Couple things:
Gaider isn't the decision maker on it.
Gaider posted that he got overruled on something not too long after that thread and wasn't pleased about it.
The higher ups know there is a pretty decent demand for a Cole romance.
Now that's hardly confirming that there IS one, but those who say the answer is a definitive no don't have the evidence/authority to make such a statement. It's still a mystery/up in the air.

You're trying to hard to make it so. Gaider isn't the final arbitter, but as Lead Writer he has more say than anyone bar Project Lead (and potentially upper management, who are far more oblivious about these forums than you seem to think. Those kinds of people aren't often just browsing through the forums, they're counting money or in important meetings). If he says there isn't a Cole Romance (he actually said that he thought a Cole romance would be inappropriate) then its a pretty safe bet. I doubt he'd get overruled on details like this, its more likely if he is going to be overruled its going to be more on a general plot, large story arc type stuff.
As far as I'm concerned Gaiders 'no' is as good a no as we are going to get.
Edit: Also a big demand for a Cole romance? I've seen a few people suggest it, many more suggesting a platonic story arc, and even more berating everyone (wrongly in my opinion but w/e) so I don't think there is quite the demand for it you imagine either.

Admittedly I'm more than a little baised, considering I'm one of those doing the "berating", but I'd like to think that the opposition to a Cole romance has been, for the most part, fairly reasonable.
Least when you consider that, were Cole a female character with the mind of a child, anyone calling for that romance would be chased off these forums by an angry mob.

Right? Remember all the complaints about Merrill because she was shorter and skinnier than most women in there 30s (despite everyone knowing she's an elf)?Admittedly I'm more than a little baised, considering I'm one of those doing the "berating", but I'd like to think that the opposition to a Cole romance has been, for the most part, fairly reasonable.

I gave up hope as soon as Gaider mentioned that Cole would still have the mentality of a child. As long as that's still the case, there's virtually no chance of him being romanceable (and for good reason). Don't expect anything because you're almost certainly going to get your hopes crushed.
It's pretty cruel that they made him so attractive though. I bet they'll give him a sexy Orlesian accent as well. ![]()

Oh my.. did you see the vid posted a good few pages back? Someone suggested it would be a fitting voice for him.. erm Gaspard Ulliel I think. I'll just post it here in case you're interested
Before I saw that vid, I was all "pfft, Cole with an Orlesian accent. BLEGH!" - then I watched it and sank into my chair like *sigh* "ok.. maybe it wouldn't be so bad

I do think they could (and would) force the issue because Cole's character concept is a handsome blonde young man who needs your love to heal his tortured soul. He's a perfect BioWare romance plot, and his character design is conventionally attractive.
That being said, I would not underestimate Gaider's clout among the rest of the team. He's the Lead Writer for a reason.

I think if they did make him a romance, it'll end up being a "very bad idea" a la Morinth from Mass Effect, my other guesses are it'll be a "first teenage crush"/sexless romance. Like that scene from some parody movie where the couple goes in to kiss and it takes like five minutes for them to actually meet lips. LOL

That's actually something we never met in bioware romances before, will be most interesting to see how they can handle that kind of romance!

This is the only way I'd see Cole's romance working in any way (IF it was in the game - which is highly unlikely). But the problem would be that the Inquisitor still is an adult at least in their mid-20's, and Cole has the mentality of child, not even a teenager. He doesn't even understand the concept of sex. The romance would be really hard to pull off without making the Inquisitor look like a predator.
So, sorry, I'm in the "berating" camp right now.

I don't think of what I did as berating....I think of it as perfectly justified rants at creepy people. Because honestly....wat?Admittedly I'm more than a little baised, considering I'm one of those doing the "berating", but I'd like to think that the opposition to a Cole romance has been, for the most part, fairly reasonable.

(Having said that, some "chaste romance" requests and "baby's training wheels for human interaction" requests were fairly reasonable and not creepy)

I don't think a creative director or producer could (or would) strong-arm Gaider into making Cole a romance based on "fan demand."

Two things to point out:
1) I'm not the sole arbiter of who is romanced, it's very true. The leads on the project, however, are well aware that there's some demand to romance anyone. If they overruled me based purely on the fact that some folks might want to have a romance with a particular character, we'd have to romance everyone.
2) Before someone goes on at length about how "conventionally attractive" the character they're referring to as "Cole" is, they might want to wait until they actually get a closer look. As a suggestion.

I don't really have a stake in the romance discussion(not a part of bioware games I'm invested in) but will we be getting this "closer look" at E3?

You'll have to watch the E3 coverage and see, I suppose. There's nothing I can reveal about it beforehand.

Fair point. We've only seen one image of the guy, and it was most definitely not an up close shot.

Yeah, that just reminds me of all the backlash because of people thinking BroShep "fixed" Jack in ME2 by sexing her up. I don't necessarily agree with that argument, but imagining a similar plot line regarding Cole is.... not pleasant.

Personally I've always thought the guy in the trailer/last supper image everyone's pointed to as being Cole(who probably is but as Mr. Gaider pointed out, we don't "know" that yet) looks rather dopey.
Just my two cents.

I'm interested in how the team chooses romanceable characters! I can only assume the character's appearance has something to do with it.1) I'm not the sole arbiter of who is romanced, it's very true. The leads on the project, however, are well aware that there's some demand to romance anyone. If they overruled me based purely on the fact that some folks might want to have a romance with a particular character, we'd have to romance everyone.
I remember reading/watching dev talk about The Old Republic, where a character designer lamented that they were told to change a character's broken nose because the character was a love interest and had to look "pretty."
I hope we get a closer look at E32) Before someone goes on at length about how "conventionally attractive" the character they're referring to as "Cole" is, they might want to wait until they actually get a closer look. As a suggestion.
