Is "Demon Souls" considered an RPG?

This is in reference to the discussion earlier.

By the gaming industry, I suppose.  "Action" RPGs are like the games i was talking about before though, not really RPish, just fighting games in a fantasy wrd.   T be fair, I haven't payed DS, but anything with 'action' in the description isn't likely to lead to great character depth.

Well deserved, good on Kotaku.

Now if we could get these queens to stop arguing about people putting things into other people's mouth...

Most JRPGs are barely RPGs at all, they tend to be bring battle simulators wrapped in a whackey story that you slog through. Most lack the "RP" in "RPG"

Oh really? And pray tell, what makes western RPGs more "RP"? As far as I remember None of them actually puts in front of a dungeon master and puts a group of players around you to really play a role as you see fit.

The term "RPG" in videogames just implies a level progression that allows you to acquire skills and what not, and it's the same for western or Japanese RPG (that by the way, besides a few exceptions like DA:O, tend to have much deeper and better stories and characters then their western counterparts).

Gotta love western RPG elitists... they're completely clueless about their own raving, but they do provide some giggles

Going by your logic, that means Borderlands is an RPG, which it isn't.  In fact, there's lots of games out there that allow you to aquire skills and what not and they don't even allude to be RPG's.

I'm in no way slating JRPG's, nor am i disagreeing with your point regarding JRPG's as they do have their place within the genre, i just happen to think RPG's are a little bit more than merely addng skills and the likes.

No, its a dungeon crawler with few RPG elements but i dare say its the best dungeon crawler i have ever experienced and it has easily the best combat mechanics and player/ enemy interactions i have ever seen in this genre. The fact that its genuinely HARD and all of your failings are strictly your own give bonus points for me. Seperates the men from the boys whitch boys are like this: "I 've grinded a whole lot..so now the numbers are higher..so i win YEY!" (extract taken from Ed-did-this review).

I thought Final Fantasy (1) was great too. For an NES game and all.

Then I found out Ultima 4 was an NES game too and I tried that.

It's so close to what modern RPG's are like I almost cried tears of blood.

I think Borderlands is classified as Role Playing Shooter which combines both elements of a shooter and an RPG. Similar to Mass Effect and Fallout.
