I can think of quite a few.  Hint:  Think games that aren't made in America.

If you're not fond of JRPGs you're pretty much fucked. I'm not exactly thrilled by the anime style and overall cheesiness (speaking loosely here).

I can think of:

-TES (bland writing, makes me comatose)

-Dragon Age (good)

-Mass Effect (liked the first one, the sequels gave me several ulcers)

-Fallout

-Oldish games like Arcanum/Baldur's Gate/Kotor

-most MMO (not for me)

-Kingdoms of Amalur (meh)

-Fable (see above)

-Saints Row (liked SR2, was let down by the sequels)

Good story + chance of gender customization -> doesn't happen often.

See, this is something that mods could solve quite easily. You want a character straight? Download the mod that enables such a romance. Gay? Download the mod that enables such a romance.

I'm actually surprised they just didn't make romances DLC packs.

What of the other approximately 80% of people who don't or can't use mods?

I get what you're saying. But could you explain why you are looking for realism in this aspect? I'm just curious because a lot of people (devs as well) use this as a reason for implementing x,y,z. I just want to know why realistic romances is important in a game that is otherwise 100% fantasy.

I'm not the person you directed this to, but I've got something of an answer for that.

Companions feel less like people where their personality and behavior are subject to the player. A companion character who agrees with everything I say and loves everything I do, does not feel like a real person. Yes, there are sycophants in real life. For me, they're not fun to hang around. Companion characters that will go off and do their own thing and disagree or otherwise act against the decision of the main character, feel all the more life-like for it.

Aveline being unromance-able in DA2 was great. It made me feel more like she had her own personality and way of life, opinion of the main character be damned.

Companion characters that are willing to romance the main character, apparently just because they're the main character, don't feel as strong to me.

Super disappointed to hear this. I guess I'll see if any of the m/m options seem appealing once we find out who they are before I estimate the damage. Really hoping Dorian is either bi or gay.

This is my concern too. :P Ugh I don't know if I can take another Alistair or pre-ME3 Kaidan situation.

Some people are heterosexual, some are bisexual, and others are homosexual.  This isn't something that affects who you are as a person or your personality in general, but it is a detail varies from person to person in real life.  Not everyone you meet is going be attracted to both men and women alike.

While that's true, if someone I like in real life isn't attracted to my gender, I still have several billion other people to choose from.

In the game, the options are necessarily limited to a mere handful of people. So I feel like it's an area where I'd rather sacrifice some realism for more player choice.

It's actually going to be 100%; Gaider's said they're not going to let DAI be mod compatible.

I'm good with this

I only hope it's an equal set

Agreed. I don't want a situation like ME3 where the guys have way more options than the girls do.

Thoughts?

It's really vague so perhaps it's best to wait until we actually know what they're planning, with that.

While I personally like the concept of characters having their own set orientation, I wasn't really expecting to see it in DA:I since their other approach gives better bang for the buck (the ratio between resources spent and people pleased as result) That leads me to believe whatever they have planned is going to be 'something else' and I have no idea what it could be.

Yeeeeeah...how many games have you played? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for being able to choose your gender., and I agree there are not enough instances.  There are way more games, however, that allow you to play as female than a few.

Uh, in comparison to the ones that require you to play as male? Do you really want to have this discussion, dude? If we do it as a percentage, I'd bet it doesn't get higher than 20% have a female main character- and that includes the ones that allow you to play as both. I'm pretty sure that counts as a few for the context of this discussion. Female main characters are a VAST minority. It's not really a debate.

Actually, I kind of think its the straight romances that will be NPC's, with bi and gay ones as companions. Just if we're going by 2/2/2, and my guesses about characters I know nothing about.

I hope so and i hope the 'main' ones are bi.

I can be a pro mage blood mage who is evil to the core but still have Alistair romance.

I can create the most ugliest git ever and have companions flock at me

Races don't matter in romances but only gender does?

The examples go on.

I like this news. I prefer not to have everyone "player-sexual". So long as it comes out fair (the 2, 2, 2 method I assume) like it seems they are going to make it then all is well.

It won't be. The inquisitor is a new character who hasn't starred in previous games with other LIs. It's a fresh start. The literal ME3 comparison is unfair and just wrong.

New game. New player character. More even split.

Hmm I can understand that point. However I think there's already a lot of unrealistic aspects regarding the companions, more glaring than just their sexualities. Spamming gifts for approval, never using toilets, staring blankly at you indefinitely while you decide which reply option to choose...

I just feel like realism is not a strong enough argument to dictate companion sexualities. And plus, like someone else mentioned here, if they REALLY wanted to be reastic in this aspect they'd have maybe one gay character out of ten.

Oh joy of joys. I'm super happy to see Bioware going backwards and kowtowing to the ignorant.

"Normally ambiguous"? One game that allowed players to romance any of four available options, and now suddenly Dragon Age has "always been an open and ambiguous beast?"

"More complex"? "Reflects the real world"?

What a giant pile of garbage. I might actually throw up.
