Personally i loved but also hated the final episode... its like great the hellmouth has been permenately closed, but there are more all over the place so they decide to go and find them and close them then the screen goes black and i'm left with questions.

You want to be extremely careful with comments like that, they can get you banned.
As for getting it "free" I have two suggestions -
watch for reruns of Buffy, some channels do that. Otherwise use Hulu. Currently all of Season 2 is up, but it rotates roughly every couple months.
for comics, if you don't have a friend to borrow them from, check your local library - they often carry graphic novels (unfortunately usually in the Teen section) - I've read many comic trades via my library
Speaking of library, my local library also has all the season of Buffy and Angel available for check-out as well.
There really is no excuse except selfishness for file-sharing such things.

Let me put it this way: If the idea of characters that should have been dead returning in lame ways, high magic, crazy government tech like laser canons, time travel, and antagonists with goofy names that can fly appeals to you, buy it.
As for the show itself, loved it of course. I watched it since its premiere to the bitter end. Although I hold the blasphemous view that Angel turned out a better show by series end. Buffy began taking a nosedive for me midway through season 6. Then picked up a bit in season 7. It was good they ended it there because the show was losing steam and suffering from what I thought were dubious writing choices.
I thought the series finale was good though. Not the best episode *ever*, but above average. There were a few touching moments. That D&D session, Giles reference to season 1 when he says they're still doomed, Anya's chat with Andrew, ect...
The final scenes where great. I love how they killed off Anya. Not because I disliked the character. She was great. I just liked the contrast between her death and Spike's; because death can be sudden and brutal. Willow unlocking the scythe's power was a crowning moment of awesome, as was the Slayers all gaining superpowers world wide. Buffy ended on a message of female empowerment and self sacrifice. I felt that was enough. It left me feeling satisfied with how the series ended. Sunnydale's complete collapse into the Hellmouth felt especially appropriate. In my eyes they ended the show on a high note; despite the deaths.

I love the Buffy Season 8 series. It's battling with Terry Moore's Echo and Boom's Do Android's Dream of Electronic Sheep as my favorite comics right now. Buffy Season 8 has been a favorite since it started, and hasn't slowed down for me in the least. With Joss writing some and overseeing the story like he did with the show, it's exactly the same stuff.
What you might dislike, from some of what you say Seagloom, is the exact stuff Joss would have done had he had the budget for the tv show. He was very limited with what special effects he could pull off - I guarantee you that Dark Willow or Giant Snake Mayor would have all been much more impressive had he had the kind of budget that Lucas had for Star Wars prequels.
Anywho, I love the comics.
Angel: After the Fall, not nearly as much, but I still enjoy it. Though I am waning a bit at this point.
But to each their own.

Echo on the other hand is great. Then again Terry Moore guaranteed I'd be a lifelong fan after Strangers in Paradise.

Don't get me wrong I love vampire fiction but I just can't take Buffy and it's spin-offs seriously.
Even the vampires look weird(they look like beardless Klingons for goodness sake).
Kindred: The Embraced is the only vampire tv show I'v ever fully got into because at least that had a solid vampire lore that took itself seriosuly(WoD FTW)

Also a fan of Kindred: The Embraced. Great show.

Seagloom, Joss not only wrote quite a few episodes this is his "Season 8" - the plot and arcs and stuff are as much his as any of the tv seasons.
I'm not trying to convince you to like it. I know many people who loved Buffy until season 3, or season 4 was horrible, or season 5, or 6 and 7 ...
You can find ardent Joss Whedon fans who hate Buffy entirely.
I accept you tried to like it and didn't. That's cool.
Personally, I wasn't a fan of the first season. *shrug*

Cheesy? Maybe at times considering the aforementioned budget. There were scenes when make-up and monsters looked goofy. I still remember how silly that shark-headed demon looked.
I completely disagree on Buffy being cliché however. One of Buffy's most consistent qualities was how gleefully its writers subverted tropes. The only part I found somewhat cliché was probably Angel's season 2 story arc with the whole teenage girl sleeps with boyfriend and he turns into a jerk afterwards, or in this case losing his soul and becoming an almost literal ex-boyfriend from Hell. Even with that cliché was exaggerated to such a degree that it made the whole thing worth watching.
On the whole though? Buffy's plots often ended in ways directly opposed to how many movies and shows commonly did. You are entitled to dislike of course, but I cannot agree it was cliché.

I wish I did. Then I'd have more BtVS to entertain myself with.

I thought the final episode was pretty good, aside from losing some characters. It finished on a sense on adventure.slimboiphatz wrote...

It was a great show, and quite witty. Buffy herself wasn't my favourite character though. Aside from the main cast, interesting additions included Amy, Faith, and the trio (Warren, Andrew and Jonathan). Warren was always a bit... weird, I suppose. It was interesting the way the trio started out relatively harmless and goofy, and then turned rather nasty in quite a short span of time. Willow and her magic was always fun, too.

Overall BtVS is the TV show that has affected me the most. No other show has made me feel and think as much. I love the dialogue, I love the characters. It's just a very special show.
I'm also a big Spuffy and Spike fan. Spike must be my all time favourite fictional character. His character arch was so unique and wonderful, he made me laugh and cry and everything in between. His unconventional love story (yes, I think it was real love) with Buffy was almost an obsession for me at some point. I wrote fics and kept looking for an answer to the big question: Did Buffy mean it when she finally told she loved him?
I miss feeling so passionately about something fictional. BtVS had me go through some great debates, and I met many lovely people through the fandom.
On a side note, I'm not familiar with season 8 at all. It doesn't interest me and I find it hard to take as canon. I have learned to accept that the story ended within the shows and I think I prefer it that way. The characters will live on in my imagination and memories.

i agree with you, i've done a lot of research about the season 8 thing and i feel that it would only take away my enjoyment of the series if i read them. Buffy and Spike, a classic tale of a bad guy turned good and falls in love with the heroine, quite possibly the most underrated part of the whole series was their love affair. I remember in season 6 i believe was when they first got together in that old rotten house that almost fell down on top of them. It was one of my most favorite parts of the show... but tho there are way to many to choose from.

All you are missing in the comics is the live actors.
If you don't like the story of the comics, odds are you wouldn't have liked a live action Season 8 either.
Just saying.
Or you don't like following movies/tv shows into the comic medium. *shrug*

Yes, in a way so. But what made Spike so special was, in my opinion, that he really wasn't the typical bad boy after all. He had a lot of bravado and a lot of arrogance but inside he was still William the Bad Poet - a hopeless and mocked romantic and a total mother's boy. Spike had so many layers, and James Marsters simply did a brilliant job bringing the character to life.Buffy and Spike, a classic tale of a bad guy turned good and falls in love with the heroine...
I love the glimpses of Spike we can occasionally see in Zevran. It seems clear to me how Spike was one of the influences while creating him.

I already established my opinion of the comics above, so this post is not about that. I just wanted to add that you make a good point. I was unlikely to enjoy season 8 whether its plot was identical to the comics or wildly different. I was glad Buffy had a chance to reach a proper ending rather than face outright cancellation or stagnation. The show was in a steady decline for years, but I stuck with it even though season 6 almost killed my interest. Season 7 began in a way that kept me interested, but then all the potential slayers showed up and several characters saw less screen time than they used to. If Buffy had gone much longer, particularly with a giant cast of other slayers, I probably would have moved on eventually.
