You got to admit, the veil and mages REALLY DO cause a lot of problems.

What purpose would they serve? They could teach about the historical Shartan, but why teach about the theological Shartan from the Chant?

Not just the Dissonent Verses themselves, but the history on when they were removed from the Chant of Light, as well as why they were removed.

The Canticle of Maferath was written, but was never included in the Chant by the modern chantry, and even then, a whole verse had been removed to begin with, and that's the verse we are looking up on the statues in the Wending Wood in Awakening (this is all on the quest description on the Merchant's Board.)

It also states that any study of the Dissonent Verses is frowned upon by the Chantry. They don't want anyone looking into those verses.

I don't think anyone doubts that Shartan ever existed (of those privy to historical knowledge anyway), so they can teach of the historical figure as much as tehy want. It is the Dissonant Verse which is difficult, since the Chantry considers it heresy.

For the verse on Shartan, I think it had more to do with the fact that they were given the Dales by Andraste and she was perfectly fine with them worshiping their gods and not the Maker, while they're trying to spread the worship of the Maker to all corners of the world. That and they wanted, like the dwarves of Orzammar who erase things from the memories when they become inconvenient, to remove any sign of hypocrisy on their own end.

It was them who gave the dales to the elves, and it was them who took it away and declared all elves had to worship the maker. It's kind of hard to justify the latter action when the former is in the Chant itself.

There is a large difference between the Dissonant Verses and historical records. No one doubts the existance of Shartan or Maferath, so if you want to study them and their actions, study the actual historical records of them. If you want to study the theological characters Shartan and Maferath, then you have to take it up with the Chantry.

And something tells me that many in the Chantry would not be willing to bend on the theological study of Maferath or Shartan.

Why would they? It is their faith, they are the ones who get to decide what goes and what stays.

They portray it as history. It wouldn't be a problem if they didn't try to stop this information from showing up at Universities.

This is why someone needs to cut their government  power and make them a passive.

The removal of the DIssonant Verses is not an attempt to purge Shartan or Maferath's actions from history. They are removed for political AND theological reasons. No one doubts the existance of either Shartan or Maferath.

It made it easy for them to take the Dales away from the Elves?

It probably didn't really change anything, other than the aftertaste of the conquest. The Orlesian people did not need any additional help in hating the Elves during that war, since the Elves had by then ravished much of Orlais, but the removal of those verses meant that afterwards no one could question the cause of action taken.

Don't take my word as gospel. It is merely how I see the events unfolding.

And it makes sense, and is more or less what I was also saying.

For example, Maferath is not regarded very well by believers in the Chantry because of his betrayal of Andraste, but the Canticle of Maferath says that he was forgiven. But the Chantry teaches that the Maker abandoned them a second time because Maferath's actions showed humanity wasn't ready to have the Maker's blessings back in their lives. If he was forgiven like his Canticle would believe, it would mean that somewhere in their theology, they are interpreting things completely wrong.

Hence, it was never included in the modern Chantry.

Nah, don't make them a passive, destroy them all together. I personally would love a genocide on every religious person in thedas.

Some of the Chantry's devout don't deserve it. Evangeline believes in the Maker, for one.

Wait, so you're against religion as a whole? There's few enough atheists in Thedas that the head writer managed to forget they exist. Seriously, I think you'll have to kill most if not all of your party, and just about everyone else besides.

Killing everyone could be fun. Companions and other people are overrated. It could be just like Skyrim!

Well we could start with reeducation, logic and give a choice of becoming an atheist or dying right? Come on, most peasants and commoners don't really believe, they don't even understand what religion is about most of the times, they'll just do what the authorities tell them, and behave accordingly.
