So Bioware has said that by and large LIs dont return because of the baggage. I've understood this to mean that people would be outraged at the LI falling for someone new. Is it such a bad thing in DA:I.

Take Leliana. It has been at least 9 years (probably more) since Leliana and the Warden were together. I wouldnt have thought myself in the minority when I say I would like whomever I loved to move on if I was no longer in the picture for that long. It doesn't mean she loved me any less, I would hope she recalled our years fondly but I would also hope she found love with others too

Thoughts?

EDIT: In the scenario above I am assuming the Warden is dead or otherwise out of the picture. My point is that you can still have a happily ever after (although the taint is a death sentence). Leliana had her happy life with the Warden but he is gone, can she never love again?

To me, it seems like they should either phase out the character or let them move on. What's the point of not letting them date again if you're going to put them in every game as single, anyway? It's not like they're any more with your old character, either way.

Given as far as we are aware Hawke/Warden are not confirmed to be dead, no i wouldn't want previous LI's to ignore the fact that they may very well be in a serious relationship with them and be seeking to re-unite with them rather than off romancing others.

Well, I don't think it's important in the DA series since the last two had totally different protagonists. Unlike the ME series where Sheperd carried over through the series, this isn't so. There would be little connection to your LIs from DA:O on. While I think fondly of how I engage my LI of choice in DA:O, it felt empty to me not having her carry over. The romance aspect in DA2 was empty for me since I was relating it to Origins in my first run through that game. The same thing goes for DA:I when it comes out since the character we play is yet again, a totally different character.

Having said that, Leliana does make an endearing mention of the "Hero Of Ferelden" in if you had The Exiled Prince DLC for DA2. it's possible that Leliana again makes a mention since we can carry over our save data from DA:O and Da2 into DA:I.

In the end, it is perspective.

Hoping they won't let the old companions be LI's again. They had their story. It will just become a big fandom mess. :)

I admit I am curious of the reason they aren't any longer by their lover (or ex). Are they dead, did they break up, or are they just temporarily parted? For me no biggie since I left my Hawke and Warden and they live on without me.

I can understand that some people get frustrated when their head canon of "happily ever after" isn't possible though. (Thinking of both Leliana and Morrigan)

Some people maintain long distance relationships.  I saw my Warden and Zevran being together even though their work often separated them.  Both the Warden and their LIs live interesting lives, they can't always be side by side in whatever they're doing.  Just because Leliana is often seen doing things without the Warden doesn't mean she never goes back to the Warden when she has the time.  We aren't given a window into her private life.

My warden did the ritual with Morrigan and went through the mirror with her so I think it would be weird if Morrigan acted like that didn't matter.

While I don't have an inherent problem with the LI's moving on, I wouldn't want to see them constantly popping up as LI's again. I would rather explore romances with new characters than tread familiar territory.

As long as Alistair never ever ever (ever ever ever) loves anyone ever again, I'm happy. The other characters can do what they want. :P

Lol.

No but in all seriousness, I'm not a huge fan of seeing old characters again in newer DA games, period. I don't think it'd make sense to include them as possible LIs either, mostly because we've already gotten to know these characters through someone else. Fresh material is better, imo, but re-imagining a whole new romance path with an old character can get stale.

Unless they've changed drastically in the past few years and are essentially like different people.

For me it's a little weird, like cheating on myself with myself. Though it's also tough because if you really liked that character in one of the previous games you're likely to stick with that character. Of course for people that hadn't romanced them in previous games or sacrificed their Warden and play DA:I its not really any different than any other character. So, I don't have a problem with it, but I'll probably avoid going down that road if it's an option.
