Because dark souls 1 melee was amazing. Having each weapon defined by their reach, speed and move set is a million times more interesting than having a whole bunch of weapons +stat, -stat. To give you an example, in dark souls combat it is usually a really bad idea for a character to be swinging a great sword around in close quarter areas like narrow ledges and stairways, because the sword would just keep on staggering the weilder and tire them out with each swing of the sword swinging into the wall. In that type of envirnoment, the character would do a whole lot better by weilding some sort of thrusting weapon like a spear, or a rapeir which is shorter than a spear but lighter and faster.

Dragon Age isn't supposed to be a hard core realistic combat simulator, I get that, but regardless of realism I think that DA should look at how dark souls did weapons because they were really well done.

This is a party based tactical game, not an action game.  Or at least I hope it is.  Distinguishing weapons in that way doesn't really make sense in this context

Though Dark souls' animations are pretty nifty.

whats your point? that party games can't make the envirnoment a core part of the gameplay? That doesn't sound correct.

In a tactical party based rpg, the precise targeting and timing of each swing isn't something that is under the direct control of the player, so the speed, reach and move set don't serve as a very good way of distinguishing the weapons.

you control the weapons people use and whetehr you want them out and swinging in the wide open with a claymore or thrusting a spwar in carrow hallways.

Dark Souls combat is good in Dark Souls, not in Dragon Age.

Doesn't make sense. Dragon Age is a real time with pause party based RPG, Dark Souls is an action game with RPG elements.

I love Dark Souls, but asking for that kind of combat in Dragon Age is asking for a totally different game. There will be new games inspired by Dark Souls. Dragon Age is thankfully not one of them. We have so few party based games already, let's at least try to save the few we have.

No thank you, i want to be in control of my party and thier abilities, having to concentrate on one sincle character and timing weapon swings is not what i'm looking for in this particular RPG and if you are then unfortunately you will be dissapointed.

If you're just talking about giving a greatsword a penalty in cramped places, they could do that.

Though realistically you could probably just start half-swording, rather than needing to switch weapons.

Some of the combat dynamics were good I do agree.  The point about swinging a two hander in a tight space is a good one.  Dark souls overall was simply too difficult for me to enjoy.  Some of the basic combat dynamics were good though.

would you rather +/- stat modifiers then? because that's boring.

Boring is fine when it's something I don't want to deal with in the first place. I'll take boring over annoying any day.

If they could automate the system so companions could fight intelligently with multiple weapon sets and different terrains, I'd be OK with this. But if I have to keep fiddling with that for everybody all the time, then no. Switching between melee and ranged in DAO is about as far as I want to go.

Nothing about the OP's request requires that DAI become an action game.  A game could be fully turn-based and still offer the complexity of weapon differences that he describes.

I'm all in favour.

No health regeneration is bad enough, I don't want no stamina regen + instakill by skeletons in this game on top of that.
