Why "Inquisition"?

Why did BioWare decide to name the game "Inquisition"?  The word immediately brings to mind the 12 century European religious persecution made infamous by its senseless murder and torture.  I have never heard the word used with even neutral connotations.  And then to introduce the main character as an "Inquisitor"?

Would you be interested in playing a game called "Dragon Age: The Third Reich" where you play as a Reichsmarschall, even if it was set in a fantasy setting?

But there wasn't any "Reich" in DA to begin with so there can't be a third one.

Inquisition however did exist in DA.

Because BioWare wanted all the DA fans to say "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition."

Because you are the seeking the answer, or inquiring, the cause of the Breach. One who inquires is called an inquisitor and a group that inquires is called an inquisition.

There were five names unveiled in an early survey,

  • Exarch
  • Apocrypha
  • The Breach
  • Inquisition
  • Inquisitor

Looks like many people like the "Inquisition" more than the others.

For what it's worth, I voted for Apocrypha.

The original Inquisition in the DA universe was very similar to the Spanish Inquisition. It roved the world of thedas persecuting Mages and magic users, killing them indescriminately at timesm then the Navarran (spelling?) accord was made and the inquisition was formed into the 2 groups of the Templar order and the Seekers of Truth, after the events in the book Dragon Age Assunder the Nevarran accord has been made null and void, thus the Inquisition returns, only this time it's purpose is find out the truth of what has happened and to fix things.

"Inquisition" seems kind of empty when you're not allowed to torture ppl. or burn witches. or call someone heretic... and burn him.

or be evil, moustache twirling... priest blood mage person in dress.

but hey, they could always go with "DA3:The mage/templar war and Orlais civil one. Don't forget the Dales. And big hole in the sky."

It doesn't bother me at all as I have no idea what the Spanish Inquisition or whatever group it refers to in Europe. I do know what the wor itself means however, and I think it's apt for what we do in the game.
