I'm 21 and Cole looks older than me, honestly. lol
I don't really feel a parental sort of feeling towards him. I think we'll be like best friends.

Yeah, I agree. I'm just saying that not everyone will see it as him refraining from killing innocents, depending on what people consider "innocent." Some will see them as deserving of death just on account of them being templars. Whilst others will see it as people just doing their jobs, they weren't an immediate threat to Rhys and so they didn't deserve to die. Cole could have just knocked them out or something.
Just knocking them out would have left a margin for error for the templars to arm the traps and set off the alarm, something they couldn't afford. Also, if you recall, in that scene, Leilana was just as ready to kill the templars standing guard, and she's essentially the "left-hand" of Divine.
I'm not saying you don't have a point, but you need to remember that in this particular instance at least he's no worse than any number of former companions in the DA series.
Ughh I have no likes, and there's so many things to like!
And hehe.. the thread title
but since Cole is physically around my age, early 20s, I feel no mothering instinct towards him whatsoever. The only mothering instinct I have so far is towards my cat and pet ratties! So I'll stick with being friends. Sorry Cole, I'm not ready to mother you. Not yet!
It still feels so surreal. We've had absolutely nothing. Then out of the blue, we get Cole. And I can quite honestly say I'm not disappointed. His appearance fits his character perfectly. Now I just can't wait for the Q&A up on the site (:
I'm 24 and I want to Big Sister the hell out of him, which I imagine is pretty much the same feeling everybody who's saying they want to mother him is talking about. That said, I'm a big sister IRL and would never dream of acting so ridiculously towards my IRL adult, perfectly-capable-of-looking-after-himself little brother. Feelings about characters are wierd.
On another note, I've noticed that a lot of people seem to think the original Cole "died" when he was still 12, but we really don't know if that's the case. The nightmare / memory of the real Cole that we see in Asunder when they're all in the fade didn't show him being brought to the circle. For all we know the original Cole could have survived on his own for a few years and grew into a young adult before the templars finally caught him.
afragmentcastadriftCole. And his hat.
I figure that maybe the hat exists somewhat on the material plane, and therefore makes a perfect perch for the resident nug companion. Which would mean that the Inquisitor and company could keep tabs on where Cole was standing. Or they would be terrified over the floating nug. (Schmooples ascending to god-level!)
The first is adorable, and the second made me laugh so hard. ![]()
I should elaborate: we'll be comrades in arms, carving a path through all the baddies, but back at the base camp I'll be like

I had the servants get you a better bed because you look like you need to sleep for approximately 10,000 years

I don't know what that'd make me, friend/sister/mother?
If the body of the original Cole is still actually around (assuming the Templars dumped it in the Pit instead of burning it) I assume that the spirit resurrected Cole (like Wynne) instead of the spirit possessing the corpse itself since the whole weird aging thing. Except maybe the spirit is more prominent in the abomination than the human now. Almost like if Justice took over Anders all/most of the time or something. This is just one of my theories though. I've thought up a bunch of stuff that might be what's going on trying to figure out what Cole is.
I'm actually more inclined to believe this theory myself. After what the original Cole went through, it wouldn't be such a stretch to believe that he was so emotionally and mentally broken that the Fade Spirit was essentially forced to become the dominant personality.

Yeah, exactly this. If the original body and...spirit(?) of Cole is still around, I think he's sitting back seat and maybe prefers it that way. As confusing as reality is to spirits, a spirit might still be more capable of handling...everything better than the original Cole.
So many people dwelling over the possibility of Rhys/Evangeline being offed in the first five minutes of the game, but I'm still over here doing a jig because COOOOOOOLE.

His bio sounds way more optimistic than I expected, too. I figured they would paint him more as a dubious character that the Quizzie/player would feel out as the plot progressed, but maybe they assumed most people would insta-kill him a la Zevran so they leaned more towards "hey, he's a good guy" straight from the gate?
Eugh, sorry Cole fans, but his hair looks horrible in game.
Kind of a disapointment.

I'm 22 (I have to keep reminding myself of this, my birthday was a bit of a non-event this year
) and whilst I wouldn't necessarily refer to it as a mothering instinct I do get a strong vibe that he needs an anchor and someone to give him some time, compassion and a haircut
maybe I could consider it more of a big-sister thing. But then again I'm perfectly happy taking care of people my own age and older if they look like they need some help. As long as they look like they're trying to help themselves, anyway, incapable people who won't try to help themselves make me want to run away ![]()

I'm pretty sure it's intended to be that way. I think the unhealthy look is there to remind you of just how uncared-for he is and just how on-the-edge-of-but-not-quite-human he is.

I don't want them to die. I just what to lock them up in my keep to stop them from getting killed. Please, don't kill off the only two book characters I like.

This is just my opinion (given the title change), but I think the mothering/fathering aspect folks have toward Cole misrepresents what this character really is. It's a spirit that is dangerous and powerful - and awesome. It's not a child. It's not even human.
Strange how there is a divide between those fans who either want to kill Cole or breastfeed him.
(But considering him as an LI would be "ludicrous!" lol. Ok...)

I'm not sure if this has been shared yet or not, as it seems to actually be kinda old based on the time stamp, but I I stumbled upon it and it made me giggle :3
Art done by the lovely Aimo
Cole is actually technically slightly older than me and I'm still getting maternal over him. idk I think he is very cute and I found his childlikeness and his narration voice in Asunder incredibly endearing, as his strange innocence and childlike wonder, but he's also an abused child who never had any friends, love or affection and kindness in his life for a very long time and who's grasping at straws and desperate to feel like he exists or is alive and... is overall in a really, really bad situation in every possible way. It's not hard to see why one would want to wrap him in a blanket and smother him with affection, is it? That so many people are getting maternal might have to do with his very bad family situation combined with the childlike mindset, but I admit that I find it extremely fascinating how common this reaction is and how so many of us share this exact feeling.
In previous games our characters have nearly always been on the receiving end of the surrogate parent relationship (Wynne, Aveline) so it would be very fun to do the reverse for once and be the surrogate parent to one of our companions instead. That's one reason I would really like the option to have this sort of relationship with Cole in the game. Besides, the boy deserves some paternal/familial affection after all he's been through and how much he lacked it in his life, and it would be very cute and sweet.

The whole mothering/fathering thing is a little bit of a playful exaggeration. He may not be a child, but as I've mentioned before, he has the emotional maturity of one. Or at least he does at the beginning of the book. Put simply he doesn't really understand people or how to interact with them, making him socially and emotionally vulnerable, which can draw out some people's protective and nurturing side. That doesn't mean any of the fans who feel that way have forgotten that he's dangerous in his own right, though.
Breastfeeding is kind of really too strong of a description of mothering. When we're talking about mothering we mean giving him guidance, helping him learn to be human, being a mentally stable anchor for him to lean on, maybe also give him cookies.
Im so excited that he has been confirmed! I have heard so much about him!
I just want to hold him and make him feel loved. (not in a romantic way)
but.....he reminds me...at least kind of in looks....haha and i guess "spirit" kind of way of Tate from American Horror story.
Agree, looks like a bleached mullet
Ah, hyperbole....or breastfeed him.
Naturally. I would imagine that 'maternal instinct' and 'romantic attraction' are rather exclusive to one another,...(But considering him as an LI would be "ludicrous!" lol. Ok...)

Like.
I would fasten his cute little open buckles on his coat. (awwwwwwwwh just look at them
!!). I'd definitely change him out of those little shoes.. yuck. I'd hug him if he ever got sad -- which would mean a lot of hugs. I'd protect him, definitely. But I refuse to bathe him. Too motherly for me. I wouldn't know where to look.
If the guy wants to stink, fine by me! ![]()
I'll be his guardian. And his best friend. That's what I'm going with. ![]()
Has this thread talked about specializations? Do you think he'll have one of the 3 rogue ones? I'm guessing either Assasin or Tempest, but does it really make sense for those to be available to the Inqusitior as well?
In the demo we saw the IB having Reaver, so it appears we're sharing specializations with our companions, but does it make sense for Cole?
