On my 2nd playthrough I started with ME1 Ashley, but Miranda proved irresistible once again so now I've got two completions both with Miranda as the LI. I'm not sure that if I played it a third time I could bring myself to not fall for Ms. Lawson yet again (at least in ME2). Part of the problem is she isn't in 1 and barely in 3 so that by the time I cycle all the way around back to 2 I feel like I haven't seen her in ages. So how do I break this cycle? I feel like Tali has waited for Shepard for forever now. Each play through she comes so close, but I'm always just a bit more "interested" in Miranda.

Yeah I know I could go Femshep, but so far that has never really worked out. Maybe I could give it another go, but Shepard will always ultimately be male to me.

Side with Jack in the Loyalty conflict. It automatically locks Miranda out as an LI, even if you win her loyalty back later on.

You haven't played enough. Play it as many times as I have and you will have romanced just about everyone. (Just about. There are some romances I still am not going to do.) Besides, how hard can it be to go with Tali one time?

Simple. I never play the same Shepard.

I have one whom I consider canon (romances Tali, and only Tali).

The second (FemShep) has an entirely different moral perspective (romances Kaidan, and only Kaidan).

The third (FemShep) has yet another perspective, origin, etc (romances Liara, then Garrus through ME3).

The fourth is based on Jayne Cobb, and knocked boots with every (human) female he conceivably could.

No two of these Shepards romanced the same person. They're not the same people, in terms of backstory, attitudes, beliefs, or approach.

For me,  femshep romances only Samantha.

I did 2 playthroughs as femshep and didn't talk to Traynor in one playthrough and in another I talked with her, but didn't romance her.

Its not hard to avoid your favorite LI.

The few times I played maleshep I romanced Miranda in one playthrough and in another playthrough I romanced Ashley.

I allowed her to die during the Suicide Mission so I could see what consequences might occur in Mass Effect 3.

Then again....I did kill everyone except Samara and Zaeed during that run.

I think it's more about making distinct enough Shepards that really only "feels" right with certain LI. For example, my renegade soldier clearly fits better with Liara than Tali, who was romance with my engineer Shepard, and my femshep obviously romanced Garrus. At least that's how I feel when playing through each Shepard.

I try not to look at dat ass, although BW makes it hard by putting it front and centre in almost every Miranda shot.

ME1 problem: Kaidan is boring as watching paint dry, so Liara it is.

ME2 Thane, Jacob, or Garrus (I had reach, she had flexibility - what a pick up line, Garrus!). - Thane. But then Liara comes available again because of DLC.

ME3 Thane dies, Kaidan is dead, Jacob cheats, leaving Liara and Samantha, and the fish lady who was telling your pillow talk to The Illusive Man, but she's sorry now because TIM has gone crazy (psst, he's always been crazy). So that leaves Liara and Sam.

Very true; somethnig I am pondering with my latest Shep.

Much easier with the male shep, he can put it about to a much greater degree.

The cycle has repeated itself more times than you can fathom. Don't fight it. Miranda is your salvation through destruction (literally).

Embrace perfection.

On a more serious note, the only I could do it the first time was to avoid talking to Miranda at all past her loyalty mission. For my latest playthrough where I doubled up on Liara and Tali I found that the save-reload is your best friend. Know where the lock-in happens, avoid it before the Suicide Mission and do it after. You'll get the romance scene as soon as you lock in if you do it past the SM. After the SM lock-in with Miranda, seal the deal to get the feels (patent pending) and then reload and go for Tali. Win-win, you get to experience both and your Shepard's not a manwhore.

ME3 does feel weird not romancing Miranda. But the other romances help alleviate that, mostly since there's more of them. <_<

Are you suggesting miranda actually gets regrown in a test tube every cycle with the sole purpose of blocking everybody's view with her arse?

No, I'm saying you literally have to be destroyed and have her put you back together to meet her.

But what I'm really saying is my waifu is superior to your waifu in every way.

Come at me bro.

Who needs a waifu? Oh right, I forgot I used mine as Black Widow target practice.

Better yet, Make one save with a Miranda romance, another save with a Tali romance, and yet another save with a Jack romance. That way you can have three different saves to import to ME3. Of course, to do this you'll need to leave plenty of side mission undone until after the SM in order to advance the dialogue.

Tears of joy are streaming down my eyes.

I'm making a fool out of myself at work.

edit: I typed ass instead of eyes. Damn you, Miranda

edit2: I also seem to have a very different interpreation of what was said there.

I wonder what the name of the scientist who was responsible for getting the hair colour correct was.

"Boots, Citadel branch, Aeyta speaking. How can I help?"
"Hi, I need some hair dye. All of it. And can you deliver it to a secret location?".
"Certainly sir; I assume this will be charged to Cerberus' usual account? "
"Er.. how did.. nevermind, yes. And a copy of fornax too."
"Fornax? You do know that.."
"Yes, yes. They do a good pension and Friday is free bacon sarnie day, ok?".

I find the answer to the OP's question is quite simple:

DON'T PLAY AS YOURSELF!

I realize that this is self-explanatory to experienced roleplayers or actors, but I noticed LONG ago that there are pretty much two kinds of roleplayers: those that play a version of themselves, and those that enjoy putting on another person's skin.

You'll find some of the same limitations in actors as well.  How many "different" roles has Samuel MFing Jackson played as opposed to say, Meryl Streep?

This shouldn't be construed as a disparagement of those who can't find it within themselves to play someone else.  There IS something to be said for knowing yourself that well, but the complete ME experience is probably not quite accessible to that person.

I'm one of those guys that plays slightly different versions of himself :D

The game that got me most content I never saw before was when playing a FemShep. I still haven't seen a lot though. Pretty much didn't see anything low-EMS yet, aside from youtube vids.

I'm now playing a pro-Alliance anti-Turian for a change though, and I'm getting the feeling this going to be a very different game for me.

I did however romance every female in the game already. I will never see the male LI stuff... on my Femshep I romanced Liara to dump her for Traynor. (Traynor was the very reason the Femshep was created in the first place though haha)

The one time I didn't romance Ash was when I downloaded a save where she died on Virmire and Shep romanced no one.   And played an ME2 game with that import

I never did import one into ME3
