Uh, a lot of information, nice!

I really hope you guys find a way to solve this! I am living in Austria, so that would mean that I'd get both the VO and subs in German, no? I mean, if I have to I can always simply turn the subs off, but then there is still the problem with the VO. Not saying that the German VO is bad but it simply can't compare to the English one.
So, heres hoping that there will be a way to get the original VO! :D

Thank you Derek and Allan for the quick and clear answer.

I just sent him an email saying "Yo Derek."  I'm the hero you all wanted... but he was the hero you needed ;)

Fun aside: Derek once helped me out with some PC CD-Key issues with KOTOR waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaay back on the old BioWare forums, long before I was working here :)

Just a quick question guys since you answered so efficiently...

Are Russian customers purchasing from Russian Origin getting their game with English VO and text as well?? I can remember Russian Origin blocking English language in several EA titles like ME3, Titanfall, Battlefield 4. ...can you clarify to this regard Derek??

Thank you for your answer.

Hi all,

I'll never understand how this is is still a problem in 2014.

My OS language is French, my PC is in France, my Origin language is EN and I play all BW games with EN VO and subtitles.
To avoid unpleasant surprises (and having to play a BW game voiced in French would be very much so) - I would either buy physical copies in the UK or EN keys online.

Now I've had a bad experience with DAA which I bought and downloaded via Origin because for some reason, I had all voices in EN but only FR subtitle data...
The game just wouldn't play - and with the help of a friend  OP here ;P who owned DAA - we investigated that and were able to spot the missing files which she sent me.

Now I had to deal with Origin support before, and there's no way I would trust them to be as efficient as my friend, to put it mildy.

If I'm going to pay 70 or 60 euros for a game, I sure hope I won't have to do this.

And for the record, if I don't have any other choice but to play it in FR, then I just won't buy it and that sort of kills the very purpose of digital pre-order for you guys, right? I mean nobody wins in this - so I wish you to solve that, cause I'm afraid you'll lose sales this way.

@Allan Thanks for poking Derek!

According to the big post - yes, it has direct reply to my OP, and I hope that is not going to change:

You will get English text as well, and English VO on your install.

Anyone who has no local VO (= not German or French) is going to have English voices, English text should be available via settings.

I actually wasn't worried about language issues until Derek French's answer here. I almost always buy my games via Steam or other digital retailers exactly because it has been rather easy to play with the original language this way (incidentally, I had no problems with the previous DA games or ME games - all played in english just fine).

I absolutely hate German VO - most of the time, the quality is seriously lacking, and even if the voice actors are good, the translation simply can never be as good as the original was.

Purchasing the PC game via another retailer will not help you in this situation. You will still go through the install process via the Origin client based on your language and region settings. Purchasing a disc version is just installing from local media instead of downloading from the internet.

Anyone who has no local VO (= not German or French) is going to have English voices, English text should be available via settings.

Unfortunately, I live in Germany - so I'm out of luck considering english VO? Seriously? Even if I went and imported the physical DVD from the UK, the Origin client would go and replace the (existing!) english files for me because I live in Germany? At least that's how I understood Derek French's answer. Please correct me if I'm wrong?

Also, does this concern only the PC (digital) version of the game, or does it apply to the (digital/physical) PS3/4/XBox version as well?

And for the record, if I don't have any other choice but to play it in FR, then I just won't buy it and that sort of kills the very purpose of digital pre-order for you guys, right? I mean nobody wins in this - so I wish you to solve that, cause I'm afraid you'll lose sales this way.

Same here. I'm as big a Bioware fan as any of you but I'm not going to play this game if I can't do it in english with the original voice cast. I wouldn't mind German subs/text too much, but the quality of the voiced part of the game is extremely important to me and if I have to suffer the German version, I will not play it.

Please consider giving everyone the option of using the original english VO, even us poor Germans/French. You take great care in choosing your voice actors, who have all been awesome so far, and who made great games perfect. Please give everyone who chooses to the option of listening to them.

Yeah, that's interessing. As I said before, the PS4 seems to change the game language if it set to English. ( Well, it does so with Killzone, Ghosts and AC IV ), will the PS4 change DA:I aswell? Or will there be an English dialog package like ME3 via PSN store?

The only deciding factor if I should pre order it from origins or if I should buy it for the PS4 is the VO thing right now.

Yeah, I hear you Silith. Sometimes I can't stand the German VO. Ugh, why are guys doing a German VO xD

sigh. let's return to hear all the bla bla bla when stopping playng to read the subtitles of the party banter.

@ Derek French.

I know it's a longshot but is there any possibility to add Korean language for DA:I? No? Not even for a text?

Personally I wouldn't hold my breath over this matter but apparently EA did upload some DA:I trailers with Korean subtitles

and the whole brand-new DA:I official site offers Korean as a viable language option.

So things are kinda pretty contentious here in Korea  Can you kindly shed some light on this?

So let me get this straight.

I currently live in Germany. In Origin store it says "English (US)" under supported languages. I assumed that this means I will easily be able to select English both for voice over and text. Was I wrong?

Alrighty, this just scares the sht out of me, NO WAY I will be playing the game in German.

no, DAO and DA2 wheren't. only english voices. but the ME trilogy was. just hopeful thinking. It's not a deal breaker, since I'm already accostumed. But having character speak in one's native laguage help immersion.

You would probably end up with English and German text and German VO. We are working on a solution for getting you English VO.

The plan is that you will get Russian and English text and English VO.

My OS language is French, my PC is in France, my Origin language is EN and I play all BW games with EN VO and subtitles.

From what you describe, having an English Origin client will get you English text and VO. I cannot test and verify this in Canada for you at this time, but it is something that I can verify closer to final.

Unfortunately, I live in Germany - so I'm out of luck considering english VO? Seriously? Even if I went and imported the physical DVD from the UK, the Origin client would go and replace the (existing!) english files for me because I live in Germany? I cannot speculate about ordering out of country builds. It is not something I can test myself, so I just can't speak authoritatively on this. For access to English VO, we are currently working on a solution because we don't want this to be difficult for our customers and force them to do complicated things in order to play our games in the manner that they want. We are working on it.

The only deciding factor if I should pre order it from origins or if I should buy it for the PS4 is the VO thing right now.

Well PS4 titles can use 50 Gig Blu-ray discs, so I am pretty sure that everything would fit on one disc. Making multiple language exclusion discs in this situation feels like it would put a strain on our build process for not much gain. Games on consoles usually pick up their language based on the console language.

This isn't something that I have looked into yet, but I can probably do it as we get closer to final.

Oh my... I always hate the German VO. They're terribly acted and dull. Crossing my fingers for the English VO, because I already preorderd the game via Origin.=( and there is no way I'm going to suffer through the German version.

Honestly I just wonder out of curiosity why they even bother translating the game in other languages when English is so widespread now. Seems they are spending money for something nobody want (French and German players begging to have english in their games) since the quality of those traslations is generally poor in many European countries. I understand text and commands but VO really not. Personally i never used any other language other than english in my games and I have also set english in my computers and consoles.never bothered using my native language since I prefer the original language/option if available.

PS Of course I'm not an English native speaker.

Living in Germany as well, having Origin set to English. So far every game I installed was completely in english without a prompt or anything so I'm not really worried.

Hi Derek

Many thanks yor answer to this pertinent and salient question! (important, too :) )

I was just wondering what version people in Scandanavian countries will get. I do hope we get the UK version like we always seem to do. And also that the game, the manual and the subtext is in English. I'd rather not play this game in German in Denmark, please. I'm not sure if I have an english origin client, the origin client in my country (Denmark) does end end .com - does this I have a English Origin account?

I just wanted to drop in and express my gratitude to Bioware for including different VO (in my case German). While the English VO is usually better, it's always nice to have a choice, especially since the German VO vastly improved over the years (ME3 for example was very good).

So, thank you Bioware, your effort is appreciated and I'm looking forward to playing DA:I both with German and English VO.

My main problem with the german VO is the translation of "you". They can never decide between "Du" or "Sie". It's ridiculous that Garrus in ME2 or ME3 is adressed in a formal manner, when he's basically Shepards best friend.

That and the german VA's sound lifeless most of the time. Tried playing ME1 in german and gave up after 10 minutes.

We only do "English" as it is a fantasy game, and not different regional English versions. I am not sure off the top of my head, if you would get German VO, but as you said you have an Origin client set to English, you should get English VO and text. Accounts aren't flagged as a certain language or region, but rather determined dynamically.

@ Derek French.

I know it's a longshot but is there any possibility to add Korean language for DA:I? No? Not even for a text?

Sorry, I missed this one earlier. There are no plans for a Korean text version of Dragon Age: Inquisition at this time.

I'm relieved to hear DAI won't be dubbed in my language (my ears are still bleeding after ME).

And I'm happy I'll be able to easily change the text in game.

I appreciate the effort of the localization team to let a wider audience enjoy the game, but the localized content is always going to suffer quality loss, and I'd rather experience the game reading and listening to the words that came out of the Writers Pit, the original actors, their voice and accent.

I think localized content should be just an option, and not the default one.  :)

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.
Just extra piece of info for what it's worth -  I've taken a look at my Origin app, and it currently says:

  • In account > Country of residence: US (I know, I lied)
  • In account > Language: English
  • In application settings > Origin client language: English US

But when I launch the store, I land on the French store, with prices in euros (70/60), and the product description says available languages are DE, ES, EN, FR, IT - without any details about VO vs. subtitles.
