But this could be taken as a prime opportunity to better understand the overall nature of the Fade itself, what it is and what sort of creatures inhabit it.  That they take on such mirrors of our own emotions and experiences is worth noting, mind you.  If we're to take our own emotional experiences and judge them as "good" and "bad" and seek to destroy them out of hand, what does it say about how we view ourselves and each other?  Although that waxes dangerously philosophical, too, doesn't it?

I only think Cole is going to be a purely fascinating edition to our game experience.  And I am desperately looking forward to "meeting" him, hehe.

I was fairly certain Cole was designed to be a companion pretty early on. That might have even been before the leaked survey. When we learned that the Veil was tearing in this game I immediately thought that Cole would be perfect to fill the role of the Fade connection. He might not even be able to tell us that much since he might be on a sort of self discovery arc during the game. But I'm almost 100% sure that through him learning things about himself we will understand the Fade better. This simple fact made it pretty concrete in my head that he was going to be included.

See this is why we cannot have nice things, if people do not stop drawing and making Cole so goddamn bloody attractive than I will not blame my hormonal mind. Cause, damn. Damn.

I know right?

And on the subject of appearance, after lots of observation (aka staring), even though they made him nice and tall and less weedy.. I'm finding his model increasingly attractive. I like my big boys. (read into that what you will, terrible people!)

I'm a huge fan of Cole and was the second I met him in Asunder. It's strange to see he's such a polarizing character because he seems so innocent and alone in the novel... and for some reason I didn't get "childlike" from him, more along the lines of just innocent and alone. And since his physical age was late teens, early 20s, I was pretty excited about the possibility of him appearing in DA:I and being a LI... especially after that final chapter, when he seems to abruptly mature to a more "appropriate" mental age. But DG laying the hammer down on a romance possibility, and solidifying that he does, in fact, have the mind of a child (even more reason for me to feel very protective and loving towards him) pretty much kills that chance.

Personally I don't really like his look in the Last Supper screen shot; he's so huge and hulking, he gives me this "Lenny" vibe, which is disturbing. The fanart of him is much cuter!

I'm also seeing a lot of hate for other characters in this thread, which makes me extremely sad. I'm a massive Cullen fan, and RE: the discussion a few pages back, the obvious reason for why Cullen has more fans is because he's been in two games and has had the chance to develop and display nuances of character. They do share one thing in common though: they have a lot of haters. People mostly hate Cole because they're "creeped out" by him, whereas people usually hate Cullen on account of his fans. Cullen fans tend to be all mashed together into one squeeing hormonal 12 year old fangirl, which is obviously not accurate (although there are many, many fans like that, unfortunately).

As to other characters, Fenris is my favorite DA character period, and I also love Anders and Isabela. I never really got why people would dislike some of the best and most lovingly written characters in the franchise. Ah well.

Like all of this.

Cole is extremely misunderstood. He is known and disliked by many for being a murderer because it was pretty much the first thing we witnessed from him.. and it continued multiple times and became what defined him as a character to many (forgetting his loyalty and his growth in both morality and as a human). However other characters who committed atrocities in their past are forgivable because they all had "reasons", and we got to know them and their story before finding out their dark secrets - we didn't get that opportunity with Cole. Our first impressions were almost forced onto us.. "murderer?".

As for his physical appearance.. while reading Asunder, I definitely saw a scrawny, skinny more unattractive young man in my head.. but I honestly quite love his appearance in the war room shot. In fact, the more I see his model.. the more I like it.

Regarding romance.. I'd love nothing more than a sweet, platonic romance. Nothing more than hands brushing as we walk past and he freezes on the spot, all rosy-cheeked and taken aback. A warm hand on his cheek to show there's something more than just friendship and it's ok to trust and open up. And the "climax" of the romance, if you will, just an unsure but comforting kiss on the lips, or cheek even. That sounds absolutely beautiful to me (:

And finally, I lurk the Cullen thread on a daily basis and can honestly say it's the most cheerful, inviting thread on this scary forum, where I've noticed all opinions and views are appreciated and respected. I think that kind of outbalances the 12 year old Cullen fangirl misconception :P

Wow I wrote a lot. And it took me a while. I'm tired.

I completely agree with Artemis, too.  Up to and including that Fenris is an awesome companion character.  I think there's a complexity to the characters that quite often catches me by surprise, and I loved seeing Fenris grow through the progression of the game.  It wasn't quite so fun to watch Anders deteriorate, and I ended up stabbing him at the end.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Cole's development, especially considering his initial character development proved fascinating in Asunder.  I'm eager to get to know him better.  Not sure I can ever see him even as a platonic romance companion.  A good friend, perhaps.  Maybe.  We'll have to wait and see what they make of his character, I suppose.

Cole looks way too big and massive in the trailer. It clashes with his persona based on Asunder, unless that is what they are going for.

IMO he should have an elf body model. Small and thin.

I love this :) I'd also be completely okay with this. Although I don't mind love scenes either.

If DG says Cole has the mind of a child, then so mote it be, and obviously I don't think anyone here is into gettin' it on with little kids  LOL I guess I just wish my initial impressions of him after reading the novel were true: that he was just a confused young man (not child), whether fully human or fully spirit or something in between. I think if that had been true, then a romance with this character would have been really and truly sweet.

It's funny, I initially posted in this thread because I saw a wee bit of Cullen hate in the thread. Tonight I head over to my usual haunt in the Cullen thread and spy a wee bit of Cole hate. Can't we all just get along?

Oh, and I agree with this, too. I'm hoping his model just wasn't finished, and they just plunked a shaggy blonde hair cut on a generic human male model. If Iron Bull and cearly the Warden can get unique models, then Cole should get one, too.

also: big cole model in the trailer reminds me of kristoff from frozen

also mk 2: lol there was no cullen hate, people were just discussing reasons why some people may like or dislike him. that isn't character hate

i wish to set cullen on fire....  good theres the hate for the day...

cole is supposed to be tall, the book even describes him that way...  the only reason people think hes small is because the way his character is written...  he is a meek childlike individual in a giants body

I agree with that, because Cole was very 'small' in how he acted, it's quickly defaulted to a smaller thinner characters design. It's a trope. For all we know, Cole ate like a king in the circle and because he could just go and get it any time and probably didn't lack food until that trip out of the tower.

He actually isn't all that much larger then the other human males shown at the table, his only bulkyness look stems from the fact that Bioware human males are beefy cakes no matter what. He's taller then Dorian because unlike Dorian, Cole is actually standing very straight backed and seems to have a surprisingly good posture going on, then after having stared at the companions set up for a longer time...

The perspective is really freaking weird with some characters. It seems like the more center you go, the farther away the characters are which actually makes sense to why that would be. All the characters in the center are farther away from the viewer, making them seem smaller while the corner ones are the closest because of the pull out the camera does. It's very hard to gage everyones actual line up height when there is an actual curve inwards to the Inquisitor.

There's dry spells here and there. I'm sure E3 will reinvigorate us...or hopefully at least. I'm hoping Cole might show up in a trailer or screen shots or...anything really.

Yeah, romance for me in a bioware game has never been something I've devoted a lot of thought/time to. So my default position is "disinterested benevolence", basically let other people romance all the things! But the place I draw the line is Hawkecest and cole. Seriously, the first one is against every societal norm(inb4 Deep South), and the second one....is like takin advantage of a child.....like a retarded child(some sort of cognitive problem). I mean, sure lobby for your LI all you want, but you folks still kinda creep me out. If cole ends up being a full-on spirit or something else then that's fine, but as for current state cole(the way he is in book and described by gaider on his blog) you're giving me the bad kind of shivers.

To be fair, those of us who wish for a platonic romance have all clearly stated we did not perceive him as a child. Had I perceived him in such a way, romance would not cross my mind. We shall see how he acts in DAI. If he acts like a child, I will eat my hat and feel a little wrong. But until then, my opinions remain.

I don't find anything wrong with that, how you perceive him I mean. It's just all the descriptions we've been given contradict that....so yeah.
Platonic relationship sounds good to me....like baby steps training wheels etc for human contact. But the people who want to "teach cole how to love ;)" and etc.....feels
Like my mind has been bad touched.
