Bioware - "Characters will have one sexual orientation"

I would have preferable to be able to chose a sexual orientation for the PC and have the LI's fall or not fall into line based on that. Which is kind of like DA2; except in DA2, no matter your gender all characters would try to romance you if they were the ones the Devs had written as being available to both genders. There was even effort to change dialogue based on this. Not sure how hard it would have been to implement a orientation check, but...

Of course we will not know the specifics for some time to come, but what I got from this is that there will no longer be an effort to change a LI to match gender. Basically that it is back to A is straight, B is gay/lesbian, C is bi.

Eh, so if the player character is straight, then all of the LI characters are explicitly straight? I...don't think that would really fix anything. It'd basically be that "no gay" toggle that Gaider shot down on tumblr.

Beautiful women ? Are you kidding me . The Male gamers got played.

As a straight male gamer, I would disagree heartily with you. I enjoyed Isabela and Merril immensely.

he does looks really good.  assuming this is him on the far left.

WarTable_WM.jpg

It's him. Cullen looks a bit like Alistair though, but I guess it's because of the new engine. Dragon Age is not Dragon Age without a sexy bisexual bonde guy.

It's not really much of a bite if that ip never promises equality in that aspect anyways, it'd be like complaining that Jade Empire was a bite.

YOUR AVATAR omg I'm crying.

You get more action from Tallis than any Fem-Hawke ever got from Sebastian.

I dont consider getting action as romance exactly

For the same-gender LIs I am going to say it's DHMG and Sera. Bisexual will be Vivienne and Solas and everyone else is straight. Just some random guesses.

Bah. Then naming Cass and Cullen as LIs after the precedent set by DA2's fully accessible LI cast makes the announcement a rather cruel tease to a fair number of people who thought they surely had them in the sac...err...bag.

Did you just pop in suddenly and like Cullen or something? I never seen you in Cullen discussion before his announcement before.

Wow. Personally, I think this is a brave and progressive choice (which is what we've all come to expect from Bioware, right?) They were the first to even offer gay and bi romance options in an RPG (to my knowledge), and I remember people complaining about how "unrealistic" it was for every romance option to be able to swing both ways. Now, they take a step to make it more realistic but still inclusive, and of course they knew when they made that choice that some people would be upset, not being able to romance "xyz" character they really like. But I do see it as a step toward making their characters deeper and more real. Sure, I might be upset that a character I wanted to romance is unavailable to the gender I'm playing, but maybe this will be the first Bioware RPG where I end up choosing to play as a male on one of my play throughs. Expanding my horizons. :) I avoided The Witcher series for a long time because I knew I'd have only one choice - playing as a man. But when I finally did play, I really fell in love with the world, and with Geralt as a character.

Anyway, just my point of view, but kudos, Bioware. :) Always stay "the most interesting game company in the room". Stay progressive, my friends!

Pretty surprising, I thought for sure they were going playersexual again.

This news irritates me as well.  There was nothing wrong with player sexuality.  It allowed people choices. (I get it.  You don't want Varric to be in a gay romance.) Man, they announce the release date of the game, I'm stoked, and already two buzzkills.

Going back to an old system is progressive?

I'm fine with this. The idea could've been articulated better though (leaving people to figure out what "realistic" meant is clearly backfiring). I hope "realistic" means the characters can be more specific regarding certain details that might've otherwise been left ambiguous to accommodate a player-sexual model (player-sexual in this case not being synonymous with bisexual). In other words, no way for people to pretend character A or F isn't gay or lesbian.

x2 everyone being "player-sexual" was the ideal IMO.  everyone is happy (well, mostly) and no one feels left out.

Most likely Varric won't be a romance anyway :crying:

But I do think they should have announced this before the new trailer. Bad news first, then good news :3

I thought there was a chance this would happen between Gaider's comments and I think one some other dev made a while back on the same topic.  Still surprised that they actually went this route though.

I think a previous post that was pretty on point about the decision is that yes, people will be disappointed by this no matter what happens.  Of course, a big point that's seemed to come from Bioware on this is making the characters their own character rather than just being available for player satisfaction.  They've also repeatedly commented on how they want to make sure that it's balanced and fair which is why I'm fairly confident that people interested in same-sex LI's won't get the shaft like in previous Bioware games (at least as far as this game is concerned).  Still, we won't know how well done or awful it is until the game comes out unless you're simply wanting all love interests to be available to your character which now simply isn't going to happen.

About the 'realism' wording, I personally think my previous paragraph saying how its more about making the characters their own people with defined distinctions and tastes is maybe more what was on the mind of the devs when making this decision (any dev feel free to point me wrong).  He seemed to know the weirdness or effect the word would have since he stuttered with it, but couldn't really think of any other short way or one-word description for it.

On the realism side though, I do agree with the statements though on how I wonder if this affects race as well since it does seem strange to limit it at sexualities, but not races.  Physical attraction's impossible to tell with a character creator unless you specifically had a bar for it like in some old RPGs.

If you truly hate the decision, you can certainly voice your opinions about it, but this is unlikely to change now since Bioware's specifically decided to do this.  You may point out the outcry about races, but that always seemed more of a 'We'd like to do this, but we need more resources' case where as this is a case they specifically decided to give the companions/npcs set sexualities.  At the moment, the time when they're most likely going to be thinking about changing this in future games is after release where they'll be gathering feedback on Dragon Age: Inquisition's implementation of romances.

Interesting. I'd figured Cullen was straight.. He seemed to only have straight options in DAO.

DHMG resembles Freddie Mercury, so it's fitting :D

Gonna bet Cullen will be the gay option. Few ways better than that for Mr.Gaider to get fresh and ample supply of fan tears.

I'd prefer Cullen as a NPC romance over the freakshow companions. Something is wrong when a dwarf and a manchild seem more appealing than the ones that will actually end up being romanceable.

Lets try to not to use the conservative word

It might describe the situation but that poor word got a very bad baggage over the years

I've always liked Cullen sense DAO and even more in DA2. I'm no super creepy fan-girl either. But I'd hate to see him turned into Anders.

Keep him as is BioWare female only.

Having a group of your friends be equality divided in terms of sexuality (2/2/2 split) doesn't seem more realistic to me than all bisexual.

I get your perception though, and again I must thank you for your great wording. :)

Again, great point.  Still, I would disagree.  I think a balanced variety is more realistic than everyone being the same.  Statistically speaking, if you took a random group of 100 people, roughly 50% would be male and 50% would be female (give or take 10% due to unknown variables).  With three choices of sexual orientation, homosexual, bisexual, and heterosexual -- assuming there is no cultural bias to affect their answers -- it would likely be an even split amongst the three.  The odds that even ten people chosen at random would all be bisexual is astronomical.
