Though this will upset some players, it is more realistic.  Period.  I'm not against any sexual orientation, but not everyone you meet is going to be attracted to you.  I've been attracted to girls who turned out to be lesbians and I've had gay guys hit on me only to be disappointed when they learned that I was straight.  Not everyone swings both ways and the idea of "player-sexual" is incredibly unrealistic.  By that I mean, not everyone will be attracted to you just because you are attracted to them.

Some people are heterosexual, some are bisexual, and others are homosexual.  This isn't something that affects who you are as a person or your personality in general, but it is a detail varies from person to person in real life.  Not everyone you meet is going be attracted to both men and women alike.

From article:

Thoughts?  Personally, I cool with this.  It gives me more incentive to play different characters and classes.  I will never understand why some people refuse to play anything other that their gender choice.  You AREN'T the Inqusitior, you're just playing as him/her.

I'm quite happy with this. I'll roll a male inquisitor if there's someone I want to romance who I can't as a female. It's not a huge deal. Different people ARE different sexualities. I may be bisexual but I realize it takes all types and I've always felt uncomfortable with making a character's sexuality completely player-dependant. It makes them seem less like real people with their own wants and desires. There should be gay characters, bi characters and straight characters. Such is life.

So long as there's a decent balance, I guess it's fine, but "real-world" is something I'd find a bit suspect.

Dragon Age is one of the few games that allow me to play as a woman.

Yeeeeeah...how many games have you played? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for being able to choose your gender., and I agree there are not enough instances.  There are way more games, however, that allow you to play as female than a few.

Cool.

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting what's being said. This is probably more about clarity of sexual orientation then being strictly oriented towards men or women.

As in

Character X will be bi in all playthroughs.

Character Y will be straight in all playthroughs.

Character Z will be gay in all playthroughs.

And will be explicitly so.

Not a case of

Character X will appear to be straight in the case of the main character being of the opposite gender, or gay if they are same gender.

Character Y will appear to be straight in the case of the main character being of the opposite gender, or gay if they are same gender.

Character Z will appear to be straight in the case of the main character being of the opposite gender, or gay if they are same gender.

I seem to remember a post by Gaider saying that he was interested in having companion characters with more clearly set sexual preferences, but there resource constraints made it more convenient to have romance-able characters all be available to the player.

Can't say I'm happy about this. If all 6 were companions it wouldn't bother me so much, but since two of them are almost certain to be NPCs instead of companions, it means that you have no choice but to suck it up if you wanted a companion romance but don't like the one available.

I have faith that the NPC romances won't be the gay ones. I'd expect that from the ME team, but I'm hoping the DA team is better than that.

The only consolation I have regarding this is the fact that there should be an equal number of male and female LIs, and unlike ME3, Female Inquisitor should not get the short end of the stick when it comes to love.

That said, I wish they'd kept everyone bisexual.  No, it's not realistic, but I work full time and I don't have a tremendous amount of time to replay the game over and over, just to try new romances.  I'm unlikely to play a male Inquisitor--I prefer playing females, even if I have played males in the past.  Most non-Bioware games expect me to play a male, and I don't give them a second glance anymore.  It also means that I will be sorely disappointed, because I don't have any interest in Cullen, who's probably straight or bi, whereas I'm interested in both Solas and Dramatic Hands, of whom one is almost certainly gay--probably the lovely Dramatic Hands, but it could definitely be Solas.

Part of me thinks it's great because real people have preferences and not everyone's going to love you or even be interested.  But... come on Bioware, it's a game.  We're playing it for fun, not for disappointment.  It's not as if romance is the main part of the game in the first place, keep it fun.

Ya straight males getting buttload of options while all others get short sticks was awesome.

Yeah, that wasn't fair at all.

But the representation - hetero, gay and bi - in ME3 was better than in DA2 where you had hetero and...bi.

Enough to know first hand that there aren't enough female protagonists. You even agreed with me. ;)

I get what you're saying. But could you explain why you are looking for realism in this aspect? I'm just curious because a lot of people (devs as well) use this as a reason for implementing x,y,z. I just want to know why realistic romances is important in a game that is otherwise 100% fantasy.

Woot! This makes me happy!

Earlier today someone said they thought DHMG would be a male only LI, and the thought disappointed me, cos he seems the best looking IMO. But while I'm disappointed that I may not (since it's really all just speculation) get to romance my first choice (based solely on appearances), I do appreciate the complexity it already adds to my perceived relationships with these characters.

I can think of quite a few.  Hint:  Think games that aren't made in America.

Super disappointed to hear this. I guess I'll see if any of the m/m options seem appealing once we find out who they are before I estimate the damage. Really hoping Dorian is either bi or gay.

Actually, I kind of think its the straight romances that will be NPC's, with bi and gay ones as companions. Just if we're going by 2/2/2, and my guesses about characters I know nothing about.

It better not turn out like ME3........

Mass Effect 3 was the third installment of a long standing series where the main character could potentially romance MANY people, as well as potentially get many LIs killed thus leading to potentially less options.

Comparing this situation to DAI is just deluded. Straight male Shepard having more options made sense. Straight female Shepard who kills off Kaidan and doesn't recruit Garrus, will also have less options, unjustly, but also rational.

I was referring to the potential availability of several characters per sexual orientation.

Since Dragon Age Inquisition features a new PC, I confidently assume that the LI spread will be more or less even.

Assuming six LIs, I expect at least one gay male character, one female lesbian character, two bisexuals, and two heterosexuals.

Well, while it's not the all bisexual approach that I think most people prefer, at least we can be comforted by the fact that the DA team is very vocal and supportive of being inclusive in their approach.  This most likely means that we will have the good old 2/2/2 approach that people have been speculating.  It won't be an ideal situation for everyone, but at least everyone will get options to choose from.

OT:  Is it just me or has there been a huge amount of information released today?  Crazy.

See, this is something that mods could solve quite easily. You want a character straight? Download the mod that enables such a romance. Gay? Download the mod that enables such a romance.

I'm actually surprised they just didn't make romances DLC packs.

Random groups of ten people rarely reflect the statistics of the larger world around them.

Myself, I've always been asking for set orientations. I had just been hoping all the LI's would have the same orientation and that orientation would be "bisexual".

Oh well, at this point the only thing there is to do is sit back and see how this plays out, and hope we get everything nice and balanced.
