someone who doesn't read people well at all (and definitely sits closer to the no-touch end of the spectrum), it has me rather stumped. There's that first desperate act of comfort, holding the dying real Cole's hand, and Solas puts a hand on his back/shoulder at the conclusion of that scene with the templar. Not much to go by, but then barely anyone ever touches anyone else outside of "romance scenes" because it's so hard to pose and animate. I'd imagine he'd still hold the hands of the dying (knife in his other hand if he mercy-kills them ...) or delirious if he feels it'd help, but aside from that?

I haven't read Asunder, but given how much he changed since then, that might not be too helpful trying to figure out how he'd react now, either? And of course the baseline-Cole, the more-human-Cole and the more-spirit-Cole might all have different reactions, too.

I haven't done this US, because it's hard for me to get rid of characters that "belongs" to me, and that I've spend so much time with. I just don't see the warden as someone to continue the franchise with, since the wardens are only suppose to deal with blights and darkspawns. So that's my reason why he shouldn't continue as the protagonist, but I was totally ok if they continued the series with Hawke. I would had love to see Hawke and their brother/sister grow from DA:2 to Inquisition. I like the inquisitor, and he may just be my favorite protagonist in the series, but I feel sometimes he/she's too powerful, and anyone who crosses them will not be so lucky.

Let's hope for some interesting DLC for Inquisition. On to Cole now.

It's just sad that some people write him off so quickly because they find him "weird," or have this view that all spirits are demons. Cole just wants to help everyone out, which is all he knows until being exposed to the Inquisition. I feel that as a human, he has more room to finally grow. The way you put the spirit path makes me kind of curious.

Basically, I just really want people to be able to remember Cole after he has helped them.
