Actually , in Asunder there are quite a few scenes where Rhys hugs him (and vice versa), and there's that moment at camp when he brushes back Cole's hair while he's sleeping.

Okay, I haven't read Asunder in a year or more, but didn't he sob in Rhys's arms on more than one occasion? And Cassandra Evangeline hugged him and he kinda melted (as in, he enjoyed the contact)? He actually seems quite touchy-feely to me, he's just scared of being rebuffed.

But if it's right after an almost identicle one (anders) and would get the exact same result i you uses any other character a bait it's not a great trap. It just.....seems like you are just going"this character has fans, the fans would be sad if he betrayed them, don't you see this is brilliant writing and somehow unique to cole!"
Like maybe the scenario you are imagining is somehow a brilliant masterpiece but th scenario you are actually describing just sound like dumb shock for the sake of shock. The scenario in your head is not coming across in your posts.
I don't think it would work for any character. Iron Bull and Vivienne would be the other two party members I'd peg as being good fodder for this sort of thing because the ground work of them doing it is there, where you can look back on the moment and say "Yea, that made complete sense."
That's the clincher for me; if it would make complete sense in retrospect, which a Cole betrayal would.
You do have a point about this coming off the heels of the Anders scenario, though.

From that concept art, I'd guess he's more the stabbity stab kill kill type...maybe it's a little of both?
I almost love that Cole isn't written by David, purely because of how "obvious" it was to most people. I'm sure Patrick will do wonderful job with Cole, I'm really looking forward to seeing where he takes the character. I hope he can fill a role in my party combat-wise, because I'd very much like to bring him around as much the other characters will allow (Dorian, Solas, Sera, IB - there are too many characters I want to have in my party!).

I think it is a branch, if we are super mean to Cole he goes crazy and murders/attacks a companion (not scribbles 
!!!!!) or if we encourage his good side this scene doesn't occur.
