During a recent thread, a number of people on the forums refered to the protaganists of the recent dragon age trailer as a "Dudebro". The reason given was that the protagonist was 1) a white person, and 2) a male white person. I wondered for a moment if they were seeing the same trailer I had seen. Surely there were no immature sports jokes spouted by the inquisitor, no macho bravado shoved so hard down a persons throat it could easily break the skin on the other side, no mention of catchphrases such as "dude" or "bro" or "man" or "dawg" to distinguish them from any other character as being an ignorant and embrace of the immature.
According to the ever reliable urban dictionary, Dudebro is defined as,
White suburban males, usually 16-25 years of age, hailing from anywhere, USA. Characterized by their love of College football, pickup trucks/SUVs, beer,cut off khaki cargo shorts, light pink polo brand shirts (with collar "popped"), abercrombie & fitch, hollister gear, and trucker hats. Favorite bands include, but are not limited to, O.A.R., Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews Band, Avengened Sevenfold, The Fray, and often crappy radio rap (i.e. Nelly, Dem Franchize Boyz, D4L, etc.). Dude bro's are incredibly insecure in their manhood, which makes them: insanely jealous of their girl friends, overly macho, and laughably homophobic. currently, there is no cure for being a dude bro.
Now, I am not sure if others will agree, but I saw no such behavior from the inquisitor during the trailer showcasing the character, nor did I see such behavior in the other videos that had our generic stock body model traverse the countryside battling red templars. So that leaves the question of what made the inquisitor so appalling to these individual that they decided to call him by such a derogatory term? The only conclusion I could reach, which they themselves admitted in the thread before it was locked, was that he was a dudebro simply by being a white guy.
I find this trend disturbing, as it seems to be an example of the inverse black derogatory trend, where in that trend the word that originally was used to inhumanly designate them all as being ignorant, unintelligent, borderline animal sub-humans, was made into a title of pride in the stupidest amongst their community. Instead, we see a term that was admired and used by the dumbest of the dumb being applied to all people, regardless of action or merit, simply as an identifier of their race and gender.
It is a trend of discriminatory thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes, being allowed to flourish on this site unchallenged, because its easier to think of white man is guilty of a crime then it is to believe him capable of thought or equality. I implore bioware, as I do implore the denizens of this forum, to take a stand now. Stop this trend in its tracks, and block the word dudebro from being used here. Make it a reportable offense to call others this, and spread awareness that it is not okay to judge someone solely on their race or what gender they were born, regardless of what that race and gender might be. Equality for all should come before equality for some, and no one, no matter what they were born as, should be subject to such blatant racial profiling as this.
