The romance shutdown

I was wondering if people would like to see the return of something like the Aveline 'romance' for non-LI characters in DAI? Or something else?

Hawke was able to express interest and flirt, until eventually it all came out and Aveline politely shuts you down. Personally I like this, since even though there was no romance, you were able to express Hawke's interest in her and receive friendly acknowledgement in game (eventually). Would you like that to happen if Vivienne/Iron Bull/Solas/DHMG/Beardy/Sera is not an LI?

Or would you prefer something simpler, where you simply flirt once and are immediately shut down. No build-up, they just tell you they're not interested. I believe this happens if a maleShep expresses interest in Traynor in ME3, but I'm not certain.

Or would you prefer if it just wasn't referenced at all, that way there's no tease and you can just let you character pine in silence (or headcanon it). If I had to give an example, perhaps the Awakening companions. Or Varric. Or Morrigan/Alistair/Sebastian for a same-sex character.

Maybe a combination?

I like the romance shutdown option.  I think it breathed new life into the companions that weren't interested in the PC.  And it's more sensible than simply not being able to flirt with them at all.  Obviously this will lead to some heartbreak for PCs who have their eye set on those that will ultimately reject them, but I thought it was a fun element.  Particularly if you can have an ongoing flirty banter that goes absolutely nowhere.

Depends on the character in question, I guess.

Vivienne seems like she'd be fairly blunt in shutting down any unwanted advances, while also complimenting your excellent taste.

Sera would probably make fun of the Inquisitor.  Might allow a bit of time to allow for maximum embarassment.

Cullen might do Aveline's sweetly oblivious thing.

All non-LIs should have that kind of treatment Aveline got.

Technically I don't think Aveline shuts Hawke down. If she is flirted with in the finale quest, she's completely clueless and Donnic interrupts Hawke before he or she can spell it out to her. Traynor does politely shut down male Shepard though.

All for it. It was one of the things I liked about Aveline.

The Varric shutdown with sarcastic femhawke was a great exchange.

I approve of anything that makes romances less game-ified. Get some variation, make it less of a goal and more of a relationship. If that relationship is one-sided attraction, then so be it.

Yes, I would like if this happened again for one or several of the characters who are no LIs. ^^

Though I never had any interest in Aveline as more than a friend, I found it was cool that players had the option to at least try to win her over and get a proper ingame-rejection. I'd prefer this over simply never having the option to flirt at all or any explanation why I can't.

Hum, I have no idea how I feel about it to be honest. I would be careful not to lead the player on for too long, getting the shut down after a lot of courting would feel like a punishment.

I would prefer if certain characters shut you out if you did one unspeakable thing. (Leliana and the sacred ashes) for example.

I like this, because it gives a sense of closure. That said, leading the player on too long could lead to irritation instead. Especially if pursuing the character means they miss out on triggering other actual romances.

I was never aware of the extent to which the flirting with Aveline could go until checking it on Youtube, and I like it. I think non-LI's could do well with this sort of thing.

I'll think that I'm just going to see who are LIs and then choose one of them and try to have romance with him so I propably wouldn't try to flirt with others. I guess I wouldn't try this but I don't see why it couldn't exists.

I also liked this with Aveline, felt real, but as someone else said, I think it would depend on the character.

I certainly don't mind the romance shutdown option. I can see Vivienne taking on that role, either because she has an in-game LI (much like Donnic to Aveline) or because she considers herself too good for the Inquisitor. Or just simply doesn't want to be bothered with romance in general. Same goes for the BeardWarden, who either considers himself too old, too close to his calling or lost someone and can't really welcome someone new into his life.

*-keep in mind any character can fit the romance shutdown option here

I welcome the presence of romance shutdowns. Aveline's was a memorable part of her character (just take a look at how many people remember it), a nice touch to maker her more real. Traynor's was justified, cool. But the funniest one has to be Mordin's in ME2 :D

I agree on this point. I think Aveline's was a good amount of time since it was pretty much the duration of her Act 2 quest when you could flirt with her, so it wasn't dragged out from the start. But you would run the risk of missing out on other LI (especially Fenris and Isabela).

I foresee this just happening on its own due to now having confirmed gay and straight romances. I hope they still let you flirt with them, but the characters that aren't interested in your gender will just tell you no.

And I support that.

That sounds good to me. I'd hope that the straight characters can shut down as well as gay ones though, definitely not a repeat of DAO, where I'm hoping for a romance with Morrigan but it's never happening because she's actually straight.

If its for characters who arnt romances then yess I love Aveline and Varric so much(You can flirt with him kinda too)

But if its as jarring as "Ohhh if only you were a dwarf *Wink*...*WinkWinkWinkWink*.... go make a dwarf character" please no. Would be kind of nice if they just kept coming up with a different excuse no matter what you are.

I'd always like the OPTION to flirt with characters, even if they're going to reject it or just laugh it off. It makes things significantly more fluid and interesting regarding character interactions. I'd be fine with one of them politely mentioning as an aside that they aren't interested if the Inquisitor is persistent, but otherwise I don't really need a whole plot to come out of it. As enjoyable as getting Aveline a boyfriend was, that entire character arch was rather silly.
