I was thinking more of the general audience and how it's possible they might not even know they have a gay companion (or actively avoid them b/c they do know) or never experience it.

I think that the whole point of giving the companions set sexualties this time is that they will express them more openly, and not just in the romance paths.

Gaider said earlier ... wish I could find the quote ... there will be an NPC who is struggling with their sexual orientation. This may mean that they are gay, but haven't come out of the closet yet ... or maybe to complete self-acceptance. This fits with the more recent announcement. BTW, it is exactly the kind of more "realistic" romance writing some have asked for. As in, yes, it mirrors the problems people face IRL.

I'm trying to imagine who that would be or why they'd have an issue.

I'm curious how that will go...something like, the supposed 'fisting joke' in that one concept art for Sera?

@mocking wow such hostility given your previous posts you are asuuming me to be hetero and attacking me thusly. I have never disclosed nor will because it is irrelevant because none of you know me in real life as far as I know and I need not espouse any lifestyle as superior or inferior by stating my preference and acting prejudiced.

Protip: If you're not flamboyantly gay then you obviously must be heteronormative scum.

Trust me, I haven't assumed anything about you, least of all your sexuality.

Because only a flamboyant gay would be opposed to a video game that segregates content based on gender lines?

If there's a lot of pressure on them to reproduce I can see this being an issue, especially if it's a guy. Also just because liking the same sex doesn't seem to be much of an issue in the the DA universe, doesn't mean that not liking the opposite sex can't be one.

I'm surprised and pleased with this news.

I loved Steve in ME3.

He was so well-rounded as a character etc. I just think he was lovely. I don't think the same would have occurred if he was "player-sexual", even if BioWare would have kept his back-story the same.

And I didn't romance him, as I played as FemShep. I know realism isn't an issue with video games, but on the whole, Steve felt more "real" to me because of this. I think the characters will benefit from this, even if I might be disappointed certain characters aren't interested in my Inquisitor, there's always others!

I don't feel I will be missing out on any content.

Bear in mind that 2 things are true.

1. Thedas seems to be more tolerant to non-het sexuality than Earth, but it's not universally so, and the level of tolerance varies by culture (the Wiki states this).

2. In general, there is definite pressure on people to produce children/heirs (esp. the vanishing races, and nobility), and the world does still have Oghrens and Gamlens who are not very accepting.

Eh, Mockingword may be a little quick on the trigger but as he said he's kinda been alone in this thread. I intend to cut him some slack, I've argued against the grain of whole discussions before and it's not easy, least of all over something important. Most of the time I've been in that spot it's been over trivial nonsense, and I've still managed to lose my cool more than once.

Not to imply I think he's crossed any lines. I don't think he has. Let's not escalate it ok?

@Ricky you trying to get banned? Even If you dislike Mockingwords tone, there's no need to be a jerk.

Also I don't see how his response merits your overreaction. How about you read your own "analysis" and apply it to yourself?

No, please no. I don't want another gay NPC's. I prefer gay companions....

The best solution is to make the npcs bi.

How does David define "NPC" though? By some definitions companions are NPC's.

OK, the problem is terminology here. NPC = non player character. That could mean anybody other than the player character/protag - including advisors (like "Scribe Girl") or other people you interact with (say, Empress Celene).

To help make the distinction, I usually say party/companion NPC (the ones who can adventure with you in the party) to distinguish them from the others.

BTW, yes, I'm still hunting for the quote, but who he was referring to might not be a party member NPC.

I know that in general.  I was thinking about specific companions but you didn't necessarily mean them.

There's the issue though where Steve could possibly be the only gay LI option in the game. While that's fine for you, being a straight female, it might not be fine for a gay PC. Sure it can feel "real" to not have everyone drool over you, but when you are actually only allowed to romance one person in a sea of billions due to programming, the realism argument is sorta rendered moot.

Now I know straight female Shepards in ME3 had it bad, but across the whole series, I have to say that gay male PCs had it worst, so complaints from that end are somewhat justified. It took three games for gay male players to be "catered to". It's no surprise that people like Mockingword are concerned that Dragon Age Inquisition might be a step backwards from the successful, albeit controversial, DA2 method.

It's why some people are concerned over this announcement. What if there is only one LI for gay PCs?

OH MAH GERD -- I don't care :D

Personally found the romances to be rather superficial at this point but I understand how it's important to some peeps, but I really don't see the appeal of it at this point anymore.

I remember David saying a while ago that he got to write a character in Inquisition that he had wanted to write for a long time. I wonder if this character was one who struggled with their sexuality?

Again, as someone who has long talked up the possible benefits of approaching NPC characterisation so, I'm really excited to see what David and his team come up with for Inquisition. Colour me optimistic.

Guys, chill! This is a game. Please be respectful to each other. The topics in themselves are important, but at the end of the day there is no clear and definite conclusion. Don't fret and stress out over things that are not, in the long run, essential to our lives . The game will come out great, and I'm sure there will be a variety of pleasant surprises. There were some disappointments to some players, but we should be aware that Bioware knows what we want - it is just hard to put it all in and still keep the game in-tact and coherent. Be cordial and open-minded, and let's do our best to enjoy the game in the format it will be released. There is still much we don't know, we don't even know the romance options! Let's just be respectful to each other's preferences and opinions and just get hyped for the game and wait to see it in full :)

I don't know if he meant NPCs around Orlais or any other place, but I meant the NPC's who work with you, just like Cortez and Traynor.. i have no desire to have a npc gay again without any importance to the story whatsoever.

Same here. I trust that Gaider and Co. will give us awesome relationship arcs.

But I still want DHMG really really badly >.>

Does real life segregate, Plantiff? Or do characters need to adhere to how you want them because it's a video game? I still do not see how giving characters an actual character is in anyway comparable to segregating anything from anyone. But I guess sexual relationships are the only valid ones right? Can't just be friends with people because they are just waving their conflicting sexuality in my face, teasing me with the fact that they will never let me sleep with them.

I use the same definition of NPC that you do, I'm just saying that David could have meant a companion when he made the original statement.

Oh I know, I'm not suggesting straight people should get more LIs.

All I meant was I don't mind certain LIs being gay-only romances either.

I would prefer some straight, some bi, some gay - and certainly not that the majority of LIs should be available to straight people only.

But yeah, Mass Effect wasn't very good for gay romances (and female in ME3, though true - we did have it somewhat better).
