Okay here's a question, and one that has been posed by others but not answered as far as I can tell:

If we want to run with the REALISM non-argument, then why not limit romance options to race as opposed to gender? Wouldn't it be MUCH more realistic, in the Dragon Age universe, to limit the number of companions a Qunari PC can romance, for instance? Have the 2/2/2 split but for races instead of gender?

If someone were to do that and say "because realism," then I could swallow that much easier. That WOULD be realistic in the DA universe. The whole sexualities thing is not.

Wouldn't it have to be a 2/2/2/2 split for races, since there are 4.  ;)

But as that shows, that is 8 LIs and yet only 2 for a race. That's 1 male and 1 female per race, so that is extremely restrictive. To be open, they'd need at least 16 LIs to give each race the 2 male and 2 female options.

Personally I'm not in favor of either limitation. I wouldn't be in favor of a game that limited romance options if you played a black or Hispanic human, even if it made sense for the setting(say, 1920s).

What I would like is for any interracial romances to tackle the issue, so long as said issue doesn't engulf the romance and become the only thing the subplot is about.

For clarification, does the 2/2/2 rumor mean that there are:

1 'guys only' female

1 'girls only' male

1 'guys or girls' female

1 'guys or girls' male

1 'guys only' guy

1 'girls only' girl

So potentially straight and gay players would have 2 options for preferences? Sorta' disappointing? Especially if one of the 'gay only' or 'straight only' romances is one of the NPCs. I don't know. I certainly don't want anyone to get shafted for the sake of others preferences- especially when I think that gay and to a lesser extent female players have had to deal with that forever. I just wish we could all play in the same sandbox I suppose. (I wish I could say this more eloquently so it doesn't sound bigoted! Sorry!)

Ya maybe 2/2/2 for all races but human because humans are magically attractive to all. :P

Who says we need 2 options of each gender, by the way? Yes that kind of split for races instead of genders would be more limiting BUT it'd be way more realistic, would help "flesh out" the companions, would "add replay," all those things that people have been saying in support of the sexualities split. And it'd be a lot harder to argue with as it'd be that much more relevant to the universe of Dragon Age.

There will be two bisexual romances (both female), two gay romances (both female), and two straight romances (one male and one female.)

It's the only way to be fair. :P

I'm not in favor of either limitation, either... I am just pointing out an alternative that would make a lot more sense within the universe.

Yes, the 2/2/2 system means 2 straight, 2 bisexual, 2 gay. That gives all players 4 options.

All that wasted resources for so called realism.

I'd really rather have 4 playersexual and put the rest of the dialogue into something fun like dialogue expanding on the Pc's background, thoughts and beliefs.

There's a 90% chance we're gonna play warrior therapist again that hardly talks about themselves ever because woe betide you don't pat the companion on the head every five seconds. Me bitter? Never.

Except for the bisexual players, who get six options. But there's no way around that.

We only 3 females in the groups, so someone has to crossdress. I vote for Varric.

Others have said it and I agree: I don't see how the possible 2/2/2 split increases replayability.  If there are 3 male LIs I'm interested in romancing, I will play at least 3 times to experience them.  That is true if they are all bisexual, or straight, gay, and bisexual.  If DA:O and DA:2 are any indication, I will replay DA:I 5+ times regardless of LIs.  It's silly to say that a 2/2/2 split has any positive impact on replayability and, in fact, there are many who would legitimately argue that it would decrease their desire to replay.

In this new, unknown sexuality system, I hope that we get equal access to the LIs most deeply involved in the story.

Hopefully the lesbian only romance isn't just an npc like Mass Effect with Whatsherfacedon'tevenrememberhername McGee.

No, because there will be one straight and one gay people not attracted to the Inquisitor's gender.

I think I found it:

Here's a couple of the quotes.  These are from David Gaider:

Thanks. That gives me a bit more hope for the "even spread", then. Even if I'm not sure NPCs were the ideal way to make it happen.

I doubt the gay romances will be the npc romances.

They did it that way in ME 3 because they were late additions to the series. Here, whole new party with no real preset sexualities from previous games, so they can make whoever whatever they need.

Companion: I feel like there's so much at stake, and with so much we could lose, it's got me thinking about the things I've forgotten to do, people I feel I should reconnect with.

Inquisitor: <3 Fascinating. You know what helps me pull through this sort of thing?

Companion: What?

Inquisitor: <3 Bringing company into the tent.

No one has answered this yes. Are straight girls actually okay with their straight LI be an NPC who has less overall contents and can't be taken on quests? The random kissing and random talks on the road are back now, so I feel like an NPC would miss out on a lot. We also can't ask for their opinions or how they react to different situations.

no..... :(..... :crying: .  and for precisely those reasons.

i'm a lil heartbroken today.

It's already been explained. Magic and all the assorted hocus-pocus is part of the setting. People changing their sexuality on a whim because the player character wants them to is not. This is not going backwards, this is prefering a way to implement gameplay mechanics (which what romances are in the end) over another. Anyone can freely like or not like any mechanic, but this talk of ''going backward'' is silly. It's not like Bioware is reversing a bill legalising gay marriage or something.

How are they "changing their sexuality" if you never know their sexuality to begin with?

Non of the DA2 companions ever confirm their preferences to my memory.

This whole situation is a mess. There's simply no way to please everyone I'm afraid.

I mean, I think it sucks if this decision means less content and options for female or LGBT players but I feel like people would be complaining either way and I am grateful to Bioware and the DA team for their attempts at being inclusive.

Hinata Hyuuga (sorry, I can't get the quote option to work for me on the new forum yet. Probably doing something wrong!)

I guess by my count each gay/straight player would have only 2 options? Unless there's 2 options of each orientation for each gender? Does that make sense?
