Glad to hear Admiral Kohoku had such good taste in RPGs before Cerberus tracked him down.

Quite a few actually. You know, western RPGs aren't the only RPGs on the market. Expecially on portable consoles, there was a whole slew.

Well, if you are reffering to JRPG's.... then no. They don't count.

Actually, given their popularity, they often tend to count more than western RPGs. There's a certain JRPG that's going to completely strangle awakenings in March, I'm afraid (bad, bad choice of a release window).

Why don't they count? Thats exactly like saying WRPGs don't count when it comes to the RPG genre.

I heard even O'Reilly likes Dragon Age. He took a few minutes out of hating Obama to talk about how much he's been enjoying this game, despite it's several references to communism.

Most JRPGs are barely RPGs at all, they tend to be bring battle simulators wrapped in a whackey story that you slog through. Most lack the "RP" in "RPG"

By lacking "RP", what are these games missing?

Ok, I'll say it.

That's a dumb question.

Role playing? Seeing as how these are role playing games, or at least the idea is for them to be, it's a pretty big problem when your only choice is to be a whiny emo brat who has women you don't really like fawning over you with no chance to tell them they are boring and to go away. Final Fantasy VIII is a good example of this. Quistis was the obvious correct choice in that game, yet you are stuck with Rinoa...sigh. Not that RPGs are solely dating simulators but that's just one example of many I could give of the frustration of not being able to control anything that happens.

Having experienced both types of story telling there is a level of investment in the game that you lose when you are a passive observer.

Oh really? And pray tell, what makes western RPGs more "RP"? As far as I remember None of them actually puts in front of a dungeon master and puts a group of players around you to really play a role as you see fit.

The term "RPG" in videogames just implies a level progression that allows you to acquire skills and what not, and it's the same for western or Japanese RPG (that by the way, besides a few exceptions like DA:O, tend to have much deeper and better stories and characters then their western counterparts).

Gotta love western RPG elitists... they're completely clueless about their own raving, but they do provide some giggles

You're talking about an impossible level of choices being offered to the player. No one expects a video game RPG to replace DnD. The difference between the two is that WRPGs actually try to let you role play which is a whole lot better than watching a bunch of stuff happen as you grind through random battles.

It is a pretty dumb question.

RPG= Role Playing Game, so RP= Role Playing?

Like I said, most JRPGs give you no choice of character at all.  You play EmoDouche121 who has to save the world from Whackeybadguy89.

If you aren't defining the role, and have no options in the way that things are done it isn't really a role playing game, it is a battle simulator with specific characters.
