Looking back I don't really understand how the Bioware devs, and me, missed how powerful the Reegar was. It was always amazing at stripping shields, but then it just sort of became more insane when all the level 4 ammo was introduced.

One of the main grips about balance changes were they missed the mark in some things. The nerfs to pets was needed, but they weren't really compensated for it. They were insanely powerful at doing one thing, but sucked everywhere else. One that near gamebreaking thing was nerfed to oblivion, they really should have been compensated in the damage area, or not nerfed as much. Combat Drone really needs to be better.

Sabotage too. It was powerful, but it was overnerfed.

They did a fine job with what they could. Only strange buffs IMO were Phase Disrupter and the Batarian Enforcer passive.

Overall, the game isn't as "broken" as some people think. Nothing in this game is idiot-proof. There are no "win" guns/characters/powers. A lot of what makes it seem that way is just knowledge and experience with the game. Plus it's not designed to be insanely difficult in the first place.

I believe the Bat Enforcer passive was on behalf of the Batguard. Just my opinion. I don't count that one in the strange buffs.

Tech combos were always available without kills (after launch anyway - no idea about beta) it was only Fire and Cryo explosions that weren't.

... and I'm pretty sure Fire Explosions did MORE damage originally (and with a larger radius) - just that they only triggered on kills. I used to have the Kroldier down to a fine art where I'd do just enough damage after pasting incendiary ammo, or lobbing in an Inferno Grenade, that I could consistently get Fire Explosions ... and they were awesome for wiping out all the Cannibals in a spawn whilst doing substantial damage to the Brutes. They're less powerful now but easier to trigger.

Tech combos = all tech combos, not just tech burst

Playing with good players means all those Cannibals and Brutes are already dead.  In April 2012 Gold of course - In silver you can just one shot all the cannibals and get Rage so it'd be pointless to use a grenade.  Also lolsilver

These days of course I am the one who kills all those in Platinum like it is lolsilver back in the day.

In Gold, marauders were feared with the loadouts available and inferno are useless against their shields... and everybody else's.  Plus you'd have only 2 grenades at a time, 4 if weak - no Grenade V in those days.  Even the ammo boxes hardly reloaded

If you were owning with Inferno Grenades back in March and April of 2012 then you are bad, because you were playing lolsilver, where you can just go around meleeing everything and be faster - just like today in Platinum

With your 2 weak grenades that don't refill (or 4 even weaker grenades) and no Grenade V, no Fire Explosions, and Claymore / GPS as the best guns unlocked, you are not melting anything on Gold, much less competing with overload spam into chain BEs, headshotting infils, or even melee

Lol at these console scrubs.  Not being able to aim to melee or headshot with your clunky controllers makes foolish mouthing off an occupational hazard.

It's a pretty good idiot test though.  We see who can actually read patch notes, who can actually figure out how things work - and who instead is a scrub. Lol!

Indeed, as an exercise let us imagine what it was like back in the day in April 2012.  At this point the game has been out for almost two months, more if counting the demo.  A long time in the lifespan of a new game

Now it is April.  The good ol days of FBW GG farming.  Geth Gold

The scene opens on a futuristic firebase.  Our intrepid heroes under siege from cold alien AI, the blurts of robotic comms carrying menacingly in the air.  Camera moves in for closeup.

A brave and tough krogan soldier, gritting his teeth in cover.  The krogan can hardly dare to move because of stagger spam.  His two grenades are useless - these are geth!  Everything has shields!  He throws his two grenades anyway.  Nothing happens.  Welp, at least he can cover grab.  That's the end of that story

- To be continued at a later date.

Let us move on to Cerberus.  The krogan is diligently going for the headshot against Phantoms.  But wait - what if this is a console scrub, he can't headshot.  Ok, so the phantom is not yet disposed of.  The krogan must move.  Oh no, an engineer is setting up a turret!  Wish that Atlas wasn't also bearing down.  When that scrub infiltrator wasn't dead he was headshotting Atlases like mooks.

A cold sweat breaks out on the krogan's forehead.  Can he escape to the other side of the map, moving from cover to cover, hoping his shields can recharge in time to save his life?  Maybe he can dispose of the engineer, take down the turret's shields, and burn the turret down before the phantom follows him and overruns his position.  Of course he can, he has inferno grenades - o wait!  They take long seconds to do any damage after the shields are down and there's no fire explosions, Lol!  Plus, Carnage is on a long cooldown because Claymore.

The setting:  Reaper invasion.  Health and armor!  Let's toss those two grenades.  O wait, the infil has headshotted all the cannibals.  O wait, the other krogan is melee killstealing.  The brute has been nuked by biotics.  Well, banshees are more dangerous anyway.  O wait, the banshee has barriers and immunity.  I should save those grenades, I remember I only got 1 back and that was last round.  Let's try them on marauders, they're so scary with their Phaeston 9000!  O wait, they're spread out and they all have shields.  O wait, the infil is also headshotting all the marauders, even with the old shield gate.  Sometimes, it just ain't fair.

To be continued at a later date

Lol @ all these mad bads

Thanks for coming out.  We can air it out at once.  I was getting tired of all these random scrubs popping out of the woodwork every month thinking they are badass with grenades

I am a Platinum player.  You are gold scrubs.  I stream Netflix while pugging Plat on my Krogan Soldier.  Get on my level

I would like to see more balance changes in Mass Effect 4. For all the complaining about nerfing that happened, a lot of good things came out of balance changes.

The most surprising thing to me was not actually a balance change at all, but rather that they never nerfed the Reegar Carbine all that much(If I recall right, they increased the weight a bit).

As an overall, I think they let power creep go out of control a little bit too much which resulted in a number of things getting over buffed to compete and when they nerfed things they had a habit of coming down way too hard on it a number of times, specifically with the Krysae and Sabotage. It seemed they struggled to find a good balance for AoE stagger weapons, as the Falcon and Krysae both took pretty significant nerfs.

Of course they struggled at higher difficulties. They used silver as standards for all the balancing. However, I think in general, Bioware has done a pretty good job though.

They made the TC change specifically because "30% of players on Gold are playing Infiltrators", so I don't think that they only payed attention to silver.

I think they did a pretty good job overall, but there's always room for improvement.

One of the Bioware devs came out and said that they used silver games as balancing standards. I am too lazy to find and link that post now. However, I do agree that Bioware probably did take some of the data from gold matches in to considerations too.

That's the thing. It's easy to say that you used silver games as your balancing standards, but evidence suggests otherwise.

Even then, what's OP on Gold/Plat is generally downright broken on Silver.
