I have heard a number of people refer to the Protheans as Prometheans. Is there some TV show or comic book, or sci-fi/fantasy novel that is very popular, but with which I am unfamiliar that stars Prometheans?

Prometheus was also the name of the  disappointing Aliens prequel.

Prometheans are from Halo 4. They have nothing to do with the Protheans. I've seen them mislabel them as well (usually in the comment sections of gaming sites). Those people who do so are simply idiots.

They both come from the same general human mythological basis.

 

But yeah, pretty much nothing else.

Like Swobyj said, I think the words are both derived from the same root word. There are plenty of stories that use some derivation of Prometheus to denote some sort of lost, ancient race that some how was involved with mankind.

That's where it originates. Figured the OP was asking why people confuse Protheans with Prometheans. Which usually stems from gamers who don't differentiate the words of the main enemies from two highly successful series.
