I would presume after the events of Asunder, but I'm a bit confused by the Timeline on the official site. It says what happened in Kirkwall was the start of the war... which makes no sense. One battle, which wasn't even a rebellion really, followed by three years of status quo before the actual fighting starts after the White Spire events isn't the start of the fighting, I would think.

Any chance a dev could clarify this?

I imagine Anders would say, "The war started the moment the Chantry misinterpreted Andraste... so like forever ago."

Kirkwall was the tipping point.  Everyone knew what was coming, some were hoping to stop it while others were actively working to make it happen.  And something this major takes time.  People of power have to try to maneuver their assets into the best position to take advantage of the situation.  The events of Asunder were the culmination of all this planning, as those parties involved were convinced that they were either prepared or were just tired of the status quo.  So ya, you could say Kirkwall was the start of the war, in the same way the shot in Lexington started the American Revolution, it was more a symbolic thing really (while yes, i do know the war started a few days later, not years, the similarities are there).  This was more in that the Templars clamped down on the Mages, and many of the Mages were not in favor of a war even as they were being persecuted.

Bottom line, it was a very confusing 3 years after Kirkwall that culminated in the Mage vs Templar war.  Hope that helps some.  :D

its not so much a war as a rebellion.

think of it like US revolution, the "power keg" moment was in the province of Massachusetts bay which occurred in 1770 with all the events that happened there. (see Chantry blown up)

the rebels actually didn't organise resistance movements until around 1774 when they put together that whole illegal provincial congress thing and attempted to usurp British rule and train militia men (see mages agreeing to break away)

in 1775 the fighting starts when the british are sent to disarm the militants and restore order to the province.

people dont just start slaughtering each other at the drop of a hat.

Yeah, but usually we don't call it a war until that part starts happening.

I get that Kirkwall's an important part of the buildup, but the start of the war?

...which doesn't make a lick of sense.

I don't think we have a specific starting date. More like a string of events that led to the rebellion, with the final part covered in Asunder.

Yeah but its thedas that have different ideas on what the beginning of a war is and besides outsiders looking in often look to flash points as the start of wars rather then when the fighting start's.

hence the assassination of the Austrian Arch Duke in June 1914 but the actual war wasn't declared until july 28 a month later, whilst granted the time frame is condensed the fact remains it is often the flashpoint which people refer to as the start of the war rather then commencement of fighting

Three years of debate is a long time between the flashpoint and the blaze.

If this war has to have a flashpoint, it would be the events that occurred in the White Spire, with the war being declared officially a month or two later when the mages voted on it at Andoral's Reach.

Well the site timeline says the Kirkwall Rebellion was the start. I'd file it under the string of event leading up to the war.

well im sure if the mages win they point to the events of the white spire as the start of the conflict

The Templars would too. It was only around the same time the mages were voting in Andoral's Reach that Lambert officially broke the Templars and Seekers from the chantry to go to war with the mages.
