I am currently using this 2da that I got from the vault... I think it was included to Pain's Monster Compilation pack. I noticed that there are a lot of appearances in there that start with hid_ like Safiya, Dunkan and many many others. I tried to use some of them, but have problems. Safiya turned OK, but some have stretched fingers, or no head or no preview window, or cause other creatures of the area to stretch. Is it something else I have installed causing such a thing or in general some appearances are not meant to use?

How do you try to use them? Changing the appearance of an existing NPC? In that case, you may need to change the head number (not sure if that is the reason in your case, but I know for certain that trying to set a head reference to a body that doesn't have it in its list causes this kind of deformations).

For those who don't appear, are you sure you don't have another appearance.2da in your override?

Last time, I placed a commoner down and tried to change his appearance. Then I would create a blueprint from him. But his preview was not working. Even though I could see the appearance on the placed creature. Now, if I closed the area and reopen it, he would be invisible and one stag that was placed nearby was stretched to the edge of the screen until I deleted the problematic guy. And no, my override is empty of 2da files and such :).

I believe the "hid_" tags are used to indicate that the appearance is necessary for some game function but also not usable in the toolset. I never did figure out why they're there, but my guess is that they come with the OC and that rather than deleting them, content creators just put a little note saying they aren't the ones to use. If the hid_ version of something doesn't work there will be another version of the same appearance that does. The NPCs you mentioned are available under the NPC section in formats that work just fine.

Ah that's good to know. I thought that hid_ was just a way Pain chose to categorize the things that didn't "exist" but he found and released.

Some small update. One needs to set the head and hair to 0. I was placing down a commoner who has by default some other numbers. Once I made him into a hid_ garius he didn't appear on the preview. Once I made him NPC_ garius also not. Once I set these numbers to 0 he appeared just fine. Thanks for the information :).
