I like Cole even moar after the interview !  :D

I have no problems with him being written by Patrick Weekes. Masked Empire was fantastic and he will do a good job with this character.

To those who dislike Cole for being a demon, let me quote Paarthurnax from Skyrim :- "What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort ?"

To me that line resonates with the idea of Cole as a character and a follower in DA:I. From what Patrick says, Cole is genuinely seem to be trying to improve himself, to get better and most importantly, he cares.

That is enough for me. He will be one the followers I pick a lot for missions.

As for Sera and Vivienne, let's just say my liking for them dropped significantly after the interview. Refusing to speak to "it" ? Just banish it ? I can understand not wanting to be friends with Cole but downright refusal and banishment? What did he ever do to them in the first place ?

Expect Sera and Vivienne to stay cooped up in Skyhold for most of my playthrough.

I hope Cassandra and Scribe girl are more open minded.

Iron Bull's view of him is hilarious though ! I can totally see him hiring hookers for Cole

I don't think shock value for the sake of "What a twist!" equals good writing necessarily, and unless Bioware is being intentionally disingenuous with Cole's site bio I don't think they're lying when they say that Cole is at the least trying to be a good person.

Cole is DAI's Legion, methinks.

Yep, agree with this.

I don't think building a companion up as a trustworthy character only to have them betray you is really Bioware's style. Personal disagreements and conflicts over viewpoints are certainly there, but you can see them coming. If you have to dismiss or even fight a companion, it's generally because you've forced that situation through some sort of decision - not because they suddenly flipped into evil mode.

The bait-and-switch approach of getting you to like someone before they stab you in the back seems a little mean for the writers, especially when the point of the Inquisition is unity, trust and teamwork. I think Cole is exactly what he is presented to be.

(That's not to say unexpected betrayal has no place in videogames - look at the first episode of the second season of The Walking Dead game for a brilliantly shocking example - but I don't think Bioware's companion narratives are really the right place.)

My guesses for people's views on Cole:

Cullen: Will hate him due to his experience with demons in Kinloch Hold

Vivienne: Wants to banish him

Varric: Won't really have any opinion on him

Solas: As a Fade expert, will be intrigued

Cassandra: Conflicted between Chantry and Nevarran beliefs on the subject

Iron Bull: Sees him as a kid who just needs to get drunk and laid

Dorian: More accepting than most due to Tevinter's stance on Fade beings

Leliana: Accepting due to time together in Asunder

Sera: Refuses to acknowledge or speak with him

Scribbles: I see a mother/son relationship due to that one concept art

Blackwall: Will respect his views about helping those in need

The first episode? Not the second?

And while it's fine for what it is, I wouldn't exactly call it "brilliantly shocking".

From the angle of his shoulder, you can tell Cole has his arm around like a hug. And Scribbles' face is one of surprise, as in she wasn't expecting the hug. We discussed it in the Cole and Scribbles thread a bit and those involved came to the conclusion that Scribbles may be one of the people Cole bonds to.

So I wanted to draw something Cole-related but sadly I lack the skills and the materials to do so.
It didn't stop me though.

Is there a bigger image of this?  That doesn't look like a hug to me.  It looks like the blonde hair is from someone standing behind her, not from someone with their head on her shoulder.

They had the Emissary (sorry, I think that was his name?) & Architect in DAA that humanized, in a way, the Darkspawn (it gave them a point of view, anyways, beyond "Blarglegaaaar!!!! /stab /smash"), and in the same game you had a voice for Fade Spirits (Justice, obviously) that made them seem like real people beyond mere representations of an emotion or ideal.

We have yet to really get anything from a demon beyond evil, though, and I think Cole is the perfect opportunity to blur the line.  Same with the introduction of Dorian, actually - gasp! A NICE Tevinter magister?!

EDIT - @Former_Fiend - Cole wouldn't exactly be a "shark" in the way you describe since he's essentially a shark wearing a shark costume underneath a neon signing saying "SHARK".  It would be boring if he acted like a damn shark, ya know?

The shark isn't Cole. The shark is the plot.

Worked better with the trap metaphor, I suppose.

I think they've set up a great "The farmer and the viper" story here, with us as the farmer. Or to put it another way; We're Frodo, Sera's Sam, and Cole's Gollum/Smeagol.

No, sorry. This is the biggest version I've found.

And I can see where you think that, but remember the red is one of Cole's outfits and it is front of Scribbles, her chin resting on his shoulder pretty much.

I don't think Sera "hates him" I think Sera's a relatively uneducated commoner who's only knowledge of demons and spirits is what she's gained from cultural osmosis (which really doesn't paint those things in the best of light). She doesn't understand him and is therefore afraid of him, and reacts to him in the manner that many people do when the things they fear don't go away, by ignoring him.

IB on the other hand is a Qunari, and as we've seen from Sten, sometimes being a Qunari means ignoring what others might see as undeniable facts if they don't mesh with one's world view. To Iron Bull demons and spirits aren't scared scrawny little kids, so Cole must therefore not be a demon/spirit.

Ah, okay, I see.

I'm not arguing for the sake of arguing your opinion, btw.  I think Cole could be a very compelling character if he's honestly struggling with his inner nature and - dependent upon our actions - he can overcome it or succumb to it.  BUT if it's an inevitable villainous ruse from the get go?  Boring and expected.  It's like pegging the Russian as the spy from the out-set, and what do you know?  The Russian ends up being the spy.

I'm not necessarily saying it would be a knowing ruse from the start. Like I said, I wouldn't expect him to grow a mustache and start twirling it evily after he's stabbed us in the back.

Ya know, I didn't even recognize his little red pattern thingy.  Without real signature outfits a la DA2 its hard to say one way or the other - but its certainly something to ponder over.

EDIT - Ooookay, never mind, DG has spoken (and laughed) I retract all ponderances.

But if it's right after an almost identicle one (anders) and would get the exact same result i you uses any other character a bait it's not a great trap. It just.....seems like you are just going"this character has fans, the fans would be sad if he betrayed them, don't you see this is brilliant writing and somehow unique to cole!"

Like maybe the scenario you are imagining is somehow a brilliant masterpiece but th scenario you are actually describing just sound like dumb shock for the sake of shock. The scenario in your head is not coming across in your posts.

Cole, though 'childish', doesn't seem like the huggy huggy type...

edit: PLEASE stop quoting this post!!! I stand corrected. I didn't read any of the books. I was just making a superficial observation.

One of the running sub-themes in Asunder is how no one - not the mages, certainly not the Chantry, really understand the nature of spirits, demons, magic, or the Fade itself.  I think this is going to be explored a lot in Inquisition (at least I hope so), and I think Cole could give us some really interesting insight into that. Personally, I'm excited to meet him in the game and have him in my party. And PW's interview makes me think I'll like The Bull that much more.

I don't know whether Cole is a spirit or demon, and honestly I don't really care.  The fact that he's trying to be good says more for him than many of the not-demon characters we've met in the Dragon Age games.  And the theory that a demon could become a spirit just as the opposite is true, or that a demon could actually want to be benevolent, is an interesting one.  And it seems a common thread in the characters we've met so far is of people not fitting into the roles you'd expect - the fun-loving Qunari, the honorable Tevinter magister, the pro-circle mage, the hard-ass seeker-warrior who is questioning her world view, etc. etc.

As far as trusting him goes - I can see the parallels between Cole and Legion, where he may well betray you if he feels you're out to hurt him or those he wants to protect.  But I also think he would incredibly loyal to someone he believes is a friend.
