Will ME1 work on Win 7 Ultimate 64bit?  I've seen a few threads with people who are having various issues, and I don't want to buy ME1 unless I know it will work on my current Rig.

Thanks in advance

Same for me.. it didn't worked on release on Windows Vista 32bit (and I had to use "countermeasures" to run it) but now it works flawlessly on Windows 7 64bit :)

well, i bought a retail copy of ME 1 (original, new) for 9 euros and it did not work on windows 7 64bit. I wanted to try it so hard i didn't bother to ask for assistance, i "donated" that 9 euros to biowear/EA and bought a digital version i downloaded from EA store: the downloaded version runs really fine and smooth.

So i suggest you this: maybe the retail copies you can find for cheap prices in stores are not optimized for windiws 7, but if you buy the digital verison from ea store it works fine. Maybe they upgraded the digital version to run with 7, and could not do that for the prereleased retail copies.

BTW it was my fault since in the package under "supported operating systems" only windows xp and vista were mentioned, so i spent that 9 euros entirely on my risk, and failed :)

I think I have decided to just skip ME1 and go straight to ME2. The best online deal (from the places I am already a member) is $20. I figure for a little more, I'll get ME2. I can always go back to ME1 if I decide I want to play the story from that point.

I hope I am not making a mistake!

Most likely the game wasn't patched on the retail copy you got.  The digital version gets automatically patched.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Hmm darn, shame that you ended up buying it twice. The EA download manager has a box where you can enter the serial key from your retail Mass Effect game to unlock access to the digital version download. You could have used that instead of re-purchasing. :(

That said, my retail copy of the game worked fine under Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate. Installing the game itself was 100% smooth. The only thing I had trouble with was getting Bring Down the Sky installed. The installer for the DLC uses some kind of aggressive security check (probably securom) during the key validation process that chokes the moment it sees the program "Process Explorer" is running. I forgot for a moment how much securom hates process explorer. :pinched:

Aside from that I've had no issues, yet. Had a bit of slow loading on the menu's, but that was fixed with a quick defrag.

I am running on WIndows 7 x64 no problems at all. Make sure you have all the latest drivers and the game is patched. Otherwise, it's a hardware issue with your machine.

Dxdiag is reporting Directx ver 11 installed and ME1 is showing ver 10.

Wonder if that's my prob.

Win 7 sez my video drivers are up to date, but I've found a slightly newer one.

No, that's not a problem. DirextX is backwards compatible. Windows 7 comes with DX11, Mass Effect was just optimized for DX10.

Just because Windows thinks you are up to date, that isn't necessarily true.

Thanks for taking the time to lend an assist.

I used the compatibility feature and got it to run emulating XP2.

I think I'll update that video driver, though, I reckon I can always roll it back.

I'm a lot better with metal than I am with code :)

ME uses DX9, DX10 still isn't that popular. (Major API changes, incompatibility and whatnot I guess - I'm more familiar with OpenGL)
Anyway, I've got ME1 working on Windows 7 64bit fine. Try turning UAC OFF by sliding the bar to the BOTTOM (Control Panel -> User Accounts and Familiy Safety -> User Accounts -> Change User Account Control Settings). If you're reasonably capable with computers it's generally more of a hinderance than a help anyway.
Otherwise, update drivers, change ME settings (though I doubt it'll help) and if it comes to it, go into the properties dialogue for the shortcut and enable compatibility mode.
Can you be more specfic as to why it's not working? Does it load at all?

I've only ever played it on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and I've been fine. Admittedly, my copy of ME2 is the Steam version, which autopatches.

Nope, once I hit play it just choked, no error message at all.

Is there any downside to running it in compatibility mode?

And will that effect ME2 when I install it?

I think it is recommended, but if you turn UAC off as suggested, it works as well.

Quite right, quite right...I was mainly trying to convey the fact that DX wasn't his issue and that it is backwards compatible with previous versions of DX.

I'm probably not gonna get an answer from this because its so old but I'm having problems with ME1 on windows 7 64 bit. My frames r really low, especially for this game. I have ME2 and i get better performance from that game. I hit the frame rate cap and stay there. ME1 i get around 10-25 fps. here are my computer specs

Pentium dual core @2.5ghz
4bg DDR2-667mhz
Gigabyte SOC 5770
OCZ Fatal1ty 550w PSU
Killer 2100 Network gaming card
Rocketfish 5.1 surround sound PCI card
500gb WD Caviar HD

is there something that can be messing with this? cuz i dont understand how mass effect 2 can be acting better than ME1.

Pentium Duals are very bad, and ME-2 is easier on the CPUs than ME-1 is.

I also have a problem with Mass Effect 1, Windows 7 x64. When I start it with .exe in the folder, it just happened to run ONCE. With administrator, compatibility mode, etc. With no patch, no Bring Down the Sky installed. Then I installed patches, and game is not accepting my ORIGINAL code for the game, I bought it physically, not on Steam. Oh, and I am first and only onwer of the game. Previously I played it once on Vista or XP, can't remeber really.

So what the hell is going on? Game is not working at all. With patches, it doesn't recognize the code from the instruction, without patch 1.02 is demanding original DVD, which I put in. Please help, on can BioWare finally make a patch for Windows 7? I cannot play!
