Cant see how you could invent a new gender withe anyone going "thats just an analogue of this gender", unlike invented races, religions, or cultures which have more ambiguity and room to debate.

It doesn't have to be "invented". Binary gender system isn't the only one that exists in our own world, and some societies have tackled this issue differently. The Bugis people are perhaps most obvious example, as they recognize five different genders.

The point being, there's actually quite a bit of ambiguity and room to debate, outside of the binary box, and it was already done here and there. As such instead of "inventing genders" the setting could easily just borrow concepts of existing cultures.

The problem with "gender neutral" companions is that the voice is generally either female or male and that in turn makes the character come across as either male or female, like with Legion and EDI.

The only truly "gender neutral" companion I can think of is One of Many from Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the betrayer.

Really? Where did you hear that? =)

merril mentions spirits of honor and joy. imshael mentions spirits of love and honor pg 224 masked empire alongside valor and justice that we know already. he also calls himself a spirit of choice.

gaider mentioned that there are more demontypes than the 5 we know that have yet to be seen like envy despair fear and remorse. makes sense that its the same for spirits

Bioware like to use people with nonconform gender identities for cheap laughs. Like Serendipity in Mark of the Assassin.

Awesome! I need to read The Masked Empire. Amazon international shipping takes its sweet time though, so I haven't received it yet.

It was a mistake that Serendipity ended up being the butt of that joke though, it's a writing error. It's very apparent if you sleep with Serendipity and get that variation of the scene. Mary Kirby (I believe it was?) forgot to write a proper branch in the case where Hawke hadn't had sex with Serendipity which makes the scene come off as very weird, with more or less the only interpretation that makes any slight amount of sense being that Tallis makes fun of Serendipity. Which wasn't the intent at all, sadly.

That said it's still a bad cliché that Serendipity is a prostitute, but MotA really wasn't intended to be bad.

They had the chance for this with Justice, but by letting that spirit inhibit a male body they missed an interesting opportunity.

as opposed to....a dead blight wolf or dark spawn?

Is this a joke? Because you can be female or male and be gender-neutral, or gender-fluid. Creating a character that is not human and was no concept on gender, is a different thing than creating a character with a concept of gender that is gender-neutral. This are different things. Gender is a internal thing, your parts are not connect with gender.

As for the topic Shale was a good character actually but I am not expecting much this time around.

Gender is also perceived - hence phraseology like "gender roles". So the fact that the character self-identifies as not having a gender wouldn't mean that either other characters or the player wouldn't mentally ascribe gender to them.

That makes sense if you do not respect that character identity, is Mae a man than?

To some, the thing about respect is that It requires people to actually show that respect. Of course anyone who didn't show thst respect to her would most likely be a dead and just unaware of it yet.

And romance it.

No it does not, it depends on what she feels and identifies with. And I like Jensaarai Bronitarian answer a lot more.

No, what I personally would say is not dependent on another person, what I do say however is.

An astro droid would be cool. Could make for a good spy, assassin, bodyguard, holo vid recorder & projector, audio journal, fridge and pack mule.

Having a personal opinion is not the criteria for being a bigot.

Yes, exactly (to the bold part). I'm not disagreeing with your post. I'm saying that portraying characters as gender-neutral requires awareness of the construct of gender from both characters in-game and the player.

As to Mae, of course not. 1) I don't really see how the snark is relevant to what I said and 2) Although society is getting much better at this today, there's certainly a sizable group of people that things exactly that.

In a sense, yeah. Doesn't mean they aren't allowed to create a similar type of character.

If you were to insist on referring to yourself as a particular gender, and I decide to come around and - despite knowing your preference - refer to you as different gender, we start to cross into a very uncomfortable and disrespectful arena.
