I did not originate this theory, and I'm not the only one floating it around these threads...

But I'm convinced that the "magical explosion" mentioned on the Dragon Age website is Kirkwall imploding in a blaze of Fade-tearing fury.

I anticipate the entire city being completely leveled, and a couple of the pictures on the website seem to show people being immolated where they stand.  And all through Dragon Age 2, everybody kept making a big deal about Kirkwall's history, geography, etc.  (E.g. "The Enigma of Kirkwall")  I'm pretty sure Kirkwall was specifically designed for the purpose of ripping open the Fade.  From a narrative perspective, it would bridge DA2 to DA:I in the same vein as DA2's prologue with Hawke & Co. fleeing the Ferelden blight featured in DA:O.

Anybody else want to weigh in on supporting/refuting evidence?  We've got more than five months for idle speculation.

The explosion in the trailer happens in the building containing the Urn of Sacred Ashes, apparently.

Which building? The ancient temple it was found in, or a building the Chantry brought it too? Because I doubt the latter would happen seeing as my Warden knifed Genitivi to prevent anyone from finding out about the Urn.

I personally like Yggdrasil's theory, though it relies a little too much on the premonition of the Tevinter magisters. Unless the magisters are the ones who caused the Veil Tear. Hm...

We aren't going to Kirkwall or the free marches, so no not going to happen even if some people really really want it to.

So when we form the inquisition in this game it's a Master Stroke almost by going through a loophole, because at the beginning of the game when the head of the Chantry and the head of the Mage's faction they're going into the Temple of Sacred Ashes to this peace talk, and they're all killed. There's this massive explosion and this breach in the sky opening up, and the Chantry's in absolute chaos. It's headless. You've got infighting between different factions, you've got people saying screw it let's all retreat back to Val Royeaux and elect a new leader et cetera.

How embarrassing, but I'm afraid @Hinata is correct!  Five minutes after posting this topic, I went back to reading the AusGamer article:

Apparently, they've let it be known that the explosion takes place at the Temple of Sacred Ashes AND kills the head of both the Chantry and the Circle (which means Fiona will appear in the game, but not for long).

Hopefully Adrian is also there so she gets blown up.

Justinia? Dead? That settles it. The Chantry has to die.

Least Fiona dies and hopefully Adrian, so I'll be happy.

It better not be DA II on steroids, I swear.

I wonder if Leliana told the Chantry and Mages where the temple was? It's the only plausible explanation I can think of if Genitivi bit it.

The Chantry itself, and the Templars arent bad. hell some of the templars outright sympathize with the Mages. its just the BAD Templars and BAD Mages, and BAD clerics you see.

I guess Leliana told the Chantry where the Temple was then, because I never went back to Genetivi's house after I found the Urn.

The explosion must be some sort of lyrium atom bomb or something, given that the temple is under tons of lyrium veins.

No way, Justinia is (most likely) dead?  :( Well, at least Fiona won't be around anymore either. I don't think.  Oh, I hope not. That'd be really unfair to me. But I can already see this happening: because she didn't support reform in Asunder, she wasn't at the peace talks anyway and lived to lead the mages in DA:I. Bummer.

Justinia? Dead? That settles it. The Chantry has to die.

So in sumation: Some magical event happens which kills Justinia, and you decide to blame the Chantry (hey, why not, eh?), and burn it to the ground.

Right then....

What is wrong with killing characters off? DA2 is not the only story that did it, from what we know of the start of the game, I love the beginning. It sets up the conflict perfectly and  creates a good reason why these people are joining the PC to the stop the breach.

So was Justina a good leader or what since people here seems rather upset about her death? Not joking, I just don't know much about the Dragon Age lore outside of the two games.

She was a backstabbing, self-serving harpy if you ask me.
